Nintendo Downloads - August 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

My jaw actually dropped when I saw Super Star Wars. That is one of the rare games pre-N64 that has a nostalgia factor for me. Instant download - plus NyxQuest! This is a great day for the Wii. :)

The SNES Star Wars games are great, for whatever reason I thought we'd never see them on VC though. Whatever is going on at LucasArts lately, I like it :D

Looks like NOA dug up some more Western (and licensed!) stuff for us, kudos to LucasArts for the classy support. Color me mightily suprised. Good games, but I don't know that I'd buy given how brutally hard they were.

I also think this means good things for the StarWars N64 titles. And ZAMN has no more excuses.

I don`t know how many times I grindered power-ups and life ups in Supe Star Wars! Loved it besides the insane dificult... the spaceship boss still haunts me to this day.

Yup, sign me up for some Rogue Squadron and Battle for Naboo action.

Oooh, yes, I'd go for that. Rogue Squadron running in (what was then) hi-res with no slowdown? And Battle For Naboo was released late on in the N64's life that I managed to miss out on it.

How are the impressions on it? Any good?

Edit: Nintendo Life gave it 9/10. Guess that answers my question.
Me and a couple other Europeans gave impressions in the official thread. It came here a few weeks back.

Super Star Wars and NyxQuest? Now this is an awesome week.

This. I rented one of the Star Wars trilogy back on the SNES (I think it was Super Star Wars), but I never owned the games. I think I'll be buying them on VC, though. :)

Lucas Arts awakening from a 10 years coma?

Can't wait for shadows of the empire. My first starwars experience ever! Funny but I played and got interested in seeing the movies afterwards to become on of the biggest starwars fans ever. This is historic guys!

Nintendo, please sign also a contract with those guys who have the Jurassic Park rights!! I want to play the SNES-Games, I am starving for them on VC...

Super Star Wars is nice, but I'm still not buying anything.

Waiting to spend my free DSi Points too. Might pick up Mario vs Donkey Kong. Might..

Wait, if Nintendo has some sort of good relationship with LucasArts regarding the Virtual console, does that mean there is hope for Zombies Ate My Neihbors?

Updated the OP.

What amuses me about this release and announcement is that it follows hot on the heels of the wringing of hands about the possible end of the VC service just the other week...
Oh man this is so true. The meltdowns were hilarious. Here's my favorite rant from last month:

Licenses and publisher support. Nintendo can't completely deal with either, they work with what they have and this is apparently its limit. Only stupid people think that Nintendo has a magic bag full of games they won't release. But definately the output is going to be slower as I'm sure most the VC programmers and QA have moved on to Wiiware for both Nintendo and third party supporters.
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

*cough* boxlife *cough*

(M vs DK is pretty darned good too, though. Fantastic value for money.)

But I wasn't wrong. LucasArts is new western publisher support which is what I had been saiding for a long time they needed to keep going. Nobody though it was ending forever but that Nintendo is no longer on a schedual where they feel that they can or need to release a VC game per week and that's because Japan's support greatly outweighs western support and the overseas conversion rate of those titles is low.

Hey, I just happen to write for that site. :P

Anyway, first impressions are good on my end. The music is fantastic.

I don't understand what's so special about Boxlife compared to Pictobits. Boxlife, while an okay game to me, is nowhere near as energetic or fun as Pictobits, which is my most played DSiWare game. Maybe I'm missing something in the game...?

Also, how many N64 Star Wars games were there? I can only think of Shadows of the Empire, Episode 1 Racer, Rouge Squadron, and Battle for Naboo, and I've played the first two and loved them. I hope for at least one to arrive on the service!

(Also, weird that I love Star Wars games, but not really the movies. Someone said something about something Ewok, and I was like "what's an ewok?" to myself until I Googled it.)

My gods. If slaughtering some sand people was a sign of Anakin's darkness, what the hell does blasting away a hundred Jawas on the word of one prissy droid say about Luke and I.

I played Icarian Nyx Quest through the first boss, so far it's outstandiing! Great atmosphere and some pretty unique platforming/puzzle solving.

Those are the only four. Lucasarts also published Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine for it as well.

I just recently upgraded to an HDTV, and I noticed how crisp and nice Mario Kart 64 looks. I understand VC games run at 480p when the Wii is set to do so, but do N64 VC games actually run at a higher resolution than on N64? I was under the impression that non-Expansion Pak games ran at 256x224 and "high res" games ran at 640x480.

The NES and SNES run ar 256x240. The way a screen stretches horizontally on a CRT with scanlines allowed these systems to render at 256 pixels horizontally without really makinng the quality look bad at all.
The other systems, the Genesis and PC Engine, ran at 320x240.
From what I understand, the N64 runs at 320x240. Whenever you do a high resolution mode on the N64, it is really just high resolution textures, not a high resolution screen.
The other systems, the Playstation and Saturn, also run at 320x240.

Also, yes, the N64 emulator renders all the polygons and stuff in 640x480, and with a smooth frame rate.

Also, thanks to the poster above.

I'm curious about Rock & Roll Climber -- not enough to purchase it, mind you, but curious... this was the mystery Nintendo title from a year ago, right?

Additional titles for the VC, eh?

Come on, Maniac Mansion....

Yes, that would be good...they could even use the Commodore 64 version now. :D

That's good to hear. I was just checking out the trailer and some reviews, and it looks very interesting.

I've seen some comparisons between NyxQuest and LostWinds. I really enjoyed LostWinds when it came out last year, and unfortunately haven't heard anything lately about the planned sequel. If you've played LostWinds, then how would you say NyxQuest compares to it?

It was from GDC earlier this year.

Personally I'm not interested at all. But if you own a balance board it may be worth checking out.

I loved LostWinds, but so far I feel NyxQuest is a bit better. It's a bit challenging, which is good, but it doesn't have that soothing feel that LostWinds does. It's give and take, but I think overall NyxQuest will be the better choice for most.

This is one of the reasons the VC exists. The rare video game based on a movie/license that are good. Hopefully we get the Batman and the Disney/Capcom/Sega games (DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Chip N Dale, Aladdin) soon. If not, then a LucasArts Star Wars Wii Motion Plus game will do.

Wow, Super Star Wars. Very good value for $8, one of the best licensed games ever not to mention one of the most relentless arcade gunners ever. Will have to get this soon. Very nice surprise and hopefully means more Lucas Arts classics and apparently confirms better relations between them and Nintendo.

Why would you do that? said:

Not only that but the games also run in 24bits color instead of 16bits colors wich removes ALOT of dithering.

Virtual Console
Super Star Wars (SNES)

WiiWare
NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
Rock N' Roll Climber

DSiWare
Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters

First week I've wanted four downloads. My only complaint is that none of them are Duck Tales. Also, what's with all the Star Wars love all of the sudden. Is there some release I'm unaware of? A new movie? Blu-Ray? Game?

Oh WOW. NyxQuest is absolutely excellent!

Nice ambiance, very cool gameplay. It's also totally beautiful.

Agreed. But I did find a glitch in it - character got stuck in a block and couldn't move/die. So I had to quit the level.
