Nintendo Downloads - August 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

upandaway said:
-Not only Cave Story, but all those Nicalis WiiWare games. There are like 4 now. And they sure are taking their time.
-There's also the Bit.Trip series with 4 more episodes to go.
-All 4 Japan-only Pokemon WiiWare games, I'm still fucking waiting.

..And that's it. Between Icarian and Swords & Soldiers, it seems all of the hyped WiiWare games have been released, and no one bothered to announce some more, unless we call the 2D Boy collaboration thing as an announcement.

Well, there's also that ball rolling game, same game designer as Knytt right?

Speaking of which, Knytt would be effing perfect for WiiWare with a dumbed down level editor it would be epic.

EDIT: nevermind, you kinda mentioned it, it's one of the Nicalis games, Night Game or w/e. But the Knytt person is involved right?

Question about that though.
It says that I have like 5MB free on my SD card, but that's obviously not true, is there a limit?

Also you can choose a folder, but can't create a folder (unless I do it on my computer), would that give me "more space"?

Put the SD card in your computer and make sure you don't have random computer files on it. Happened to me the other day, I forgot I used it to hold a few documents. They don't show up in the Wii storage menu.

What's left on the GAF super hype list besides Cave Story?

Quite a few interesting games coming up. Cave Story, Night Game, La Mulana, And Yet It Moves, Max & the Magic Marker, Mr Driller World, and Military Madness are all day one downloads for me. I'll also be keeping an eye on Carnival King, Chronos Twin DX (how was the DS version, BTW? Never came out in the US), Contra Rebirth, Cube, Let's Hitchhike!!!!!!!!!, Meat Boy, Mecho Wars, Rage of the Gladiators, Shootanto, Toribash and Zombie Panic. Grotesque Tactics also sounds interesting but the screenshots they released obviously came from the PC version so I'll have to see how the Wii version holds up.

What makes you say that?

:lol
I don't know if I can spare the money and/or time right now, but that sentence above just sold me the game. Will buy ASAP.

Well I liked Military Madness back in the day, but a) the media for this one looks terrible both as a fan and even detaching myself and just as a neutral onlooker, b) every preview has been skeptical... and previews generally make things look better, c) it's going to get drowned out on all three platforms by better, higher profile releases.

I just don't think it's going to come together.

I don't know. I don't think so... I think Night Game is from a different director.
Project Q is definitely from the Knytt guy though. And then there's Cave Story and La Mulana, which all together form the super ultra 4-Nicalis-games robot.

Well it's basically just a remake of the original Military Madness with improved A.I. and online multiplayer, so I don't see how they could mess that up too badly.

Night Game is from Nifflas, the Knytt creator.
It even bears a striking resemblance to one of his older games, Within a Deep Forest: http://nifflas.ni2.se/index.php?main=04Within_a_Deep_Forest

That's the "But hey, what's the worst that could happen?" of videogaming. There are always ways to fuck up a game, it doesn't matter whether it's a port or not. And you just doomed us all. Thank you very much. :(

There didn't seem to be a big thread about this but eitherway I'll just post it here since it's fairly relevant:

Nintendo is officially allowing SD card streaming for DLC. This means that you don't have to have a buffer space in NAND Flash to use your DLC. Guitar Hero 5 will be the first to implement this.

Obviously this is directly usable to Wiiware games, but also if Nintendo updates the System Menu then presumably VC games could make use of it too. Not only would it mean faster boot times, but also the ability to play larger games that may not fit in the NAND Flash. Hopefully this ability expands a little more.

See Monopoly, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! and/or Minesweeper on other downloadable platforms.

Ooh, now that is interesting. I wonder if an SD Menu v.2 could be on the cards - unless Nintendo really have an issue allowing software to boot from external storage?

Thread update coming soon, anyway...

Just pointing out that Flipnote is up on the EU servers.
Seems like one can only view European animations through the software.

Master System games in PAL-land are the retarded edition? Or are they optimized?

Retarded. Borders and slowed down gameplay/music.
Stay away from them, I've learned that the hard way (Wonderboy 1). :-/

Never mind, I see my problem, I was reading it incorrectly.

Hey guys and gals! Not sure this belongs in the Aug. thread but my wife wrote up a brief rundown of a few of the Art Style games. (LINK)

...

I want DOTSTREAM re-released. DSi, Wii, dungivafudge. Just make sure the music and graphics are intact. Straight-up GBA port, no fuckery like "Orbital".

Do you have an Xbox 360? In an place where you can get Xbox Live Indie Games? Well than this is for you:

Who knows when Nintendo will do it. This is 400MSP ($5) and supports 8 players.

When will Nintendo actually be doing this themselves? There is no reason why WiiWare/VC on an SD card should wear down our NANDS by copying it there first.

ESRB update:

Ninja Gaiden (Arcade) Tecmo, Ltd. Everyone 10+ Alcohol Reference, Suggestive Themes, Violence Wii

Rygar (Arcade) Tecmo, Ltd. Everyone 10+ Mild Fantasy Violence Wii

EFF YEAH! :D

Came out about 4 days ago. Just because something is a ripoff doesn't infringe copyright - otherwise we'd not see StoneLoops ;)

This ones a little more music based too, with a music mode.

Wiiware has a number of problems. For one the load speed is different from the SD card and this may introduce stuttering or other sorts of errors if data cannot be loaded as fast as intended. Also for ones that use or would use the SD card you can't read from and write to the SD card at the same time. Older games self implement all the SD card access, and so trying to load them from the SD card can be an issue.

What a lot of this seems like is that it's an official SD card gateway that standardizes the way games access it. Nintendo might be wrapping some of it up in a newer IOS verison. But only newer games and maybe VC games can fully make use of it.

That's what I was afraid of. Sad that it can't be helped though.

Impossible Mission and Last Ninja 2 are ESRB rated, so the US should still see at least a few more C64 games.

Cool. I wanted to try the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden, but I can't play it in Ninja Gaiden Black because the X360's emulation of the game doesn't emulate the arcade game, either.

No, this game is the first time I had to quit a Wii game due to graphical limitations like stuttering and framerate worse than a bad N64 game. It's that bad.
Well, to be fair, most modern console games have frame rates worse than F-Zero X.

-Sujin Taisen: Number Battles (Nintendo, 500 points)

Anyone completely new to this game/genre played this and have impressions? I love number games and strategy so may buy it tonight anyway but I'm just curious as to what people think. Seems that the JP version & DS original were raved about so they translated it.

Not spotted any English version reviews.

It's a great game, definitely worth the 500.

So, does anyone think Cave Story has any chance of releasing this month!? I guess they have til Sep 21st, but...

Why Sept. 21st? Did they say summer '09?
Last time they said something about a release date they said May, a bit after Pixel's birthday.

They promised again and again taunting how close they are to finishing and it's just not there yet. I've stopped waiting. When it comes out it comes out, but it's useless trying to get excited for a release date if they can't deliver.

Let's Hitchhike is um.

Hm.

Speaking of DSiWare to look forward to... does anyone know if the Mr. Driller DSiWare game is Drill Spirits "Express" or if it's a new product? And in either case, does it have the easymode power-ups like Drill Spirits?

I decided to get it last night anyway (bed time DSi is where it's at) and it's a great game. It's more similar to 'pipemania' style games than I expected, and is nicely strategical. Only done 3 levels so far, but there looks to be enough in there.

I think I've FINALLY found my 10 min play time DSi download game.

On a side note - a REALLY simplified DSi version of Advance Wars DS (first version) as a download game would be great. I have and love both DS games, but it'd be nice to have a basic one to suck new players in and to flip open in spare time.

Very small PEGI update:

-Spindizzy (Commodore Gaming, C64)

Very small OFLC update:

-Shootanto: Evolutionary Mayhem (Hudson Soft, WiiWare)

What are the must have DSi Ware games? I haven't kept up since I got the system at launch. I got aquia already, anything else standout awesome?

On the wii side how is swords and soldiers? I can't tell what is going on in the trailers. Thinking of getting that and that nyxquest game.

For DSiWare, the Art Style series, Mighty Flip Champs, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Flipnote are considered the best.

Swords and Soldiers is a really cool side-scrolling RTS. It's actually pretty simple, you should be able to have a complete grasp of the gameplay after just a few minutes of play. It's very fun. Nyxquest is very good as well, a unique platform/puzzle/action game with good use of the Wii remote and nice graphics. I recommend both.

Thanks! I'll get both the wiiware games tonight then. maybe snag lost winds as well, never got around to that before.

I'm youtubing the dsi art style games and they all look great. I don't want to go broke :( haha. I'm glad I picked my DS up again.
