Nintendo Downloads - July 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

Good gravy, I wonder how many games are in the queue. It seems like all the developers who started making WiiWare games are all finishing stuff at the same time.

There's still a wealth of retro tiles to be mined for the VC. Sic the lawyers on it already and get it done. We understand the deal about IP licensing fees.

Good week!

Is this Bust-a-Move better than the early Bust-a-Move Bash! retail title?

HA! I just came in here to post about that! :lol

I've been interested in Bash, and personally, I really like the character designs and overall style of Bash more than the "regular" design of Bub and Bob.

Anyway, it's got Wiimote, Nunchuck, and Classic controls, so I really don't get why the fuck IGN was so hard on the game almost mainly for the poor Wiimote controls, in fact I didn't notice A MENTION of the other two controller methods. :/

It supports 480p by the way! :D

Wonder if I can find it still and hopefully around $20.

But is Plus so much better? Especially due to it being only $6? Unfortunitly, I'm still not connected online, so that's not really a choice now is it? :lol

I'm really interested in Bust-a-Move, will be waiting for some impressions on that.

It seems it would cater well to the clickandplay nature of channels. If it boots up fast I could see myself playing it a lot it quick "only a few rounds" sessions.

I wrote a review for Bust-a-Move Plus! (here) when it hit the PAL service the other week. It's okaaay, but Bash! is a lot better in every way (especially multiplayer).

Looking forward to BIT.TRIP CORE impressions! Hopefully that doesn't take as long as BEAT did to hit PAL regions.

Bash isn't even that great (but all Wii's got), so Plus being that much worse means I'll pass. :)

Thanks.

Art Style (base10 lulz) and bit.trip.core here I come!

I still haven't spent my free 1000 points that came with my DSi. There's definitely been games that I would buy, but at this point it's become almost a challenge to see how long I can last without spending them.

How does Plus control? At least compared to the Wiimote controls in Bash?

And is Bash the only BAM (heh) game this gen that's at least retail?

Plus doesn't make use of any of the Wii Remote aiming/motion controls found in Bash. You either hold the Wii Remote on its side and use the Dpad or plug in a Classic Controller.

And yeah, Bash is the only retail version this gen, aside from what's on DS and PSP. =)

Ah, neat! :)

Bash and the NA BAM DS were developed by HappyHappening, but I've never seen their website, hell those two, and The Wild West for DS are the only know titles from them, odd.

Who developed BAM Plus? Dreams did Bubble Bobble Plus.

I actually still play my ancient PS2 Bust-a-Move game for 2 player action.
I can't believe there isn't one for PS3 or 360.

Hell, Bust-A-Move 2 Arcade Edition for PS1/PSN would be a godsend (still my favorite version).

I would not doubt Bust-A-Move ending up on XBLA, I mean Bubble Bobble Neo is basically a port of Bubble Bobble Plus isn't it? Dreams isn't doing the port I believe.

Wasn't there a Bubble Bobble announced for PSN too? I forget.

It's already been announced for XBLA I believe.

All of Taitos DD games are on both platforms except for Space Invaders Extreme (only on XBLA) Space Invaders Get Even (Only on Wii Ware) and seemingly Qix (XBLA exclusive at the moment)

Have they released Yoshi's Island yet on the VC? If not, then what the hell is taking them so long to release it.

It used the SuperFX chip, which - given the similar lack of appearance of Star Fox and Stunt Race FX - appears to not yet be handled in their emulator.

For me, the best version of Puzzle Bobble (BAM) is still the SNES version. That was the last time that the series (a) had an endless mode, and (b) had an endless mode that was any good.

So yet another time that a Taito game costs 200 points more for PAL?
Fuck that.

Konami's way it's how you do it, stupid SE-Taito.
600 points for Gradius Rebirth is a godsend, that game is actually worth it now.

I remember really enjoying the genesis version of California Games, but I'm not really that sure if I'd still enjoy playing virtual hacky-sack.

My favorite events were the surfing and BMX. I really spent a lot of hours on the BMX event.

Comeback in 100 years. They update one game a week.

.

My thoughts exactly, I wouldn't be angry if they would just release at least two games every week. At least then it wouldn't feel like such a pathetic trickle of releases.

There are a lot of crappy Wii Ware games being released but that doesn't bug me since we at least get a choice (and a good choice recently with 3 games per week) every week!

A good week. The DSi is seeing TONS of Art Style games. Hell, I'm pretty sure the awesomeness of BoxLife still hasn't even sunk in.

It's nice to see Bit.Trip Core up there as well, though I may skip it unless impressions are off the charts. Bit.Trip Beat is a fun game by it's general design, but at the same time, I'm not a fan of the ridiculous difficulty and overlong stages, which I've heard make a return in Core.
Eh. I'm not seeing the greatness in Boxlife. It's okay, but really nothing to go on about (like sprks's's post).

Bust-A-Move is coming to the XBLA....in the form of Bust-A-Move Plus/LIVE!

Yeah someone mentioned it earlier.
Glad to hear that.

I'm assuming that means I can play online with friends!
Is there a date or time expected? I can't follow the links posted before.

The Wii Ware and XBLA versions are identical AFAIK, so I don't think that you'll be getting online play.

Boxlife has addicted me like few games have. I'm getting a bit tired of it, but it's the kind of game that sinks into your consciousness. I see little unfolded box patterns everywhere...

Anybody have impressions of Base 10? I've loved every Art Style game so far.

Wow, that'd really be a blow.
That's all I'm hoping for in a next gen version.

There still just isn't enough on DSiWare to make me give up my Lite. The free 1,000 points aren't tempting at all. Some here will chide and say that folks like me are "too hard to please and are putting too much emphasis on quantity.

But if DSiWare is supposed to be the trade off for the GBA slot (not just for GBA games, but other major bullet points like the Taito arcade paddle, GH compatibility, Metroid Pinball, cross game unlockables, ect), we have every right to be disappointed with the output. Calculators, watches, stripped down Brain Age packs, give me a break. Dr. Mario Express is an insult for anyone with the fantastic Dr. Mario/Puzzle League GBA cart or Online RX.

Except for the Art Style series, Nintendo isn't stepping up to the plate with DSi Ware and as good as Wii Ware is, it's all carried by 3rd parties now. Speaking of Dr. Mario RX, a year later and that is still the highest profile Nintendo property on Wii Ware! MM9 wants to know when we'll see a new 8 bit Mario, Metroid or Zelda? Or just any kind of good first party download that isn't a puzzler.

If Box Life (yes I want it) and the convenience of redownloading Elektroplankton in chunks are good enough, then more power to you. Me? I'm still not ready to pay 169.99 for slightly bigger screens and the privilege of waiting every week for DSi Ware to make some real noise.

Boxlife, PiCTOBiTS, Minis March Again, Aquia, and Mighty Flip Champs. And I don't think I really want to buy Electroplankton again; I imported it for $50 in my crazier days :D

But that's just me; I love these games, and I love the screen size and improved color for my existing games. I can certainly understand how it's not working out for others.

Dammit Skip, why do you wish to take all my monies? :lol :lol

All we need now is the bit Generation series for dsiware, and my dsi would be happy.

Just a side note, three new Tales were released today for Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. (Yang, Palom & Edge)

They are available through the in-game DLC menu.

ok, i just beat level 6 of base 10. holy munchkins, batman!

Question about Bubble Bobble Plus---

Maybe I did something wrong, but after beating Stage A and going out to the menu the game didn't save my progress. When I went back to it, I had to complete Stage A again. Am I missing something? Or does this retain the game's arcade-ish appeal? Just wondering.

So I'm wanting to play Ys Book 1 and 2.

Which is better, the VC or DS release?

VC release by a landslide. The DS port, while a nice effort by Atlus to polish it up, is a mess or a game I have heard. Stick with the original and better TG-16 CD-ROM version. I DL'ed it last summer when it hit and literally could not stop playing the first game. It's simple yet very addictive. The music holds up very well too.

I recommend it absolutely. One of the finest examples of the VC's best games.

Book 1 took me around 5 hours, Book 2 I don't remember exactly but it was quite a bit longer, the dungeons/areas in Book 2 are very mazelike and it's easy to get lost in them.

Also some advice: make sure to keep a separate save file for whenever you enter a dungeon, because it's possible to save on top of an enemy at which point you get killed immediately whenever you load your game.

Well, I beat the first Ys game in a day or so. it's very fast paced compared to games now. I've... err... not played the 2nd game much since Ive been sidetracked by other stuff, so I can't say on that aspect, but it's longer and has some newer gameplay elements like MP added over the 1st game.

They are totally worth the... 8 bucks is it? I forget. Regardless, well worth the price. Just know they are 15+ year old games, but at the time, they were pretty mindblowing in terms of scope and especially the music and (!!!!) Voice acting.

Ys I took me about six hours, but wouldn't have if I'd thought to use a FAQ sooner. You will need it for the final dungeon. It's pretty enormous anyway, but it contains a certain "puzzle" which I might never have figured out on my own. Also, watch out for an early boss that seemed nearly impossible to me--you may need to level up when you get there, but you may not; just remember there's a very limited window to attack when its cloak is open. Hopefully you'll know what boss I'm talking about when you see it.

I seem to remember Ys II being about twice as long, which is cool since there's nothing remotely obtuse about it. Even though I still like the first game a lot, I like the second much better and would say that even by itself it would have been one of VC's best releases.

stage 9 cleared, i'm calling it a day.

ed: game has VS download play that works even with non-dsi peers! O_o

Thanks, you did bring up a few goodies I forgot about. I still want them to put something more meaty on the service though like a Metroid Dread type title.

edit: Watched some vids for Aquia. A game of that caliber would only sell for about a buck on the App store. Same for Box Life.
