34 million.. You know many games would love to sell 34 million bundled or not. Cod and halo are like bundled every year. Sony has some ps3 bundles themselves and those games will never get up there.

Uh...you realize I wasn't knocking it for being bundled right? Their was that Mario Kart bundle that was one of the primary SKUs of the system for a little bit. Even without bunding the game sold over 26 million copies which in incredible.

As a Metroid fan and an action game fan I found the gameplay to be mind numbingly dull and simple.
The gameplay style just isn't good.

The overall progression of the game to test your skills (through environment hazards and enemies) needed some work. But the base movement, attacking, and jumping, I much prefer over the Prime games.

I probably should ask it here...

I never ever played Startropics. Therefore I don´t know jackshit about it. So why has it that cult following?

I might watch the stream over my Wii U just because I can. Can anyone confirm if that's possible?

Everyone says yes^^. Just give it a try I would say.

Peer Schneider, I wasn't too convinced by his first mention of retro new game as he threw it next to a mario kart x sonic racing prediction but he seems more sure in that last podcast.
Feels good, it's what I want and what I'm predicting for months.

Lot of material for dkcr2 with everything from the serie that didn't make it and even if level design was better, they can add more vertical levels and maze like dkc2.

I firmly believe trying to rework Metroid into a more accessible mass market title is the worst thing they can do with the series. Other M was this, to an extent, trying to incorporate concepts that are common in typical blockbusters.

I don't think Metroid is ever going to have the sway that other franchises do, because of the kind of game it is. You'd end up having to make too many changes to the core ideology, which itself risks not being appealing to anybody at all, while in turn upsetting a disinterested core fanbase.

I think Nintendo would do best to accept Metroid is at its best as a Metroid game. Not niche, but not a gigantic blockbuster either. I think it sells well enough to the kind of people who like Metroid and these kinds of games to warrant investment, and they should be happy with that.

It'd be fairly possible to have a dislocated single-player and multi-player, though. I mean, the whole concept of "Metroidvania" doesn't translate into multi-player full stop. I think the best you could do would be some kind of co-op, maybe. However, it'd be perfectly possible to maintain a Metroid Prime title with the same single-player campaign we saw in Prime and Prime 2, but for it to have some sort of competitive multi-player which uses the same controls, but goes for a different vibe.

Cod and halo get a 360 bundle when ever they come out what are you talking about?

anyway,
Mario Kart U with great online, and stealing stuff from things like cod like exp and rank will make it very interesting to people. Especially now that its trend in the industry.
They do limited time bundles with Halo and occasionally with CoD, they are never multi-year things that half of the consoles come with like Mario Kart Wii was.
The Halo and CoD bundles are also premium bundles, so they cost more.

Wow, 3D Land is doing very well for only 1 1/2 years. If any game were to dethrone Mario 64, IMO it should be that. :)

Also, I'm almost positive Mario Kart Wii is the best selling game of all time (not including pack-in games. I think it surpassed the previous best selling game, Wii Play, before Mario Kart Wii itself became a pack-in).

wouldn't it be better to make a different game at that point, with a MP focus? think Turok Rage Wars..

I wouldn't mind that either, to be honest. I just know that Nintendo is quite conservative with IPs and prefers to adapt older IPs for new genres than create new IPs for new genres, and Metroid Prime is the closest thing in Nintendo's portfolio. I'd probably actually be even more pleased if Retro was working on an FPS game that was an entirely new IP.

Well they should of made them multi year. But they cant afford to cause they release a new game every year. Because regardless if they do a bundle or not those games usually stop selling really quick because there will be another one next year, which is another point but I think we all understand that one pretty well.

They are more expensive than the regular consoles and are billed more as limited edition collector's items. They only make a set amount and then they are done. That is why they don't keep them around.

What is this latest podcast that people are mentioning in which he confidently reiterates the "new IP" prediction/inside info? Another IGN one? Anyone got a link and a timestamp?

And that's why they should use the tech demo/Twilight Princess art style for Zelda Wii U.

I really like the TP style, but I wish they do something different. Realistic, but different. That would be very interesting IMO.

Also, they have to make sure the game looks "lived in".

From Tom (Miiverse - E3 Backstage Community)

Happy Friday!

It's the last workday before E3 and I'm trying to get everything ready to go before I'm off to LA tomorrow for the big week ahead.

Housekeeping notes: While we read every one of your comments here and the posts in the main E3 Community, I won't be able to reply to you directly. (if I reply to one person it won't be fair to everybody else)

I can attach pics to my posts so I'll try to take pics from our booth when I can.

Here's a pic of our E3 site on the GamePad. A little under 3 days 15 hours until E3.

Nothing new, but I like the fact that their hyping up the E3 over Miiverse, so everyone can see it (casual & hardcore).

It's also a benefit that they can easily provide a link to the E3-Direct in Miiverse or in the eShop.

News, directly to the consumer.

Press gets their own events, etc.

I think their new E3-system could work out better than everything before (if the content is good ;)).

Everyone says yes^^. Just give it a try I would say.

I'll see if it works then. Mind you, there will probably be a murder to clean up if it turns out that it doesn't work and I miss something.

...Perhaps I'll keep a window with the twitch link open just in case.

So Peer is basically claiming, not predicting, that whatever Retro's title is it is a new IP?

I would have been extremely excited by another Metroid game by them but this is much welcomed news! Lets hope this title is also going to be released sooner than later. Retro can do what Nintendo can't do. As much as I love Nintendo's titles and don't care that they are sequels, another new big IP is just what they need.

After this release I would want them to make DKRC2 and have it ready by next fall which I think is reasonable if this title to be revealed is to be released this fall.

BTW I don't think expecting Retro's title to be released relatively soon (within next 6-8 months) is reasonable. The title has to have been in development for at least 2 years and with such shitty 3rd party support, the landscape is going to be pretty barren unless Nintendo has a continuous release schedule themselves.

After Pikmin, I think they should release the next Mario game in September, Mario Kart in October, WWHD in November, and Retro either in November with Zelda or in December by itself.

Though I wonder what that leaves for Spring 2014. Smash being released in Spring 2014 would be amazing.

So not counting the OOT remake, Twilight Princess is the best selling Zelda game of all time.
Not so surprising they went for the TP look with the tech demo then.

If we're counting ports and rereleases (which we have to be for TP to be > OoT original), then OoT surely sold more when you throw in Virtual Console sales. Possibly LttP as well when you consider the GBA port + VC rerelease.

I do think either Retro's game or X will be out this holiday. Not both, but one of them.

I was gone all day yesterday, and.....dat ship.

Nibel, whenever you wake up from beautiful monkey slumber, please add me!
I'll try harder to keep up with this thread from here on, promise. SO HYPE!

I doubt Nintendo is ever able to generate the amount of hype with a Zelda that they did with Twilight Princess.

holy shit. i had no idea twilight princess surpassed ocarina of time. well-deserved. i guess the gamecube version is good for something.

Yeah, Twilight Princess was ridiculously hyped. I couldn't sleep waiting for that game. I really need to go back and play it - again hehe. I really liked Skyward Sword(thought it improved in some areas that were lacking in TP) but I think Twilight Princess will hold up better in 10 years. With that said, let's not close the door on hype for Zelda U. It will have plenty in 2014 or 2015 when it releases lol

We can only hope that Nintendo takes the best from Twilight Princess, the best from Skyward Sword, along with these new ideas they want to incorporate and come up with another great Zelda game.

And just for fun:

Code:
N64 Super Mario 64 11.910.000
GCN Super Mario Sunshine 5.810.000
WII	Super Mario Galaxy 11.720.000
WII	Super Mario Galaxy 2 7.220.000

NDS	Super Mario 64 DS 10.830.000
3DS	Super Mario 3D Land 8.290.000

And THAT is exactly why 3D Mario U is so important. If Nintendo can only manage 7 million copies of the series sold for the U, it will have already jump started the console

Nicely said, and I agree wholeheartily. I mean multiplayer wasnt bad in prime 2 but nothing special either, and I do believe if they are going the multiplayer/online fps route, they should start a new ip instead of using metroid, as I think it would detract from the main single player experience as they have relatively less recources and time for the single player experience. Also, what would be the target audience, as there are certain expectations tied to a metroid title from fans, and other gamers know( i think) it isnt a standard fps series at all.

However, if retro decides ta make a new fps i.p. I personaly would be dissapointed, its metroid prime 4 I want from them, damn it! ;)

Cod doesn't get bundled often and what makes it such a monster is that it does 20million + every year. MK (I can't think of any game) which can pull that off.

A bit late to the discussion, but I personally loved MP2's multiplayer. It was much different than most multiplayer games.

I agree to a degree

I think they had a chance with the Prime series to spin-off one of the other hunters into a more action focused title.

And they don't seem to mind mixing with the formula a ton with spin-offs.

Who knows could still happen
And could be named something like "Prime Whatever" to kind of give the sense tied into the Metroid verse.

Other M had some glaring problems but overall the mechanics were pretty solid. I do hope for Wiimote + nun chuck or gamepad this time around though. holding Wiimote sideways really limited things.

Other M's only problems were narrative and its byproduct of extreme linearity. These are problems that are easy to fix and I'd gladly take another Team Ninja-developed Metroid title in the same vein if those two things were addressed. Now with the Wii U GamePad we'd even avoid the silly "wtfwhynonunchuk"-controversy from people who didn't realize that the game played perfectly fine without an analog stick. Other M 2 could be just as fantastic as a Prime 4.

I'd rather Metroid stay dead forever than get another Other M...

nonsense hyberbole.

MKWii sold like a beast. What exactly did Nintendo do so right with promoting that game?

I still can't believe how well Link's Crossbow Training sold. Over five million!

MKWii was the perfect companion game for the Wii Sports audience. Mario Kart is the ultimate bridge title. NSMBWii also fit that bill. Easy to pick up, tough to master, innocent appearance, big brand, instant fun, open to all ages.

I might watch the stream over my Wii U just because I can. Can anyone confirm if that's possible?

Nintendo streams via ustream. Ustream is supported on Wii U since it appears to be using HTML5 or at least not Flash like twitch.

What is this latest podcast that people are mentioning in which he confidently reiterates the "new IP" prediction/inside info? Another IGN one? Anyone got a link and a timestamp?

Latest Gamescoop.

No, it's actually the latest NVC Episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3KN0QqNVYA

Like I said its still a bundled game. I mean I shouldnt count it for "reasons"? I guess. And good they sale 20+ m units. Not surprised over a popular game that spans 4 or more platforms. (Im not sure if declassified counts)

I completely missed getting on the ship too, must have happened on the other side of the world.

If Nintendo wants a popular multiplayer shooter, they only have 1 IP they could really make that happen with. StarFox made by the same team that did Vanquish, a Third Person Shooter for ground missions combined with the best space and air combat in the series thanks to Platinum's insane action-y designs. Seriously Vanquish fits really well with that series from it's gameplay, the dashing around and fast action of the character is perfect, not to mention that Starfox is squad based, so moving it into multiplayer in this way would allow them to take some of the best practices from FPS/TPS and give you a great 4 man squad mechanic. Sadly I don't work for Nintendo or Platinum, but hopefully they see this too.

I thought Ages/Seasons sold more than that, guess most people bought either one or the other.

Minish Cap number is depressing, I don't understand why that game bombed, it was a great Zelda and it features one of the best sidekick in the series. Major backlash against Wind Waker art style at the time?

Also holy shit at Galaxy, I always thought it barely broke 10 mil, that budget re-release really helped. It's also nice to see Galaxy 2 has kept selling.
