Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom: a visual compendium (Kickstarter)

We're past £45,000, we're getting bookmark ribbons. Would be cool if they were colored after the systems.

It'll surely pass the 50k, which was a stretch goal I really wanted (metallic letters). Next one i care about is 75k (the gatefold pages)

I just want this:

Not sure when it reached it, but I just woke up & it's almost at £52,000, meaning we're getting the metallic silver & gold inks.

Really great to see how fast it's hitting stretch goals in barely over a day of being up. I imagine after tomorrow or so, it might get a bit more activity due to payday.

Is it just me or does this book look to be filled with fluff?

I love the idea but getting 2 pages dedicated to 1 huge screenshot (eerily similar to the Art of Videogames) and a tiny blurb about the game does not make me jump at the offer. And pages dedicated to fan art. Come on.

Anyone else feel this way?

£55k reached, 16 more pages. That's a total of 64 additional pages at the moment.

I wonder if they already have plans on what they want to add or if they'll have backers vote on what they want the extra pages to contain.

Not what the book aims to do. It's all about the visual art. So might not be the one for you.

From previous kickstarters, the content was already planned. Sometimes the writer does manage to get extra stuff done or a new interview as someone comes out of the woodwork.

He has mentioned that they might do a new tier of backer were you can write a small blurb about your experience of the NES. Then a few pages of that merged with a design. But that's an idea he's floating at the moment.

£60k reached, 16 more pages for a total of 80 extra pages being added, bumping the page count from 242 to 322.

Hot damn, it's pass £65k now, 96 extra pages. At this rate, we might hit both gatefold page goals.

Looks like an awesome book but when I convert their measurements it comes out to 6" x 9", I really thought these books were bigger than that. Especially if they call them coffee table books.

The Amiga book is 7" x 9.5", and I imagine this will be the same since Sam is making this a consistent collection of books.

We're getting the Chibi-Tech CD! Maybe they can add another stretch goal to add more tracks to it?

Damn, woke up to see it at 87k+, can't believe we only got 3 more goals to reach after such a short amount of time.

Kind of wish it were more than one blown up screen shot per game (like maybe a few smaller screens as well), but I will probably back. I started gaming on an NES and this would be nostalgia overload!

90k reached. We've now got a total of 128 extra pages & 4 gatefold pages, adding up to 424 pages.

Also something to note from the last update:

AND we've also added 4 gatefold pages. The idea for these was always to print some really cool horizontal game maps. One backer suggested that maybe I could poll which maps to include. I really like this idea so will open that up once the campaign has finished and things have calmed down.
Wouldn't be surprised if the maps were Metroid &/or Zelda.

I hope he choses the screenshots a bit more carefully. I recently bought the Amiga compendium and was a tad disapointed that some games were represented with screens that did not represent them well. Monkey Island for example has so many iconic images, but the image of the shriveled head wasn't one of them.

Only have the super famicom one (got it discounted somewhere else with free shipping) and it was great! Only real blemish was a small typo my wife found while browsing through the book but it was fun going through the pages and seeing those different boxarts.

Wow, hasn't even been a week & all the stretch goals have been met. Amazing they've reached 4x the goal asked.

Maybe tonight or tomorrow, we'll hear about possibly more stretch goals, like even more pages or extra tracks on the CD.

Edit: Looks like we'll get some new stretch goals soon:

Clearly, I need to think of some new stretch goals, and these will go live very soon. It's quite exciting to imagine how big this book will get!!

There's also a section for backers to leave their own comments about their NES/Famicom memories via one of the update pages (they're aiming for about 100 words each) & there's a chance your comment could be included in a section dedicated to said comments.

I sent him an email asking if I could use a picture of my buddy and I in 4th grade that we sent to Nintendo Power posing with the end screen of Casino Kid (They put us in that high score section in the mag, we were heroes at school!) instead of text. I anxiously await his reply!

PS - someone should really build some kind of badass gambler RPG/Simulator with lavishly detailed Vegas casinos that you could walk around, maybe you could even have them foot some of the bill if you make their casino seem awesome enough. Even 8-bit, walking around the casino was awesome.

New stretch goals are up:

110k = 16 extra pages
115k = 2 more gatefold pages
120k = 16 extra pages
125k = heavy board slipcase
130k = 16 extra pages
135k = inside of dust cover will have an illustration
140k = 16 extra pages
145k = 16 extra pages
150k = 16 extra pages
155k = 16 extra pages
175k = lenticular slipcase

We're already getting another 2 gatefold pages since it was the 105k goal & we're getting closer to 108k as of right now.

If you're wondering what "lenticular" is, it's when you adjust the angle of a picture & you see something else. They linked this video as a visual example.

How many more pages can they add until they scrape the bottom of the barrel? :lol

I imagine there won't be duplicate games.

Wouldn't be surprised if they included some Japan-exclusive games. But yeah, if we hit 155k, the page total will be a whopping 500-ish. Granted, they never said each of the 16 extra pages would be dedicated to 8 more games.

We're past the 120k mark, so 32 more pages & 2 extra gatefold pages.

Update was posted about the fact that if we reach the 135k stretch goal of getting a picture inside the dust cover, it would be illustrated by Marc Ericksen, who did the box arts for NES games like Mega Man 2, Strider, Bad Dudes, & the Tengen versions of Tetris and After Burner.

I just popped in to check the status of the KS
It just got 6 times it's original intended goal, holy crap!

I know, especially when you consider this still has a whopping 3 weeks left. & we're just 2k away from getting the slipcase as well (which I'm sure we'll hit later today).

We reached 135k!! That means we're getting the inside dust cover illustration. 5 more stretch goals.

damn, always late to these things - if a friend got an early bird copy, can they increase the quantity later or is there a set # that's already gone for them too?

Did the kickstarter for the SNES visual compendium do this well? I didn't back that, I just ended up buying it from their site.

Just a heads up that there's a week left for the kickstarter.

As of this post, we're over £148k and the book so far will have 466 pages + 8 gatefold pages. I have a feeling we might barely hit 155k but won't reach the 175k goal of having the slipcover be lenticular.

The book looks great... but $50 for the HB version is too high. Just got the Naughty Dog HB art book for ~$20.
If it was Less than $35 they would have my money. But from the looks of things they dont need it.

Kickstarter is closing in two days - book is now double the original size because of the many backers.

It's also 350 backers short of the last special lenticular slipcase target, so if anyone on GAF is still on the fence this is the moment to back this!

Aw man, we're so close for the lenticular cover. This project has grown immensely since the start and even without the lenticular it'll be amazing. Still, that lenticular cover guys.

Look at the lil' sprites dancing!

I'm just glad we got all the page stretch goals reached. That lenticular slipcase cover would be neat, but I won't be that bummed out if we don't get it.

I think it'll make it's last stretch goal, as it's only £3400 away (and what's a pound worth atm, right) with 35 hours to go. So that's great news for everyone who backed!

3,710
backers
£171,628
pledged of £25,000 goal
35
hours to go

Think we might reach it at this point since it's the final hours & people might quickly back it after payday.

Astounding that it's almost at 7x its original goal.

Oh snap, almost forgot about this. I'll back it when I return home, but I'm guessing there's extra shipping costs involved for shipping the physical rewards to mainland Europe?

It's £2 shipping within UK, it seems. It was a whopping £10 for those in the US.

Click a reward & find your country, it's either £7 or £10 to ship it to outside the UK.
