Nintendo Land: Balloon Trip Breeze trailer

I frankly don't know what to think of this. The game in and of itself does look fun, but not $250/$60 fun, as this is the kind of thing that would go for like ~$1 or be free for iOS/Android. I'm also not sure about having to switch from looking at the pad to looking at the TV screen, as it would probably just end up confusing me. And mind blown at using a stylus on the pad. Wasn't aware of that until now, heh.

It's no wonder people thought WiiU was just a controller; apparently nobody watched the conference/announcement trailer :P

I watched at least part of the conference, but I never thought of using a stylus on the pad, I thought you'd just use your fingers :lol

but they showed the stylus even at E3 2011 (for example showing the "drawing link" app)
BTW, I think that the stylus is perfect for this game, having played Yoshi Touch&Go

You can use your fingers. The stylus just gives you more precision.
Precision is overrated.

Joke aside, apart from tapping the obstacles, I wonder if the stylus will serve other purposes, and justify this control choice over the usual Ballon Trip dpad+button pressing.

Stylus will be used to "draw" the wind in order to move your character, as in Yoshi Touch&Go, if I understand correctly.
Way better to do it with the touch than the sticks, honestly

I don't understand how anyone can be surprised or disappointed by this. It's Balloon Fight controlled with a touch screen, one of those appealing features that the Wii U has that needs to be conveyed to the masses. And it's just one part of an extensive minigame collection. This thread is confusing.

Wii U is just gonna be one massive DS, but with extensive control options. That is about as awesome as it gets, no?

And I am actually laughing my fucking ass off at the proposal that touch screen with your fingers is factually more fun than using a stylus. And the finger painting comparison?! Holy shit...

Looks great! I was a little lukewarm on Nintendoland at first (I think everyone was after the E3 presser). However, I knew I would buy it regardless because I knew the quality would be there - and this just proves it. I'm very impressed.

I stil dont understand what nintendo land wants to be artistically.
They say its a Nintendo theme park, but I dont see any trace what so ever.

All the stages look like if it was a toy land, more akin to something like LBP or Kirby Epic Yarn.
The "theme park" hub (hub? o sorry, I mean 3D menu) looks like a giant strawberry cake.

The only thing I really like of all of this is the logo, mascot and music in the hub, those are the only things that feel like a real theme park.

Instead of maximize what a real theme park would bring to the table with Nintendo properties, it just seems that they slapped the word nintendo land just becuase, without any asthetic think to it.

The game can be fun, but im totally unimpressed and dissapointed with it, becuase this idea of a Nintendo theme park, coul have been an amazing game, and it only use as a minigame collection ala wiiplay.

It would be cool if they had a bunch of modes like the Kid Icarus flying section in the main hub world of the game. Playing that I always feel like I'm on a Disney ride. Or the Harry Potter ride for you Universal fans. Maybe it's just because I grew up around theme parks my entire life.

I think that this actually fit very well the idea of a Nintendo theme park

Yeah, the handmade aesthetic is perfect for this game. It evokes the idea that Nintendo Land is a construction -- something constructed to resemble the various Nintendo franchises. Also adds a bit of texture without compromising the simplicity of the Miis. :)

Yeah, looks very cute and colourful. Love the look of Nintendo Land so far (mostly). The only thing is the hub area seemed a bit gaudy, at least based on what I remember of the E3 footage.

So, why not call it Nintendo Toybox instead?
This is not really what a theme park is.

I care, the asthetic for me is wrong.
Is what I call an opinion, you can think otherwise if you want.
The hub world still looks like a giant strawberry cake.

That's fine, you're allowed to like or dislike it. I'm just saying if your problem with the game is the fact that it's likened to a theme park but looks like a toy set, well... ultimately it's a video game, so it doesn't matter.

Also, as I said above, I too am not terribly fond of how the hub area looks. Too gaudy. But the games themselves are lovely, artistically.

Just watched the trailer. Looks fun in a Yoshi's Touch and Go pick-up-and-play sort of way. I am sure that I will love this.

Yeah, im not saying that the art in the games is not nice, because it really is very pleasant to look, and really colorfull. But as I said, for me it doesnt look what the creators wanted the game to be. And I think, even if its a videogame, I would not call it a dog if it really was a cat, in my opinion of course.

I see it more as a problem of japanese not knowing how for the love of god make a theme park that doenst look like a bad mix of scenery and rides plunged on top of a parking lot.
(Disneyland Tokyo and Tokyo DisneySEA was designed by americans).

I suppose the majority of people dont really care, but for me, that I love theme parks, its a dissapointment. :(

That's fair, I guess. :)

I'm not really too hung up on the "theme park" angle, to me it's just a minigame collection with a hub area that's slightly reminiscent of what you might consider a theme park.

If you really wanted to stretch your suspension of disbelief, you could probably think of the attractions as being virtual reality type games within the park.

Nah, thats what I dont want real parks to turn into. Im more of an oldschool animatronic rides fan :)

Nintendo is constantly going for cute. That's all, really. It doesn't have to have a consistent style or intent or merit. If it's cute, it's good to go.
So Nintendo Land will probably just look like cute: the theme park.

Edit: Best example of Nintendo's new philosophy is probably the New Super Mario games, which have COD Font levels of art inconsistency and lack of direction but everything is cute maxed out no matter the end result.

Well, I wouldnt say that Disneyland isnt cute.
As I said, i would have understand if it was called Nintendo Toybox, becuase thats what really its athestics are, but I would have prefered something more similar to Disneyland, with a cute main street and hub, surrounded with different art styles for different sagas, or lands, in this case.
I think they just lost the chance to make something unique with the theme park idea, instead of what the game is right now.

EDIT:
This looks a fucking mess, im sorry, but the art department failed at creating something visually pleasing.
It looks as it was taken directly from a Mario Party table, with even more scenery added on top.

that doesn't even look like anything legible. I don't even know what I am supposed to be looking at. As for Balloon Fight.. OG NES game, always loved it, in fact I got in a bit of play with it last week for old time's sake and it still held up nicely. One of the best of the early titles to be sure. But showing it off like this, on the eve of the system's (supposed) launch plans announcement - man, Sony and MS must be kinda biting their tongues at this stuff right now. I mean - what do you even say to this? Obviously Nintendo are going their own route these days (they already have been for years now) but it really feels like the train is coming off of the rails in a way.

It's strange around here, feels like people are excited about WiiU simply because it is "something new to buy" (made by a very popular company with an enormous legacy, natch) but not necessarily that it is "something COOL and new to buy." I am a Nintendo fan as much as anyone - NES will always be my #1 game system - but I really will be surprised if this WiiU stuff doesn't land with a thud.

FWIW, I had serious doubts about anyone in the world giving half a crap about the iPad as well, so take that as you will - but that's kind of apples and oranges, pardon the pun.

I wish this was more Mario Party and less Wii Play, at least in terms of scale :(

Also seems like it would control better with button, or even motion.

motion I do not think would be accurate enough, and possibly could be easier with buttons, but not sure how you could pop things and break blocks with precision while also controlling the baloons.

the touchscreen adds difficulty while also letting you quickly and precisely multitask

Man, this just really demonstrates the genius and mass appeal that was Wii Sports.

WiiSports-Menu.jpg

Simple menu. Simple interface. Clean design.

The ultimate tech demo that I still enjoy to this day (particularly the bowling training games).

yeah I remember saying the same thing after the E3 presser. So gaudy, busy, and no focus. Needs a cleaner look, and maybe more spread out.

Would be great if it was somethign like mario 64 castle hub, where you could have your mii run around, and it was just fun to go to different places and jump around, etc. as you make your way to attractions in the park. Even just a generic castle seems way more fitting for somethign called Nintendoland, than this hub.

I don't think it looks like a toybox. The attractions look like cheap animatronic versions of Nintendo IPs. The problem with the hub is that it's a garishly decorated floating circle in the ribbon dimension. It'd be better if you could see the attractions from the hub.

I love this description. "Ribbon dimension." XD

I would imagine that the environment would be far more tolerable for the perspective of the player walking around inside. The will be a relatively tiny character situated in the center, and each of those arches is pretty large with a distinct logo above it. This is just a terrible and impractical angle

Thats the problem that I have with this game, even a simple tribute, with a cartoon main street (ala toontown) and a hub that goes to different nintendo lands and a huge Peach Castle infront of the Mario land (Mushroom kingdom). Yeah, its obviously a blatant tribute to Disneyland, but it would have been awesome to see. And aven better if you could traverse this park with your mii on foot.
The only thing I see with this hub is a horrible menu that looks like a messy Mario Party table.

Its really not, we have seen in new trailers that in every angle the hub still looks really messy, with the party particles falling all the time making it even more of a blurry mess. With all the objects animated, like a train and the ridley audioanimatronic. Its horror vacui to the max.

Maybe the hub is crowded and tacky on purpose, making the actual minigames when you arrive at them, completely clean and easily playable/focus-able in contrast.

Yes, I know this is not likely their intent but that's how I will go about seeing it all, a means to an end.

I think people have a tendency to pick apart hubs too much but they are relevant to the presentational value if irrelevant to the specific functionality.

To me, the hub doesn't look "Nintendo-ish" to some because of who is creating the game.

If EAD Tokyo was making it, it'd look more to their liking.

I don't think different means un-Nintendo-like personally, especially when they aren't literal takes of Nintendo IPs.

Looks significantly better than the actual hub.

(and I do think this is an actual missed opportunity, given the tremendous popularity of disneyland and theme parks in japan. No idea what the hell they were thinking here)

Much better than what Nintendo did, and thats nothing more than a Six Flags mixed with Disneyland idea done by a kid. Its sad the kid had a better feeling of what a park is than the designers of the game though.

I had an amazing map I did for a real Nintendo Land for one of my projects on the fine arts university, with a commercial, etc... as part of a work with an existing IP creating something new out of it. So I did, what if disney worked with nintendo to make a theme park.
Here is the commercial.
http://vimeo.com/24506373
BTW the main street you see in the commercial is based in New York becuase of its tied to the history of the resurrecting of consoles and the NES.
The map is in my old hard drive (would love to post it here), and it was the park thought as realistic as possible to work for real, maybe a little to big for its own good though, and I wanted to scale it back a little since I made it.

Actually looks pretty fun - everything except that god awful music.

The only thing that worries me about this game (and potentially the other NL games) is I don't see a SCORE. I was hoping leaderboards would be a main driver for a lot of game players with a ga,e like this, so I hope scoring isn't an after thought here. Combos, tricks, etc. would go a long way for a game like this.

Then again, you do seem to acquire score for balloons - just strange you don't have a total on screen at all times.

At least that's what I imagine most Nintendoland games to be focused on - scoring. Would be nice to see nintendo and gamers put the focus on scoring again.

You damn kids with your unlimited lives and cloud saves! (shakes fist in air)

that god awful music.

I hope you're referring to the specific arrangements used here and not the Balloon Fight theme in general, because otherwise I'd have to smack you. All up in yo' face.

I think the arrangements are pretty snazzy though. Some were a bit hard to hear well with all of those sound effects going off, but for those whose melodies I caught, they sounded nice.

I recall someone saying that they were adding an endless mode and that they were expecting people to compete for score via the leaderboards/Miiverse.

Totally agreed.

Last December I visited Disney Land for the first time ever with. I was discussing with a friend (a fellow gaffer) how awesome it would be if Nintendo made something similar but on a small scale (way smaller scale).
The moment this game was announced I was totally amazed.. only to be disappointed a few minutes after that. One of my first thoughts was "Why didn't they show the themed areas?" lol :(

Also your video is amazing, although a hypothetical Nintendo Land wouldn't be that Disneylandesque.

I was hoping Nintendoland consists of tons of fun, little multiplayer games... like a collection of things that feel like Bomberman, Worms, etc. and explore the asynchronous gameplay aspects of the tablet / tv, but this here is quite underwhelming.

Hope there's at least 2-3 cool games in there that are tons of fun during couch multiplayer.

I think that has alot to do with Japanese people at Nintendo making a themepark, not Americans. I think the idea of a theme park in Japan is a little different to what we are used to. yea, it woulda been sweet if they did a Disnintendoland, or even something that resembles a Theme Park World, but thats not Japan or Nintendo..

"Asymmetrical", not "asynchronous". Big difference.
