Nintendo Outlines Ink-redible Free Splatoon Demo Events and Post-Launch Content

The game comes out at the end of the month. This industry has really destroyed the meaning of the term "beta".

This is, as they have called it, an online demo.

I'm pretty sure it's meant to serve as a stress test for their servers with the side effect of also acting as a demo.

There's no other reason to limit a demo to set one-hour periods.

Post launch contents are free, it's so rare nowadays.
On the one hand free support is a good thing.

On the other hand a lot of this sounds like stuff that should have been in at launch.

Unless I'm reading this incorrectly, the game is launching with five maps and no friend matchmaking.

It's an odd strategy, but it appears Nintendo is attempting to answer questions that may not be asked at times.

We'll see if it works

But their strategy seems to be two-fold

1)Attempt to keep Splatoon in the news with new maps, modes, gears, contests and the sort

2)Make it new-user friendly for as long as possible. Hence why even if you join friends games end up with randomized teams so folks don't enter and start trucking through other teams. Which would sour other people on the experience.

The counter is of course, you can only get better by being challenged

It's an odd gamble, we'll see. not too keen on it

It allows you to play with friends but yeah, you're not able to actually make "friend exclusive" lobbies to match up your own friend team with another, or just have 8 friends at once.

It's a bit nonsensical that the game is full retail in the US but that Europe is getting it for lower. Under the European standard retail it makes a little more sense for it to launch with the content that's there but I imagine the American audience would preferably wait for a few weeks until the free content is done. I don't really believe that content was "withheld" from the full game or hidden anywhere since most of this seems like it was developed after the certification cycle (and a free DLC plan is a pretty good thing to have to generally "make up" for it) but it seems like they wanted this game done before E3 (like MK8) and I wouldn't blame people for putting off a $60 purchase for a couple of weeks.

It's nice that Nintendo are at least upfront about it. The game doesn't seem like it's going anywhere in terms of support and I feel like that was one of the key reasons why games like Hyrule Warriors enjoyed a good longevity. Hopefully same goes here.

Oh good, I can actually play tomorrow!

This sounds like an interesting stress test. Debating on whether or not I want that pre-order though.

EDIT: Wait, so Saturday's first demo is at 4 in the morning? Anyone actually gonna stay up for that?

Yeah, I think you're right. You can join matches with friends, but you can't do custom matches until later. It's really strange...especially considering that it seems a number of these held stages are already done (I think people have played them at demo events). They described them in the video as being more advanced stages, so I guess they're assuming people won't have fun on them until they have more skill? And that takes two months to get? I don't really get the logic Nintendo is following with the updates of this game...

For me, this doesn't really impact me, since I'm not sure when I'll have the time to play this game. Buying it at launch, but by the time I get around to playing it, all the free content might already be released.

It's world-wide. They can't pick a time that works for everyone, that's why there's three periods.

How many people have friends that own a Wii U? I'm only speaking anecdotally, but I only have 3 others and only one of them is even going to buy the game. As long as I can jump into the game with them then I don't particularly mind. Granted it hurts online communities until it comes out (for free), but I also don't like joining online group community lobbies anyway.
