Nintendo Paid Online Services Include Free NES/SNES Game Every Month (for that month)

And honestly? I don't care if the monthly game is LoZ or Super Mario Brothers. It's still a decades old game you can play (and have played) a million other places being lent to you for a month.

I don't care how much you love the game. That's not fucking value. That's not even approaching fucking value.

The service is not even close to paying itself off with a proposition like that.
That's the other thing. We're talking about NES ROMs here. Nintendo sold 30 of them with hardware to play them for 60 bucks this holiday, and even that was pretty pricey.

If Nintendo made a powerhouse console they'd complain about having to pay $400+ for a Nintendo system and another online monthly fee on top of the others they're already paying for. :p

My point is that if they released a powerhouse console people would be complaining that doesn't have native voice chat, has a smart phone app as an online interface, offers one month rentals of 30 year old games as a 'perk', and probably a bunch of other bullshit we don't know about yet (I guarantee their paid online service still has friend codes).

Paying to play games only for 30 days, is a rental, yes.

That's not what you're paying for. You're paying for the service to play vidyagames online. The monthly games aren't the core concept of the service. If you're paying for the service FOR the monthly games I mean, don't do that :p

I don't pay for Xbox Live or Plus for the games. They're a nice bonus though.

I'm talking about how the service is to play online. The monthly games aren't the focus.
What thread are you in? He's not talking about that, the thread is about the games, and I was talking to him about the games. It's pretty clear.

The service is another item all together that's messed up.

Donkey Kong Jr. Math and Baloon Fight destroy this shovelware list.

Don't even get me started on Urban Champion.

The main point of my post was that people will pay the sub because of the online. The fact they are only giving away old nes games won't matter. With ps plus I get 6 games but they are essentially six games I have rarely had an interest in playing. That's 5 games more than Nintendo but if I don't play them is that really extra value?

Ps plus used to give away great (and recent) games but when they brought the ps4 that seemed to stop. The number of subs went up though because of the paid online.

I think the issue Nintendo has is that they don't have enough online games to justify an online subscription, definitely so at launch.

Nintendo's service is not even close to what Sony and MS offer. I mean you will need a phone to friggin use voice chat, sony and MS give 2 free games a month and you can keep them for the whole sub. They have cloud saves, sony has couch coop in shareplay, trophies, achievements. Comparing sony/MS to what nintendo is offering is a joke.

It'll have to be a lot cheaper than XBL/PS+ to justify itself.

If they're going to cut off those free games after a month (and not the subscription), it's a bad value.

The voice chat being on a smartphone is ridiculous as well. They HAVE to build that into the system. It's a hassle to juggle a smartphone with this thing.

This is completely ridiculous. Especially since your previous purchases aren't simply ported over.

This is so dumb. I can't even.

At least with the other platforms we can be happy or not with the games but those stick for as long as you are subscribed.

Yes?

That's on you if you want to miss out on a good game.

Everyone has different tastes. PS Plus is giving everyone options.

Why would anyone be excited about a paid online service that also gives you what is basically a 30 day trial of a 20 to 30 year old game.

I would agree with you there but that's not really the discussion at hand.

Fair enough. I just don't get ridiculing an entire service, one we still don't have a lot of info over, because of how the "extras" are being handled. I'm not saying it's awesome, but it's also early days yet.

If you order a steak at a restaurant is the potato on the side a free bonus or something that's factored into the price of your steak?

We all value these things differently.

The fact is, Nintendo have done *nothing* to convince me that they can provide an online service worth paying for. They have made zero promises about improving their servers or online infrastructure with the new revenue stream.

If Nintendo were *at the very least* offering comparable or better bonuses or value adds, I'd be much more open to taking a risk to pay for their online network. But they aren't.

They aren't doing anything to convince me this is going to be worth paying for. They have a poor history when it comes to running online services, and they're offering a comparatively terrible bonus.

So... yeah. They either need to price this thing much cheaper, or they need to do something to justify why it's equally worth paying for as what their competitors offer. They have fallen very very very short of doing that.

Well so far this service requires an app on your phone to voice chat and their 'free games' offering is far, far more gimped than their competitors. It's not looking too hot so far.

That's uh, not how this is going to work. You won't get to play VC games online, Nintendo still hasn't figured out how to do a good unified online account system yet.

Yeah, the games aren't even that good /s

Oh, hey, has anyone mentioned the amazing PS Plus discounts every month vs Nintendo's notoriously shitty sales and evergreen MSRP?

This is what i'm used to Nintendo.

Throw me a bone here. Please.

They probably should have waited before throwing "NES/SNES" out there. They could have said "FREE GAME EVERY MONTH" and we could have all assumed N64/GCN/Wii were likely to be thrown in there but nooooooo

We can only discuss the info they gave us.

That's not what you're paying for. You're paying for the service to play vidyagames online. The monthly games aren't the core concept of the service. If you're paying for the service FOR the monthly games I mean, don't do that :p

I don't pay for Xbox Live or Plus for the games. They're a nice bonus though.

I would have a very hard time, justifying having to pay 50€/year to play online on a PS4, if it wasn't because the free games.

And I'll have a even harder time, justifying having to pay both PS+ and Nintendo service, if they don't offer me some incentives that isn't online play.

The way I see it is: I'm paying for both things, free games and online play.

Here's my random pipedream; it might only be $5 for a year.
Nintendo already has a subscription service; Pokemon Bank cost just $5 for a year and they usually give you some sort of bonus Pokemon when you renew.

I'd like to hope its right around that price point for the full year; and then they explain the games as basically little gifts throughout the year to try out.

I really can't see them charging anywhere near what Microsoft and Sony charge unless there's a significant value for it.

The way I see it is: I'm paying for both.

That's fair. If I didn't want to play online I wouldn't pay for any online-play service. The extras are a nice incentive but not the steak and potatoes of the deal IMO.

I hold a tiny bit of hope it's not $50/60 a year, but knowing Nintendo, they would do that without a second thought. $5 a year though? A year? Way less of a chance of that than seeing $50/60.

Daylight robbery.

Nintendo really isn't treating it's fans well.

Heck, people are even saying that they shouldn't have put 32GB at all. Nintendo knows their fans will do anything, Kimishima is just going balls deep.

Hardcore fans will accept this and chant "we're not worthy".

Can you imagine if they didn't specify now? And we all thought at least N64? THEN they specify later it's a NES OR SNES game?

1 step forward, 30 years backwards.

Oh Nintendo, maybe one day you'll figure this whole cyberz and services thing out

"Confirmed by NOA: Monthly free classic game on Switch is indeed only available for that month. More deets on Virtual Console before launch."

"Sheesh, even my explanation was unclear. Sorry.

After a month, you can no longer PLAY the monthly Switch online classic unless you buy it."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Nintendo will not get the next mainline COD game that's the definite edition. Or Battlefield etc. Paying for online on a Nintendo system doesn't make sense as most people get a Nintendo system for the occasional exclusives. Also when Switching h goes down in price and you have multiple kids with Switch systems and Pokémon. Will they all need to pay for online.

This seems absurd. I actually don't mind Nintendo had crappy online as long as it worked. All I wanted is a account system and be able to easily add or invite friends

THIS! I want to play Spatoon 2 with my wife. I'll have to buy two systems and pay twice for an online service that already looking inferior to the competition...I don't know if I'm seeing the value here.

Are you serious right now

If you subscribe to a service then you are paying for all of the features included in that service. You don't get to pick and choose which services you are paying for and which are 'free'. If the monthly NES/SNES games were not included the service would (presumably) be cheaper.

For a hot second, I thought Nintendo was actually going to put some effort into the Switch launch. Turns out that they are. They're doing everything in their power to make sure this crazy thing crashes and burns.

What a joke.

Shit, if you're going to pull off the whole absurd pay for online bullshit like the rest of them, at least have it involve the least amount of bullshit as possible. Nintendo isn't exactly in a position to get away with that.

Maybe. But really, how much could it be costing them to offer NES & SNES games for free? They're tiny in terms of file size & unless they're doing some sort of massive network overhaul, a load of them are already up on their current service.

Doubt it'd be cheaper. As I've said you're primarily paying to play online. The extras add to the value, yes, but it's not the reason to pay for it. So we have different perspectives on that; if I didn't want to play Xbox or Playstation online, I wouldn't pay for their service, regardless of what freebies I get. It's all part of the package, sure, but the extras aren't the core of it. That being said, they need to price this right and we'll see how it plays out.

Is nintendo stupid enough to think people will like this or evil enough to milk its most dedicated fans for everything as its hardware business dies?
