Nintendo TVii is shutting down on August 11th

The only good thing about them doing this (this meaning TVii as I'm sure the functionality wouldn't even be there if TVii didn't exist) was the feature on the GamePad where you can use it as your TV's remote -- makes it very easy to turn on the TV and subsequently the Wii U if you couldn't be arsed to get your remote.

Otherwise, pretty useless application though.

When will the icon be removed? What will replace it? I smell an OS update.
Wishful thinking.
In Europe most recent FW update removed the icon (never launched) and nothing replaced it.

Thing is TVii still existed in the OS. If you ran it right beofre installing the FW update you could get it onto your quick start menu. Whenever the quick start menu got updated though it vanished.

(this meaning TVii as I'm sure the functionality wouldn't even be there if TVii didn't exist)

the basic remote (the physical "TV" button) is a separate thing. TVii is basically a web app but does offer more remote "buttons."

It was never even useful, it was just a bloated TV Guide with a Miiverse chat option when watching a love TV show.

I never understood why any game company thought TV plus game systems was such a game changer. It's such a huge step backwards from streaming.

At one point, Microsoft stated that more users were using the Xbox 360 as a streaming video machine than as a gaming machine. I think there was data on the subject as well, don't remember that clearly. But that's probably the idea behind it. If people are using the console as a NetFlix box, let's make a better NetFlix box.

Unfortunately that led to the wishy-washy marketing and design for both Wii U and the Xbox One that couldn't settle on whether it was targeting the casual consumer or the hardcore consumer.

I used it briefly before those small Comcast digital adapters got an onscreen guide. TVii was okay for that purpose.

Yup, never even launched in Europe. It's funny, I made a thread wondering why it was even on the main menu if it couldn't be used over here and within a week there was an update which removed it.

I've had the Wii U since near launch and I still don't know what TVii was supposed to do or how to even use it. All I care about is my Wii U pad being able to act as a secondary remote.

It was pretty fun to use for sports stuff. You could draw on screen caps of the play by plays posted and people did some funny things.

Are people really wondering what this is?

Did you guys forget that thing that they (allegedly) made the design of the WiiU in the first place?

To control your TV!

I never used it! :(

God, I really was into Everybody Votes channel way harder than I ever expected to be back in the day.

Same, I'll admit, I enjoyed that much more than I expected.

I used it a handful of times. The whole idea seemed promising since the Wii U can also be used as a TV remote. But it was unbearably cumbersome and slow to use. It was just easier to do the same thing with my phone or tablet.

It was cool when I had this icon on my Gamepad of a TV that did nothing and then one day the icon disappeared, RIP.

The two times I opened it it took multiple minutes to bring up 12 of the 400 channels I have, only one of which I occasionally care about, and then locked my Wii U when trying to do anything. So not really sure what it did.

Could have been a really robust, and fantastic feature, especially for families and the casual demo. Too bad it was clumsy, and Nintendo mishandled its messaging on TVii so staggeringly.
