Nintendo WFC: how is region determined?

Searched for Nintendo WFC region and couldn't find anything useful ..

Was this figured out yet? Is it based on the region of the game or of the hardware you use?

Cause I have, for the time being, MP: Hunters (the US version) preordered online and I really dont wanna be forced (in case it has the same Regional option as Mario Kart, or however it will choose your opponents) to play only with Americans. You don't notice the lag so much in MK, but I'm guessing it will be a totally different story with something as precise as a FPS ..

This guy speaks the truth! (no shit sherlock!)

PS. have you checked your PM's yet Gaybrush?

Seems odd.

Is there a technical reason it doesn't do region based on IP?

There are several, the first of which is that the games actually do differ from regional release to regional release. Obviously if worldwide play is going to be possible, the online experience must be identical, but it doesn't necessarily mean that underlying network code or offline aspects of the game are the same. Opening the hole to make WFC blind to which version of the software you're running would be particularly bothersome as it could introduce all sorts of unexpected happenstance. (e.g. You're playing Japanese Mario Kart as a North American IP and the server tries pushing you a message that's not stored on the cart--then it has to double-back and determine that you're actually one of 140 NA players using a Japanese cart and push Japanese text at you; which is non-trivial if the message is being pushed by an English-speaking service representative. That's as high level as it gets, just about every worthwhile example would be regarding underlying network code).
