Nintendo Wii: TIME Magazine Exclusive

Kintaco said:
I think it is about a "new" Nintendo game, or else why even use "Exclusive" on the title? anyway, it'll be out after E3 it seems so it will be non-news.
No it won't; it'll be on newsstands by tomorrow.

Most college students on here can probably read it through the library's site -- it's on Lexis-Nexis. I'll post the whole thing if a mod gives me permission, but here's the excerpt that actually talks about the games:

sounds like they are fucking sold on the idea. Cant wait to see how Wario Ware and that Tennis game play at E3.

And this becomes the new fanboy insult - "a loser, a blank-eyed joystick fondler" :lol :lol quality

Well put Iwata, as much as nintendo has pissed me off over the years, thats an excellent point. At the end of the day, they make great profits.

That quote wasn't actually said by Iwata. That was Time Magazine's bit.

Hmm... interesting article, but I guess Nintendo is still keeping a lid on the big surprises until Tuesday. I wonder if Twilight Princess actually has been switched to Wii.

So how about packing wario ware in with every Wii. Could introduce a few concepts, make them comfortable with the wiimote.

"If you are simply listening to requests from the customer, you can satisfy their needs, but you can never surprise them. Sony and Microsoft make daily-necessity kinds of things. They have to listen to the needs of the customers and try to comply with their requests. That kind of approach has been deeply ingrained in their minds."
This new Nintendo attitude that they keep spewing out is starting to become tiresome and damn near offputting. This holier-than-thou air of superiority that Nintendo is conveying with regards to the direction of the Wii is absurd, hypocritical and narrow-minded. It's so ridiculous that the path they themselves road along for 20+ years, they are now trying to convince us is all of a sudden archaic and detrimental to gaming on the whole, and the Wii, the only true bastion of innovation (because innovation in games should have more to do with the controller, not, you know, the actual games), is giving the consumer an experience Sony and Microsoft could never hope to achieve.

I know I'll probably get ragged on for this, but honestly, I find it insanely arrogant for Nintendo to near completely downplay 30 years of videogame innovation and evolution simply because they're deciding to use a different controller. It continually distracts me from just focusing on what they show next week, irregardless of the other guys, and hoping it turns out to look fun.

I swear someone argued with me that WarioWare wasn't coming a while back. How the fuck am I going to track that down? I need to prove my e-penis is bigger dammit.

Hulahoop? :lol I don't midn the idea, though some will, but how the fuck are they going to pack that in!

Thats exactly what they want to do when it comes to their whole marketing strategy. Thats what the whole Blue Ocean strategy is about. You'll bitch at them now, but they will probably be very successful thanks to it.

No... I can't remember who it was, but one of the main Nintendo reps (it was either Kaplan, Harrison, or Reggie) was quoted a few days ago as saying that it would "be playable on GameCube."

They have serious competition and they want to expand their business past the core gamers. If they only listened to the core gamers than they would never expand their business.

wario ware wii how fucking predictable... where am my new franchises bitches?

this wario ware game better cost 10 dollars.

and pilotwiings better be at e3.

Good job, good job. :P

The tennis thing is interesting as it's not mentioned as Mario Tennis. Which makes sense as Camelot are apparently making an RPG, but it's such an obvious idea Nintendo werne't just going to let it go. I also suspect they see it as a good game to bring in non-gamers who'd quite like to play tennis...but probably aren't going to play a tennis game with a giant ape in it.

My thoughts:

Zelda confirmation:D
Warioware :D
Tennis FUCKING SWEET although I have a feeling this may be one of those 'tech demos'

The article also has a sidebar with a few screenshots (which I don't have, obviously, since Lexis-Nexis is text-only). Here are the captions:

TWO PHOTOS: Ramona Rosales for TIME; PHOTO
MAGIC WAND: It looks like a remote, but Nintendo's new game controller senses a player's hand movement; PHOTO: FRED PROUSER--REUTERS
THE LEADER: Satoru Iwata started as a game designer and rose to become Nintendo's fiercely independent president; FOUR PHOTOS
ZELDA In the new installment, Twilight Princess, Link fights with sword, bow and boomerang. Aiming is a snap: just point at the enemy and fire away
RAYMAN With the full (and rather odd) name of Rayman Raving Rabbids, it will feature a skewed sense of humor and lots of bloodthirsty bunnies
RED STEEL Nintendo isn't known for violent game play. But in this yakuza-themed shooter, players will live (and die) by both gun and sword
TENNIS The graphics aren't much, but the game play is hilarious. The controller becomes your racket ; PHOTO: FRED PROUSER--REUTERS
THE LEGEND: Gaming's answer to Steven Spielberg, Shigeru Miyamoto scored with his first creation, the arcade classic Donkey Kong; PHOTO
NEW DOG, NEW TRICKS In Nintendogs, for the portable Nintendo DS, players train a virtual (but very cute) puppy. It's part of Nintendo's attempt to lure female gamers

So, we have a new Wario Ware Game: and this is a good news, but not so inexpected, because the Wiimote is almost made for it.
Then Twilight Princess, with the possibilty to fish, and this is really nothing new.
And a Tennis Game. But developed by Nintendo ? By some Third Party Editors ? By who ?

Good interview in complex.

TENNIS The graphics aren't much, but the game play is hilarious. The controller becomes your racket

I wonder if this means it's a demo like DS demos rather than a proper game, just to show what the system is capable of.

Or it could just have shit graphics.

EDIT: Damn you Peru.

Not the country.

Plz let that tennis demo be a full game ready for launch. That would rock so much.

And I'm sure Rockstar will bring over Table Tennis, if a regular tennis game proves to be a succes. :)

That's Mike Myers in an old SNL skit, with the Rayman thread kid's head photoshopped on.

Good news, but I really hope Mario shows at E3. I wouldn't expect them to first reveal him to Time, though.

How does a small headling reading "Nintendo's New Game" qualify as "marketing to non-gamers" exactly?

No, dear, it's the article that the headline belongs to that is marketing here.

5 pages behind? Who? Me?

I actually agree with Nintendo in the sense about not listening to their customers. I hate to say this, but people generally do not know what they want.

As just an example from my experiences with MMORPG's, I can sympathize with their approach. Developers give in the vocal minority on the boards, trying to please everyone and going down that slippery slope. A nerf here, a tweak there, pretty soon the game gets tailored to the hardcore and the elite, never happy or satisfied, and casual newbies are no longer welcome and eventually get cut out.

Obviously this analogy isn't exactly like the game industry. I don't agree that the industry has stopped growing, or that Microsoft or Sony have stopped attracting casuals. It's yet to be proven that Nintendo will attract that larger demographic, but I do find it refreshing (and understand why it's necessary for them to blaze their own trail in a business sense) for them to at least try.

Wah wah wah I'm not nintendo's only target market anymore wah wah

Seriously, you sound like a child who's jealous after a new born. Nintendo aren't just dealing with the hardcore anymore, deal with it. If you don't like it, stop complaining. The 360 and PS3 aren't going to dissapear into thin air when Wii is released! You still have 2 hardcore traditional consoles.

wario ware wii with multiplayer will be sooo fun. hopefully it has an online leaderboard too to compare scores

+ poor graphics = confirmation

I think Nintendo may have these tech demos for sale on the virtual console? Pack-ins?

That is how every game is created though.. especially at Nintendo. The idea and mechanics come first.
Yeah.. it might become a game. But if he played it now, and the "graphics ain't much", I'm betting it's one of a series of tech demos presented at e3, akin to DS tech demos.

That has absolutely nothing to do with my post. Good job.

I'm not at my best but I swear this makes absolutely no sense to me. So let me get this straight. It's necessary not to listen to hardcore gamers all the time because they have to satisfy the casual customers too. Is that what he means? But (as far as the name is conserned) I've asked casual gamers and they find the name even more retarded and embarrassing than I do. WHAT THE HELL IS HE TALKING ABOUT?
He's not talking about the name there. He's just saying that they want to make a splash with new experiences. People weren't clamoring for Brain Age, Nintendogs, 3D GTA, analog sticks, or touch screens until they saw or tried them.

funny how the he found the game with the worst graphics to be the most fun.
