Nippon Ichi is fine! It was a mistranslation, d00ds.

Maybe they should put their games on more then 1 platform. Japan does not care about home consoles are much as they used to now days.

By dead you mean it's no longer supported and games aren't still being released for it in Japan or Western Markets, then no, It's not dead.

not really, the user base for PS3 in Japan is still higher than Vita and PS4 combined, thanks to VN and things released on PS3. Though it looks like people started to shift to Vita, but not PS4, not yet anyway.

The user base is there, yes. Those consoles don't disappear into thin air. The buyer base looks to be gone.

WTF! no way... nooooooooooooooooo!!!!

They are the main japanese niche games importers with NISA, if they are out of the market ... well I'm screwed.

Honestly, the company is suffering because of their backward thinking. This type of game will never sell alone on PS4. They need to port some of their backlog to ios/Steam to have any chance of success. Having a short sighted vision of focusing on the Japanese market is hurting them badly.

sony doesn't care enough to buy a struggling japanese developer. they would be sure to shut down nis america too, i'm sure.

Yeah. I mean, they only (more or less) recently disbanded one of their oldest studios (Liverpool). I don't get why people think that Sony
1) would be interested
and
2) would be good news.

Also, Sony wouldn't really gain anything. If no one is willing to pick up NIS or the Disgaea franchise, they obviously aren't worth it, and if someone does, future games would likely come out on Sony's platforms anyway.

I wonder if a 6 year old port like Valkyria Chronicles getting to #1 on Steam tells them anything about what they should do with their huge catalog of SRPG titles.

Even if they meet their sales expectations, there's no way they'll be in business long. You're not in a good position if you're living title by title.

In fairness, VC was a well funded and unique game. Disgaea is neither.

Any word on VC steam numbers?

I think Disgaea is quite unique. Not the individual games but the series. Anyway, my favourite game of theirs is actually Phantom Brave. Which is very unique.

As for budget, I really think that a large portion of the Steam audience doesn't care much.

What competition? Who's making stragtegy turn based RPG's on consoles these days?

This is why I get pissed when people ask for this series to evolve. Fuck that shit. There are too few turn based games on consoles these days.

The reason for that is that strategy games don't sell (well) on concoles.

Which is the last TBS game that sold a lot of copies on consoles?

Meanwhile, handhelds, phones and PC's all have numerous successful strategy titles. 2 out of those platforms are also very big in Japan.

Instead they bet everything on PS4.. even though it's sells afwully in their home market and the sales of their PS3 entries weren't exactly growing. Doesn't seem l ike a great idea.

This is obviously armchair analysis and i do hope it works out for them.

I've never played Disgaea, though I've heard a few friends sing its praises. I'm not sure if this is the type of game I'd like, to be honest. I'm also not sure if the 5th installment is the best time to jump in. Will I be missing a lot?

The reason I ask is because I don't like seeing talented developers go out of business if I can help it. I mean, I already have a PS4, and a studio that's releasing it's 5th installment of a niche franchise must be doing something right, eh?

I think NIS already tried Steam... but they failed. Of cpurse that was with an unknown IP.

I'm hoping that if NIS ends up going under, NISA will somehow find a way to survive on their own, just localizing other companies games.
Or at least keep their anime division open. They have some of the best video quality for anime Blu-Rays on the North American market.

Wow, hope NIS can make it through. That doesn't make it sound like the company is in great shape at all.

We've known this for a while. The fact that they're now openly talking about it is horrifying, though.

Edit:

In commemoration of Playstations 20th Anniversary over 107 developers will leave a comment about Playstation in the coming 3 weeks. NIS left a peculiar one:

Nippon Ichi Software (Shinkawa Sohei):

It was stated earlier this year that the company is targeting 150k copies of Disgaea 5. May God help their poor souls.

Wait, they just said that out of the blue in an unrelated discussion? Holy crap, they must be in really, REALLY bad shape.

IT'S LIKE YOU WANT THEM TO DIE.

No not really! It's just unfortunate that their portfolio is so specifically niche.

My gaming tastes changed over time, and I would have liked to see them grow their franchises a bit more.

Take Vanillaware, for example. I feel like they've made efforts to keep themselves relevant. Dragon's Crown is a good example of how they've taken their expertise and art-flair in side-scrolling RPGs like Odin's Sphere and transposed it to a broadly-appealing Dragon's Crown.

Or Atlus, and the way they made a conscious choice to push the Persona series in different directions (see P3 and P4, as opposed to say the Shin Megami series), and also to team up with Arc System Works to make a fighting game using Persona characters.

NIS did good by having their Danganronpa series crossover into an TPS-action-adventure game (see: Danganronpa Another Adventure). They should try to do the same for Disgaea as well.

NIS Business Strategy:

1. make Disgaea to save company
2. make a bunch of stuff no one wants
3. repeat step 1

didn't they try the same sob story with D4?

Yikes, them talking about this publicly is a very bad sign. Hoping for the best, but hard to get too hopeful knowing D5 is being released the same day as Bloodborne.

NIS does not own Danganronpa. Danganronpa is developed and owned by Spike Chunsoft. NISA, the English localization branch of NIS, localized and published the games in North America and Europe. They don't own the games themselves, however.

Would Disgaea or any other NIS-title sell on Steam? I really doubt it. Plus, there is probably risk involved since porting costs time and money too.

The port wouldn't nearly be as expensive compared to other hardware, as the PS4 runs on x86 architecture, so making a PC port would be a fairly straight forward affair, compared to say porting from Power PC derived Cell Broadband architecture to x86 PC instead.

I don't think he was being serious there personally. Reads like he is "jokingly" playing for sympathy sales in the face of launching against a much bigger title.

If N1 seriously had so much riding on Disgaea 5 alone there's no way they wouldn't also at least be releasing it on PS3 as well, where they know their established audience already is.

Disgaea is definitely one of those. You are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

And yeah the budget isn't high> But the games are great, I certainly wouldn't care otherwise on PC. Where people could probably mod in higher quality sprites. I know I would do it.

If they released a game on mobile they wouldn't have to worry about anything.
I'm not talking about moving to mobile-only, but it would definitely stop the ship from sinking.

I don't really play any of their games, but I know so many people who love the Disgaea franchise and I'm just so used to their name being attached to quirky stuff. It'd be sad to see them go.

Didn't they say the same thing about Disgaea 4? Their new tactic to sell more copies is pity, now? :P

I will buy when it comes west, anyway.

Go multiplatform and see more sales :P

Xbox/PlayStation/PC

...that would also make their games more expensive to develop, so they'd have to balance the cost with the benefit. Not sure if their games would sell that much on Xbox. PC? I could see it selling well, probably.

Look at all of the Final Fantasy being ported over to Steam.
I've been buying them just so they don't stop lol.

For example, I never thought I'd see the day Valkyria Chronicles released on Steam. There's also the Ys series and The Legend of Heroes series as well.

Digital distribution is also cheaper than physical. I think they would do rather well on Steam.

Disgaea probably sells 90% of its sales in JP so thats why PS3/4 was chose since thats where the audience is. Now I'm assuming PS4 was chosen instead of PS3 due to fears of franchise fatigue.

PC digital distribution sounds like a smart idea, so does sending an offer SCEJ's way. Disgaea's pretty close to the PS brand, really.

It's also possible that this is a "we wouldn't exist without out our fans' support!" sort of statement that's gotten misconstrued.

You could say the same for stuff like Agarest or Ys or The Legend of Heroes or Valkyrie Chronicles before they released, they all performed great there. In the end Steam is a platform that loves its RPGs and strategy games, and a platform that's very compatible with console-style game design (unlike mobile for instance). If there were a chance to expand that would probably be the path of least resistance.
