No Mafia III Review Copies Ahead of Launch

I'm hoping the game itself is good, regardless of the technical issues.
Holy shit that's hilarious.

If Mafia III tanks commercially (which it will more than likely will), then you have to wonder what 2K really has in its stable other than R* and Firaxis titles.

Hmm..its seems the issue is that targets are scripted to play out with the same scripted falling to knees after being shot animation every time they take a certain amount of damage so that you can get an interrogation scene.

Interrogation targets do 'suffer' from this script, yes. I've unloaded clips into them and they would simply fall to their knees.

I didn't mind though. I'm not exactly looking for total realism. If you are, this mechanic would be a turn off.

what if I don't like Angry Joe though

now we're back to square one

I honestly find them annoying, skimming through their reviews are fine as he makes good points. But general youtube or stream videos from them are bad.

Better to watch the non commentary video linked earlier.

The interrogation where there's tons of cops around, I almost stopped the video right there. Wtf? That's beyond stupid.

Mobs ran directly into their own grenade...

You can see through walls...

Driving looks awful...

They stated in an interview that they wanted there to be no fail states other than death so they can't let you kill the interrogation dude and have to restart the mission. They probably should have just did it though because that shit looks weird.

It seems like there has to be a more elegant way to deal with the player killing the target than that.

lol tbh that could make for some hilarious free roam 'chaos' videos ;p

sort of a la GTA V youtube videos of NPCs going crazy on highways, but instead a handful of the cars or NPCs some how remain immune while the others look like they were just hit by an asteroid lol

Not exactly realism but believability. Realistically a bunch of people wouldn't have the same exact reaction to being shot but it was probably a decision meant to save a little bit of the budget.

Yeah it looks like this still needed a few months to cook. Shit like customization not at launch is pretty telling.

Thinking of cancelling my pre-order for Tomb Raider instead.

Wait what? Character customisation isn't in the game from Day 1??? And here I was hoping to make my character really pull off the rags to riches theme with baller suits near the end of the game.

That guy not dying or even not falling over from a grenade was the last thing i even noticed in that gif. It seems to be intentional from all the other footage i've seen

But the way the people in the chair just slide backwards while in the seated position is just...lol

Not to mention the black guy that was on his knees just gets up and runs away. lol

People keep bringing up DOOM. Let me tell you something, this game is NOT DOOM. The situations are different enough to make me very concerned about MIII.

DOOM isnt really that ambitious anyway. It is just a refinement of the types of shooters we used to play in the 90s with a new engine. You cant necessarily fuck that up. It is literally a corridor shooter. but that was its strength. It advertised itself as "DOOM". Not "DOOM2016". It didnt try to reinvent the wheel. Doom is great because of this.

MAFIA III on the other hand, is a contemporary open world game. MAFIA has A LOT to LOSE. The game already had stiff competition via the latest GTA title among other open worlders. But it is also releasing around a time where other AAA open worlds are releasing (watchdogs 2).

DOOM didnt and doesnt have much competition either. So it would have always felt "fresh" after so many years of ADS military shooters.

Every time I watch it I discover something new.

I like how the plant in the background just randomly explodes after the fact.

Is this confirmed? If so: that's a shame.

EDIT: By the way. From what I've heard from our local PR people at 2K, there were no development issues whatsoever. Or at least, no one at 2K was worried about the release date and the PR cycle. They said the whole process went smoothly, unlike some other titles, because Hangar 13 is full of industry veterans. END OF EDIT

About 'jank' and the weird moments: to me that's part of the open world fun, as long as it's not game breaking or anything really bad. Blowing away am entire room with a grenade while the interrogation target simply falls to his knees, that's funny to me. If you're bothered by that, then Mafia 3 might not be for you.

About the driving: I had fun with it, felt great and simple at the regular mode. I had control and could do what I wanted, but there still was this feeling of heft to it. When switched to simulation mode, it became more difficult to control the car. Can't say whether it's realistic since I don't have a driver's license myself, but I felt the difference immediately.

All in all, I guess this game has a Shadow of Mordor-feel to it, to me. And for my taste that's a good thing because I think Shadow of Mordor was one of the best games of that year. I know a lot of people on GAF don't like that game so yeah, I think that's where the disinterest/dislike is coming from in some cases.

I hope this all helps in purchasing decisions for people here. I'm gonna stream (live review) the game as soon as we have the code. It'll be mostly in Dutch, but I always answer questions in English if an international viewer asks.

Telling about what? That they are adding feature post-release because community demand, even when it's feature they never intended to implement?

This.

Or you could... not... play it...

But then that means that you can't talk about the game in any intelligent sense whatsoever.

So if you decide not to play it, you can't actually say whether it's a bad game or not. Just because people say it's bad game doesn't make it so. And vice versa. I encourage people to play games, even if they don't review well. That is how you find hidden gems.

In a busy holiday season with lots of seemingly great games coming out, most people aren't going to try it to "see if it's a bad game or not."

PC Gameplay I think that this PC gameplay was already posted, but I did ask the poster what his specs were and he said that he played it at a 2K event, so no news on the PC version yet!

I have a feeling that the game was made for PC and ported to consoles. Optimistic about how well my new rig can run it!

Wow - I wish that this statement was accurate.

Stiff competition?

It's a single player 3rd person open world organized crime game.

R* released GTA V back in September of 2013. They haven't added any new single player content whatsoever. It's 3 years and waiting with pretty much zero hope of any new single player DLC.

Saints Row 4 came out in August of 2013. They had a few lackluster DLC releases after that. Other than that, there's nothing on the horizon.

EA released Godfather 2 (which was a huge disappointment) in 2009. This series is pretty much over.

You might be able to convince me that games like Assassin's Creed (which we probably won't see again until Holiday 2017) and the upcoming Watch Dogs are in the ballpark since they are single player third person open world games. But - they aren't organized crime games like Mafia III.

Honestly, the pressure really is off the developers of Mafia III. I would argue the complete opposite of what you claimed. There are no other AAA open world organized crime games on the horizon any time soon.

Now, if the next RDR is finally announced - maybe it's a different story (even this is a stretch, as RDR is clearly in the Western open world genre). But - that won't be here for ages....

I'm okay with jank, Sleeping Dogs was a pretty great game despite being janky as fuck, but I'm still not sure I'm on board with Mafia III yet.

Every time I watch a preview video I think "this looks pretty good, but I'm not sure what the gameplay hook is." Sleeping Dogs had stylish and brutal melee combat, Saint's Row had very bizarre weapons and side activities, Watch Dogs had the hacking angle, Assassin's Creed has climbing and stabby gloves, Batman has gliding and being fucking Batman, etc.

I'm not seeing a unique thing that Lincoln can do compared to any other open world protagonist. The setting is cool, but that's not enough for me to justify a day one purchase.

Gameplay looks good (apart from the AI) but it's all about the location, atmosphere and music, I want to explore that world and I really hope the game runs well and reviews well, if it does it'll be one of the rare times I fork over full price for a game.

I think it's less about Lincoln's skill set, but more about just telling this revenge story that takes place in 60's New Orleans where people like to look sideways at blacks. Lincoln itself is made to be this efficient, brutal and trained killer because of his military training, "perfect tool of revenge".

oh wow lol XD

i like the chairs too... the way they all shoot back looks like a cartoon where someone is getting hooked off the theatre stage with a cane lol ;p

could be fun in a SKATE sort of way hehe still looking forward the game as long as any bugs are funny

Definitely, and I love the idea of playing a racist-killing simulator with a fairly unique backdrop.

Still if the core of the game is brutal gunplay, then I'd expect things like dismemberment and realistic wounds. Lincoln is a Vietnam vet, and a key aspect of that war was the dehumanization of the enemy. With that in mind, I expect to be able to do some pretty heinous shit to the mobsters.

Bullet hits and melee attacks on mobster look quite brutal like they should. Headshot especially gives that splatter to walls and mobster just drops like doll with its strings cut. I doubt they allow you to cut them into pieces tho, for that stuff you need spin up Soldier of Fortune games.

Also I think dehumanization of the enemy is quite big part of any war. It makes killing other side easier when you are conditioned to see them as less than you, less than human. Something very bad and none human.

Okay? I didn't realise we were all under obligation to play everything to make sure we all had our own opinions

Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked also gives members 20% off ($12) with no expiration making the game $48 plus tax and if you pre-order, you get a $10 reward certificate two weeks later which makes the game basically $38 plus tax.
