The last Atlas thing I did was getting the lead to Nada and Polo but ever since I got the base I'm not entirely sure how to proceed. The mission system is hard to follow. Kept wanting me to build a shield booster instead of do anything else

Might check out the next system in the atlas path as I already visited it to steal away a scientist, maybe they're in that system?

Ooh. Try jumping one system along the galactic core path (per this guide), and they should hopefully be there waiting. You can then get back to the Atlas Path. Being able to open those canisters makes casual jumps a lot more enticing.

Does anybody know what to do if you reach the end of the Atlas Path without all 10 Atlas Stones? I didn't get to do what was offered to me...

edit: Just to be clear Nada and Polo are unrelated to (possibly even antagonists of) the Atlas, you don't need to have accepted the Atlas Path in the beginning to run into them.

I don't think Nada and Polo's ship and an Atlas Station can ever be in the same system, but I'm not sure about that.

Not annoying at all! I always find trading systems fascinating, and though NMS's system probably isn't as complex as I'd like it to be, it's still fun to try to figure out what's going on.

FWIW after their initial set of patches I didn't crash in dozens of hours of play. But the Foundation update changed a ton of things, including the entire universe, so I guess there's bugs to stomp again. I did crash the first time I teleported to my base, but it's been stable since then. You should definitely let the bug report get sent to them so they can fix it. If you're crashing on the same planet both times, there may be something screwy with the geometry there and best to find another planet to explore for now...

edit: adding on to what Hawkian said, as it's a "corrupt data" issue you may want to rebuild the database on the PS4.

Even at launch, outside of the ones during warp were pretty rare...

That error code seems to be "corrupt data" and isn't unique to NMS so I'm not 100% sure how to narrow it down. You've definitely installed the bug fix patch (1.12, I think) right? Defintiely do a full system power cycle too if you haven't yet. Next step is unfortunately to delete and reinstall NMS.

That error code seems to be "corrupt data" and isn't unique to NMS so I'm not 100% sure how to narrow it down. You've definitely installed the bug fix patch (1.12, I think) right? Can someone tell me if there are paradise planets in Survival mode?

Yes, they are there. However, it seems the vast majority of "pleasant" planets have very aggressive sentinels on Survival mode.

A word of advice to people starting on Survival. Avoid talking to NPCs at Trader stations until you get the Hyperdrive blueprint. The game glitches out and won't let you talk to the NPC who is supposed to give you the Hyperdrive blueprint if you already talked to him before. This is Game breaking and unfortunately happened to me. There is a slim chance an Operations Center will give you the hyperdrive blueprint but since those buildings are much less common in Survival mode, you will likely run out of chances to get the blueprint and be permanently stuck in your first system. I lost 10 hours of my game and had to restart. Sucks since I had stockpiled a bunch of plutonium, platinum and thamium9. :(

Of course there is also a small chance the game will send you to the same NPC for the antimatter and Hyperdrive blueprint. You are truly screwed if that happens even if you avoided talking to most NPCs. Hello Games really needs to fix this quickly. If your starter system has 4 or more planets, then the odds are slim that it's the same NPC for both antimatter and hyperdrive. Only 2 or 3 planets though and the odds jump significantly since buildings are much less frequent in this mode.
 
Really? That's awesome, gonna look out for some space station vantage points from now on.

Yeah it kinda blew me away

in Vanilla NMS I was never able to see a space station from a planet. So when I saw that little speck inbetween the planets, it took me a while to realize that was a space station and not a very far away moon

That's unfortunate. Proc gen and open world bugs are understandable, but quest bugs like that should be caught by QA before going out.

I know everyone's probably tired of me saying this, but if you haven't already, file a bug report with Hello. It's the best way of making sure they know about the issue.

Yeah I will let them know. It's also mentioned by some people on the Reddit Foundation/bug thread so it is happening to others. I know Hello Games checks out the Reddit page, so they are already likely aware of it.

I think it has to be within a cuboid room. I tried laying out hallway passages lined with storage containers and that was a mistake; now all my storage containers are accessed from outside my base. I've seen videos where people make cuboid rooms and can attach inward-facing storage containers, which I would do, except I'm halfway across the galaxy desperately trying to find the 14th species on a planet so I can move on and find an ocean ANYWHERE with fucking rigogen in it.
I figured it out.
You were right about vaults in cuboid rooms. That works just fine.
However, you can technically also place vaults down a hallway.
1. Create a hall perpendicular to the path where you actually want the vault interface.
2. Place the vault with the interface where you really want it.
3. Create hall along your original path. The vault access panel will now clip through the wall.

Not sure if I'm going to keep it that way or build a traditional vault.

When accessing my vault the ship model stretches beyond both edges of the screen. Favorite part is how many turrets litter its deck. Some random attackers came in and got lit up pretty hard.

Whoa. I mean I guess that has more to do with the small NMS atmosphere heights than the size of the freighter, but that's still impressive. I didn't know they got that close to planets.

But wait, pirates attack your own freighter? Does the ship go on red alert when you're inside? Can you lose cargo if they blow up containers?
 
I was just browsing the NMS subreddit and realized that freighters max out at 48 slots. I was assuming they were limited to 25 based on how the first slots are arranged. So then I started doing some math based on what people were reporting the cost was to upgrade from a 46-slot to 48-slot, and what I know the cost is for a 13-slot and 15-slot model. In order to max your freighter, jumping two slots at a time, you'll spend over 1.1 billion units. I managed to amass over 30 million units without really spending any time just farming resources for massive profit, but even under the best-case scenario right now (10 million units per hour farming/crafting lubricant), that's 110 hours of doing nothing but that mindless loop. And that's just so you can unlock an unreasonable amount of cargo space that will take you more hours to fill, especially if the cargo space in your ship is limited by being fully-stocked with weapons/shields/hyperdrive limiting how much you can carry to the freighter in a single trip. And of course that's assuming you've already maxed out cargo slots in your homebase since they're easier to access. It's an endless feedback loop that culminates in nothing. Which is kind of depressing, really.

And then I got to thinking, "hey, I don't give a fiddler's fuck about having a 48-slot freighter, I just want a kickass base which is way less resource intensive" and I started feeling OK about things again.

Yeah, the upgrade path for freighters doesn't make a lot of sense right now, as you can't mitigate some of the cost by breaking down your current upgrades. And no one needs that level of cargo space. So I can only assume or hope that this is part of the Foundation they're talking about for future content. Hiring NPC ships to create yourself a trading/combat fleet makes sense to me, and would necessitate that level of cargo space, but who knows what they have planned. It'd be cool if they'd at least give us some hints...

A little good update would be a hotkey for photo mode. Hello Games still underestimate the screenshot potential as complement for the lack of player interaction with other players and social media.

It's a bit of an oversight, isn't it? Hell, just expand the creator/recharge menu to have an option for it there. And, honestly guys, I get it, in Photo Mode I don't get alerts. Maybe that could be a 'Warn me once, then let me opt out of future warning' when I turn the mode on.

You can break down a base at any time and not lose any resources, so there's no harm in plopping a simple base down somewhere and getting the quests underway.

Correct. That's what the "previous base" inventory is for in a base that is not currently your own. Also you can break down your old base FROM your new base location without even having to travel to your old base. Just be aware that you will lose teleportation history to space stations.


Regarding the freighters and cost, yeah, my 15-slot freighter really currently holds more like 65 inventory because I've loaded it with all ten of my storage containers which hold 5 slots each.

To be honest, I'm already having problems holding all of the cargo I want it to hold (I'm a bit of a hoarder in RPGs and in games like this) but even so that's with holding several thousand units of plutonium and several hundred or 1000 units of elements that I may end up not ever using until I take the plunge and start changing starships from my current 26-slotter. Even so, with all the cargo space I currently have that reduces the need for me to even bother with switching out my currently starship for a new one anyway.

At least I guess nobody can complain about not having enough to work towards in this game now! :)


Oh and Nerfgun? I now have some ideas to add to my own planetary base now - thanks! Right now your base is my model for a badass looking pad.

Would be kind of cool in a future update if we could hang out in each other's bases?

Yeah right now I'm just doing quests and building enough storage to dump my random things collection into. Trying to mine several thousand iron at a time to actually fill out my base structure.

Still haven't found any Candensium yet. Does it show up on the planet scan list at all? Any particular star system color I should be visiting?

Edit: nm first jump and found a planet with some :)

One thing I did was to just build a bunch of useless stuff in my base as a cheap way of "storing" iron (and a few other elements). Then, when I want to come back and do more base building, I just discard the things I already built and bam, I have my elements back!

Doesn't work as well with the components that require items (like glass) but I have still found it to be helpful. Sorry if this was already super obvious to everyone else...

I bought a freighter first thing upon booting up the Foundation Update (a Star Destroyer model, naturally). I promised myself I wouldn't start a planetary base until I finally got to the center of the galaxy. And then I'd try to find somewhere perfect. Well, on my way to the center, I stumbled upon the perfect place. Mild climate, passive Sentinels. The base is on a gorgeous plateau of purple grass with a mountain behind it and an ocean in front of it. It's even the only planet in the system. Heck, upon entering the system, I literally stumbled upon this screenshot that accompanied the update, right down to the specific freighter model:


It was fate. I have made that planet my home.
 
That image they used on the Foundation page puzzles me. Why did they use an image of ships flying around with their landing gear extended? You would think they'd consider that a bug and not something to use for a marketing image...

Speaking of the Foundation page, there's one new ship feature in the changelog that still confuses me:
Holding brake whilst turning now activates drift for fast turns

Now, this is very similar to a suggestion I made to them a while back, and yet...there's no air brake on the ships right? I guess they mean holding the reverse thrusters? I've tried this several times, and I haven't been able to put the ship into any kind of drift / powerslide mode. All that happens is that my velocity quickly goes to 0.
 
I didn't realize how unvaried the freighter generation was until this update. I saw pics of freighters before but I always thought they came off as being more varied than that. Now I feel like I'm mainly seeing the same 3 in pictures.

I've been playing remote play on my Vita, and have been trying to swap L1/L2 and R1/R2 so that I can shoot and fly without having to touch the screen all the time. I swapped the buttons from the PS4 accessibility settings and have triple-checked that it's enabled, but the buttons stay the same in game. Anyone else run into this issue? I'm pretty sure I'm only experiencing it with NMS.

Started survival. After combing the land for 52 minutes I got enough zinc. Iron is left but that is easy.

My question is I can't seem to remember even while playing what resources I need to keep on my body for survival. I can't even remember right now, even though I played it 25 minutes ago.

What are they?

There are more than that, but many of them are kind of ugly. They're fixed models, not like the ships. I suppose it's easy enough to add more, if they choose. It doesn't bother me greatly but then I'm not close to getting one yet (Survival).

Played a bit of Normal again, first time in a while. It's just not as engaging for me as Survival any more. There are some balance issues (swimming ffs), but I think this is the game for me now. Land and sea vehicles would make the world of difference tbh. I really hope they're not far off.

What are they?

Thamium9 for life support. The most important by far, although you can use carbon and plutonium for power cells, plutonium is far too important for launching. Thamium is not usually hard to find by scanning, just make sure to horde it.

Titanium or zinc for shielding, if you have any.

Also, you will get atacked by pirates when you leave the atmosphere. So to avoid dying, hang out on the edge of the atmosphere until they appear, when they do dive back down into the atmosphere and they will leave you alone. Once they've gone you should have time to dash to the space station. There's always a gap of a couple of minutes or so between scans, so if you do this (also works at the space station) you may be able to get around without getting blown to bits. Also, if your ship is empty they only tend to attack one at a time, which is manageable, tough, but doable.

It's also good practice to empty your ship when flying, and on land only carry what you need in your suit. That way if you die you won't lose what you're carrying.

Personally I think you should still be able to retrieve your grave in survival. It doesn't make it much easier but it's a lot less tempting to save scum.

I've noticed that not only are there more creatures on planets, there seems to be considerably larger ones at that. The largest one I saw prior to the foundation update was around 6 metres but just this afternoon I found this monster. This particular planet was riddled with wildlife and at times the frame rate was actually dropping pretty hard because of it. At one stage there would have been 40 or so on screen at once with 4-5 of those big ones as well as about 15-20 of the centipede looking flying creatures getting around. The best part is there was a habitable base right beside the water's edge and there were no hazards apart from the occasional storm.

The picture is not that great as they seem to react to the player's location and they seem to always turn away from you. I wanted to get a shot with trees beside it so you get a sense of how bloody big this thing is. It took long enough to get this shot so I gave up!

Are you sure the freighter models are fixed? I assumed they were based on basic body types, but the detail parts were different on each one. Maybe not. I saw one last night that had a giant solar array looking thing on the side of it I'd never seen before. They really should make them procedural like the normal ships, if they aren't.

I still haven't tried Survival, but Normal is fine for me right now while I try to do all the base quests and save up enough credits for a freighter. The changes to resource density and increased dangers make it much more of a challenge than pre-Foundation NMS was.

Except for the crash I just had when landing... 😒

edit: this base teleporter is really useless without showing the custom names of systems. I guess they never named anything during testing..?

There's currently a texture flickering problem with SLI enabled. If it's that then the official solution is to disable TAA (until Nvidia releases a new profile for the game).

You can switch to other profiles that don't have the problem, which is what I did.

Greatly appreciated, c0Zm1c. I will try disabling TAA and report back how it goes!

Not wrong. I just warped 3 times now trying to find the right bloody system that I wanted... very frustrating. That and the already mentioned intro to each and every NPC trader taking at least half a dozen seconds each time you talk to them. So many little things that add up to a lot of wasted time. The game would be a much better experience without these little niggles.

Gave Survival mode a couple days and it's not for me, at least not in this state. While I love the fact you are no longer safe anywhere the plutonium/launch thrusters balancing is infuriating and the combat difficulty is absurdly high right from the start which completely destroys any risk taking.

Also Survival really needs to show the planet hazards upon space scan (thanks Launch Thrusters bullshit).

If you let go of the thrusters then yeah you will stop, but not if you're still holding them. The flaw in flying the ship is that the thruster and the fire buttons should be on the shoulder buttons. If they changed circle to L1, X to R1, L2 to circle and R2 to X, you'd be able to have greater control without moving from the sticks.

  • [PC] Following reports of some people experiencing issues with the game while unsupported mods are installed, we’ve added mod detection which will show a warning screen on loading when mods are detected. A mouse click or button press will dismiss this screen. We have also introduced a new method for mod installation which should prevent player’s games from breaking when a new update is released.   • [PC] Allowed remapping of the build menu and quick menu commands to support Azerty keyboards.
  • [PC] We’ve enabled a temporary workaround for the SLI issues people are experiencing. If you are running in SLI, please disable TAA and the game should run. We are looking into a more permanent solution to this issue.

  • [PC] Fix for monitor detection on PCs with 3rd party remote desktop or screen sharing applications.
  • [PC] Running the game via the .exe file should no longer give Steam Init errors.
  • Fixed an issue where underwater buildings could spawn without doors which in rare cases would mean the NPC missions could not be completed. (Note: If you are still being pointed to missing facilities during the NPC questlines, you can either claim a new base and re-build the NPC terminal, or if you have a Freighter, remove the NPC terminal from your base and rebuild it in the Freighter. The NPC should then give you new coordinates. We are still working on a more permanent fix for this issue).
This update is live on both PS4 and PC! If you continue to experience issues, be sure to let us know by submitting a bug report.

whats this about animals pooping. are you serious? what do they poop??

They poop coprite. The botanist in my base asks for it so we can grow some plants. Good fertiliser apparently!

Luckily on my planet there are herds of 20 - 50 animals so I can mass feed and collect tonnes of the poop (as long as the animals aren't in a cave)

Still wondering if the animals not pooping in caves is a bug. No big deal though.

My home planet is beautiful, but the extreme weather is really starting to become a nuisance when building outside. Constantly hearing "Thermal protection falling" is starting to wear me down....

I'll be honest, I didn't have any fun with this game at launch - even after the initial patches. Now though, since the Foundation update, I'm really hooked.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

As far as I understand it, yes. The one thing I haven't tested is breaking down storage containers but I will try and test that next time I play. As a test I'm going to only leave a small amount of some crappy and easy to obtain resource (like iron) in the storage container, destroy the container, and then rebuild it in place. If it works then I'm going to destroy it again, move from my freighter (where I currently have all of my storage containers) and rebuild it back at my planetary base.

I just want to give myself options in case I run into that freighter again that looks almost like a super star destroyer so I may temporarily relocate all of my storage containers to my planetary base if I'm worried about the storage container contents not carrying over from freighter to freighter.

Yes, they are there. However, it seems the vast majority of "pleasant" planets have very aggressive sentinels on Survival mode.

Thanks, that's what I was worried about. I'm not sure I want to continue with Survival mode then. For me, the whole point in battling on is to find a nice home planet. Without reward -- and I don't consider building a base a reward -- I see no real motivation.
