I've seen 3 people playing this game already, and this happened to all of them. Very annoying bug it seems.

Are you sure it's not related to dipping in and out of the atmosphere? The "time to arrive" changes if you drop into atmo because the faster drive doesn't work there.

It looks like the timer reacts to the button press. So when you're going fast and suddenly lift the buttons it instantly switches arrival time.

Why does the time to reach a beacon increase randomly even when you're going at seemingly full speed?

Maybe he wasn't going perfectly straight. It looked like it was jumping between 15, 16, 17 minutes. If it's that far away the smallest thing could alter the time pretty huge.

There's a speed limit in atmoshphere. Also maybe he wasn't pressing the accelerator fully?

Or it could be bug!

People have speculated the the center of the galaxy will lead to a new galaxy and another, and another, and eventually that will lead to the center of the universe. There's not really evidence to back that up though.

People have speculated the the center of the galaxy will lead to a new galaxy, and eventually that will lead to the center of the universe. There's not really evidence to back that up though.

That's not speculation, that was the one thing that was confirmed.

Could be because he's flying away from it briefly, from time to time? Like he's flying faster than 'relative time' on the planet's surface away from the object so "time to arrive" might spike up. Not sure of the context, though, could be totally wrong.

What happens at the center of the starting galaxy is what the guy didn't want to spoil. We do know that you can go to another galaxy after, but not exactly what transpires or how it works.

We don't know shit about the center of the "universe".
