No Man's Sky Spoiler Thread

So I told myself I'd stop speculating so much, but I think I am slowly getting a grip on how upgrading works, which will I think really help me out when I start - I would have waffled for quite a while otherwise.

Like one thing, it's useful having empty slots in your ship and armor, but -useless- having empty slots in your multi-tool.

Also, SOMETIMES, when you chain upgrades, you'll see the name for the upgrade is like "Blaster V1" and on it's avatar you'll see "+1 (someIcon)" - but when you craft it adjacent to something that gives it a bonus (indicated by outline) it'll instead say +2. If you see in BigTiggles stream, his scanner boost in the bottom right corner is an example of that. I don't know why it doesn't always happen, or what the rules under the hood are, but it's something that even till now a lot of streamers are still experimenting with and don't fully understand. Which is exciting to me!

There is -some- sense, like this -70 planet is a tundra, a temperate climate is greener and has no frost. The variation is there, it just doesn't align with earthly expectations, which I think is intentional, A planet that is +60 but still lush is possible, where on earth it would be hell - it's just the plants and animals that have 'evolved on that planet' have found a good mechanism for dealing with that kind of heat. But generally when things get higher (-90 for example during the day) It's snowy as fuck.

I think there's some impact. I can't recall seeing liquid water on a frozen world for instance. Heat drops underground etc.

But I don't know if it's just cognitive dissonance between what you see and what you expect. I mean Mars looks like a desert for instance but is extremely cold. Not every cold planet will be an ice world.

The -70 I'm seeing on that last stream linked is right out of British Columbia, but with more cliffs. Trees, grass, animals everywhere.

If we were talking about lifeless planets, I'd be willing to accept most any temperature. But we keep seeing these planets with absurd temperature ranges teeming with the same sort of large flora/fauna you'd see on Earth. Mars is a cold and barren desert, but it also has a thin atmosphere and if there's anything still alive on it it's at a microscopic level. When they show planets with -200C temps (as I recall seeing once) that have as much plant and animal life as something like Earth, to me that says the temperature stuff doesn't really mean all that much. You can only stretch "It's totally alien so it could be like anything!" so far.

I suppose it's pretty weird that this is the thing that's bugged me the most, but that big gauge is sitting in front of your face and just screams 'THIS IS MOSTLY COSMETIC' to me.

Part of me thinks they should've used a completely made up periodic table, and not used normal temperature measurements. It would've made it easier for people to swallow the concept of "this is not our universe, shit works however it works".

I'm feeling like that too. Part of why the temperature stuff nags at me is just I'm too aware of real life physics and biology to suspend my disbelief that easily. I imagine most people are able to get over that easier than me...

Not same as having deep understanding / knowledge about that stuff, but as person living in country where winters are long, dark, cold and nature is "dead" it does fuck with my mind to see e.g. -30C planet with scenery like from +30C summer day in NMS. Hard to suspend my disbelief at that point when witnessed so many Earth winters :b

I know what you mean though. I mean there's plenty of made up stuff in the game, it's clearly a fantasy universe. But then the Celsius thing pulls you back into the real world a little.

To be honest a lot of the planet scanning seems pretty odd. "Flora: not detected" - plants everywhere.
 
I think someone should make a FAQ with all the information presented. If the game isn't telling people enough info, it'd be nice to curve a little repeated discussion by having one at the ready, ya know?

(Not that I approve of such methods in game design, but you work with what you've got)


Now to answer the ultimate question.

Digital or physical?

On one hand, I won't have to leave my house. On the other hand, I sorta miss journeying to a video game store to pick up a copy of a game.
 
For me, even when I'm done with the initial hard core playing of the game, I can see it being something I dip back into from time to time. So having the digital version right there on the PS4 seems to make sense. Especially as it's only 6gb.
 
Regarding the preorder ship, the Alpha Vector, its description is:

It’s upgraded with lasers for protection and a hyperdrive that allows you to jump to the nearest solar systems right from the very beginning.

I wouldn't mind using the ship because of its different appearance from the starter ship, but does that description imply that you won't need to repair it when you begin the game?

I'd much prefer to need to repair it as well.

Yeah you won't need to repair it. I'd rather play the game as intended. I assume that's an option?
 
My feelings about the game have been a rollercoaster since the leaks started. Im very glad I saw what I saw which initially made me very disappointed and convinced me I would skip the game, yet after I accepted it for what it is (or at least what we believe it to be) and seeing some actual cool things happen, I'm coming back around and am more interested in playing it than before the leaks started.

I may not cancel my pre-order afterall.

If you are on PC and ship comes as DLC then you can just uninstall it, Steam allows you to remove individual DLC's.

I was 100% non-believer before leaks. Now I'm on board NMS train with copy pre-ordered from Steam.

I'm not a physicist or chemistry master or anything, but could there be a change that gravity or atmosphere composition affect this?

Same. I've went from "who cares" to "neat" to "oh that sucks" to "tempered expectations of a possibly fun game if they can fix the goddamn crashes".

But really, I'm glad I was able to sap away some semblance of what this game is before the hype washed over me, because I can't imagine picking this up and being as upset as I feel some people are gonna be.

Do we know anything more about the online aspect yet?

Is there still the tiniest possibility that you can encounter other players?

To that effect, is every player on the same 'server' or the same world?

I was thinking I might get a little classy with it and start naming planets after famous philosophers and artists, with some fart joke planets sprinkled in there too.
 
The names of my planets will all depend on what they look like. Although I would like to be the first one to name a planet Tatooine or Klendathu.
