No more special sauce for Xbox console going Into helix

They kicked out Phil, where would the special sauce come from? They kept the Booty but lost the glaze.

Seriously though, Asha was brought on to push Co-Pilot for gaming. Anyone thinking the 360 days are coming back is delusional.

Doesn't matter. Once Xbox One takes full advantage of DX12 it's going to be more powerful than an RTX5090.
2014 GAF told me so!

so like the Series X and PS5? this isn't new...
there's no secret sauce when every API is based around the Direct X feature set, because the GPUs are literally designed around Direct X and then put into a console, and all you essentially get inside a console is a PC part that has been stripped down somewhat
Customizations for series X:

Velocity Architecture:

- ssd/direct storage
- decompression block
- sampler feedback streaming.

All custom for MS from my understanding?

these are basically obsolete now tho. it was a slight modification to speed up data transfer and to take load off of the CPU. sampler feedback streaming was also never used in anything so far afaik.

I'll just wait for the dev kits . . . i mean tools . . . or next year's e3 . . . or acquisition to be final . . . or DX12 . . .

Surface had a run at a point.
It most certainly did. I remember for a while it being a really nice (mostly) piece of hardware. Was an above average success. Something to build on, cultivate, mature, buff, polish.....

Then Microsoft kinda just let it poop it's pants and it's just kind of a thing.

I have one for work. I really like it.

That's the MS MO. Same can be said for Mixer, Zune and Windows phone. They come out of the gate strong, but do about zero support or cultivating and end up dropping it.

yes... it absolutely is. the only exception is the PS5 Pro

No the PS5 had custom things added too.

- Kraken Decompressor Hardware
- Custom I/O Stack
- Oodle Kraken + Oodle Texture work
- Added a Geometry Engine
- Tempest 3D Audio

people forgot it because it was insane overkill and barely accomplished anything that the comparatively slow SSD inside the Series X, with no secret sauce couldn't do as well, with only slight differences.

if your storage solution is 50% faster, but the time frame you're talking about is 2 seconds... then... like... wow, now it will take 3 seconds to load instead! the horror!
and in games "designed around it" you get a 2 frame stutter by running them on an ordinary SSD! SCANDALOUS! 🤣
Lol... I recall saying the very thing in the PS speculation thread. The leap in SSD speeds is so vast that we literally will be talking about 1 second vs 2 seconds, and yet that would be one being 100% faster.

Ah well, SSD and IO complex was still "special sauce" though.
I wonder what it will be called?

PC Series X?
PC 360?
PC One?

Who Knows Idk GIF
Xbox Series 361.

Your claim is they were the same. Reality indicates that there are differences. Whether you care or not.

Oodle is software. There are others custom silicon units on PS5, some of them inherited from PS4 Pro. Zen 2 CPU is also very customized and unique.

And according to Cerny the biggest customizations are for PS4 BC. Overall PS5 is highly customized by Sony.

The customisations did lead to closing the gap between PS5 and XSX. The Road To PS5 video confused many here thinking it was underpowered. Smart Shift for example copped a lot of flack initially.

I'm fine with that. If it's a pre-built pc, it doesn't need any gimmicks, everything is already on the table.

A hefty chip, RT/60fps, a decent scaling solution, and we're good to go.

There's a difference between input "gimmicks" and customized hardware. A rather large difference, in fact. This isn't just a removal of some useless spec, but slapping a pre-built PC together, throwing some Xbox logos on it, and serving the plate. If it works out, great (especially for people like me who will only be interested in it for the backwards compat implications), but otherwise, it is hardly exciting in the console space.

So it's just a pre built PC with the Xbox dashboard and BC chip?
Hardware-wise, it's a prebuilt that is magically 33% less energy hog, 50% of the cost, while being about 33% of the overall volume.

BTW, console "special sauces" for GPUs are taking features OUT to reduce die space...

Ironically, today's PCs have more secret sauce than today's consoles...
Eeeeeh..... not really. Unless you're talking pre-built, and even then, there's no secret to it. Nothing is customized. They are shelf parts and easily to replicate. You couldn't build a PS5 Pro, however.

it did close the gap, but it's not something future consoles realistically need anymore.

I feel like we will see less and less modifications to the base AMD hardware going forward from both manufacturers.

it's not like it negatively affected Nintendo to go with essentially purely stock Nvidia hardware either for their last 2 systems.

It's not that i disagree with your opinion, i don't see it as a typical gaming console either, but if they don't have any ideas for one, let them make a PC with their sticker on it instead.

if it's reasonable priced compared to other pre-built gaming PCs it might be an interesting offer, and if not, then whatever.
