No Split Screen in Titanfall

I love the way Halo does things.

They allow for LAN hookups. They allow for 4 player offline splitscreen. Then they allow for 2 player splitscreen to go online, but they just put them into a separate playlist that allows such things.

PS: Mario Kart Splitscreen is better than Mario Kart online any day of the week.
Same with smash brothers. I have no faith in online system for new smash bros.

I agree though halo has best local multiplayer functionality. Hell, you can play campaign co-op as well.

The idea of two people playing an online multiplayer game together whilst being in the same house together makes me feel kinda sad. It's like texting someone who's sat on the same sofa as you.

:(

I thought shit would change this gen in this regard. Nice knowing that was just wishful thinking, at least for now. Even CoD only supports two players on a console now. Shit's fucked.
no local play for multiplayer title; cool brah, sign of the times, whatevs, who doesn't play games online anyways, certainly not a vast majority, would have been nice tho
no online play for multiplayer title; wtf is this indefensible shit
console gaming and console gamers alike these days are fucking strange

It's more like sitting next to someone watching a Netflix movie as opposed to watching the same Netflix movie in your respective homes while skyping

Split-screen is great for novelty factor, which is really the basis of good local multiplayer games. Goldeneye still has one of the best multiplayer experiences assuming everyone playing are around the same skill level.

For games like Titanfall, I can't imagine it being fun at all. Goldeneye had tons of bad game design that ended up working somehow.
Titanfall has AI baked into the game so 1v1 matches aren't empty. It would be perfect for split screen.

Any other PC gamers take a certain glee in seeing console gamers complain about losing niche features that very few people care about?

Welcome to our world.

This is wrong. Why do you think halo and call of duty was able to grab such a foothold with dude bros? And red necks? Because they all had 360s with live ready to go day 1? Or maybe they played it at a friends house/dorm split screen?!!

You guys act like we want to play split screen all the time and that's it.

This is great then! I don't have to listen to racist rants if the dudebros and rednecks that don't buy it.

What's wrong with that? I play with my 5 year old nephew a whole lot when he wants to play PS3 with me. When we play Call of Duty, he's not old enough to play correctly. He goes 0/16, 1/17, etc. regularly, but he's always player two so he doesn't impact my K/D.

For the features in this game, or rather the lack of them, I'm not sure if I'd be willing to pay full price for it. It's slipping into the "wait until it's on sale" category for me.

Wow, that is a horrible analogy. It is nothing like that at all.

The people that are complaining never play any single players game because they don't have split screen? You guys missed out on alot of great game with this logic. Zelda,Metroid,Metal Gear Solid split screen no where to be found. How many PC games have split screens? When your friends come over play a game you can play together and when they leave play Titanfall.

I'm pretty sure no one is saying that.

As a person who goes to college, I have no idea what nonsense you are talking about.

Or as a person who plays Halo online. It was pretty routine running into parties of people playing local split screen with 2-4 players. Personally I just about always also played online with my wife. Beer, split screen and a warthog = fun times.

That's a really dumb analogy. I want you to think about it for a couple minutes and see if you can figure out why.

If you're sitting beside each other, can see each other's screens, and can talk directly to each other (rather than through a headset), it's identical to local multiplayer, except you each have your own full screen.

I want the feature on PC too. It's just way easier to work around the limitation on the PC. Especially if there's LAN support.

And stop.

The point is Titanfall's gameplay ideology puts such a heavy focus on competitive play and playing co-operatively in a team that they don't even have a single-player mode means that local mutiplayer should be even more of a vital feature. Especially when it was a feature in the developers last game.

If Respawn wanted to make splitscreen happen they could make it happen. Whether that means reducing the framerate to 30fps, having it run at 720p, turning off anti-aliasing or switching the texture detail to 50% or all of the above they could make it happen.

Or it's like going to watch a movie together with someone, or going to the mall or a restaurant with them - you're socializing and enjoying an activity together.

Anyhows, was recently playing some Splinter Cell Blacklist and Rainbow 6 Vegas split screen with a buddy. Now that I think of it, I think all of the Tom Clancy games have split screen, which is great.

Halo online with groups of friends local or not, is best halo.

It kind of sucks games are doing away with split screen, 4 player split screen with my cousins was awesome on Halo: Reach, even though we all sucked.

What's actaully preventing them from implementing splitscreen? I mean you're still drawing the same amount of pixels to the screen. The actual calculations needed for each player that isnt graphics related cant be that much, can it?

not surprising, but terribly disappointing. Equally disappointing are the people saying it doesn't matter or that this is a good thing.

I bought Diablo 3 practically solely because it had couch co-op. The more games with splitscreen or local co-op the better.

I hate split screen with a passion. Even on a large tv the picture is just ruined in split screen. This does suck for the people who enjoy split screen though.

This is seeming like one barebones-ass game. Seems more like an Early Access kickstarter thing than a fully fledged retail product going for $60.

Probably will give the PC version a shake, but hope its priced aggressively. Oh, and I guess it'll be Origin?

I would guess they decided the manpower and time it would take to implement didn't make business sense. I can't imagine there were technical reasons that could not have been overcome.

It's just kinda sad if in order for two people to play a videogame together they either choose to or have no choice but to sit in separate rooms with a wall between them, whilst playing each other together.

I feel sorry for the kids of the future if this is a typical conversation: "Hey brother do you want to play some Mario Kart together? Okay you go to your bedroom and I'll go to my bedroom and we will connect to the internet and play together!"

That's fun for sure but nothing beats actually being with someone whilst playing them.

If no splitscreen is the future it's pretty depressing. We're living in an age of powerful consoles, 1080p, 60-inch screens and 60fps. There's been no better time for splitscreen.

Splitscreen is a peasant feature, so I don't care. But PC games have all but lost LAN functionality. That is a very sad fact. And I doubt any big multiplayer game by a publisher will have LAN again.

Sorry to break it to you but kids don't even talk on the phone anymore they text.

Yeah, it's almost certainly just a cost/benefit thing. While actually implementing it is probably fairly doable, it's also probably not trivial. And, it's another thing to test and support regardless, so the costs add up.

Honestly, I kind of like that Respawn has the balls to make the game so bare-bones. Not because I take any pleasure in people losing options they care about, or don't like getting more for my money -- but because it runs counter to the consumer expectation that a game needs everything and the kitchen sink included to be worth $60. I think that expectation only hurts mid-budget games that can't afford to do everything without compromises, and those are some of my favourite games.

This is the most bare bones game I have ever seen for 60 dollars. A buddy and I play split screen COD online all the time. Its fun having a person over drinking beer playing some games.

This is a big deal to me. I always play with friends locally, it's less about us all owning the systems and more about the convenience of us all being able to get together and play on one screen. We have a lot of fun with this. This has really made me not want to get this game anymore.

Nah man, plenty of people want split screen online. In Halo, there are always people playing split screen on guest accounts.

There are always people on CoD using split screen, a few years ago a big point for us playing any game was if we could play it together quick and easy like Halo and CoD do.

These days though this sort of news doesn't bother me, disappointing for some I don't doubt, but now my friends and I all like having our own consoles and TVs when gaming together.

I am a huge split-screen apologist, but expecting a multiplayer-only game like titanfall to have it, would be too optimistic. I am not the least bit surprised by these news.

Well as mentioned (I think?), Warhawk did it, with a lot more players too. You could do any combo of local split screen and online as well.

I actually did use that mode a few times and it was really great to have.
