• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

No you can't have my TF2 Max hat.

Also, I don't understand wanting to own a collectible for a game you don't give a shit about.

It's like "Oh yeah I own this sweet collectible, but it's in another dimension that I don't have access to. You want it for my dimensional currency? Fuck no."

i'm not angling for offers on it guys :P

i get a sales pitch about once a week. am i really the meanest person in the world not to sell it or gift it?
lolno...if you like YOUR hat that YOU paid for....keep it.

I cant imagine how many offers you get....i was getting at least 1 a day for a shitty mann co hat and ppl got all sorts of offended when i say no.

I only have the earbuds. I assume they're not that rare.

they a base value trade item.....last time i looked (maybe a week) about 28$

Just fyi, there's a program that scans for rare hats on tf2 servers that looks for low playtimes. So these guys contacting you aren't desperate, they're savvy and scummy traders trying to find the newb that doesn't know the value of rare items and rip you off.

Generally you would either trade the hat for the dollar value in steam games, or trade it for paypal cash via a middleman. However I would highly highly discourage the latter as I have heard countless stories of paypal chargebacks and fradulent middlemen.

What's the most expensive item so far?

Several months ago, I had someone message me through Steam with the same proposal for my Max hat. Used the same arguments, too (you don't play TF2, etc.). I had to give him the same "I'm a Sam & Max nerd") defense.

Not too long ago, he contacted me again to see if he could get me to crack. He offered to buy me a game that I would never play due to my already lengthy backlog.

I wonder if it was the same guy.

probably not. i get probably an offer or two a week. i've had two just today though, hence me making this thread.

I've gotten a lot of people who want my Last breath and atleast one guy who kept begging me to give it to him.

I'm not giving away my favorite item on TF2 away that I used my hard earned money on dammit!

I always get a bunch of people asking for my Bill's hat from L4D.

I never trade it. I don't play TF2 that much either.

Thanks for making this thread.

You know there is a TF2 community thread right?

Edit: Also you know there is a thing called livejournal correct?

i'm sorry. i'm sorry i started my 19th thread ever in my 5 and a half years here on neogaf.

i have the Bill hat too. never been offered much for it. it's only able to get by trade now as i understand, but there's a lot more of them out there.

would making your backpack private help? (not sure if the hat will still show in the backpack searches, but doubt it)
i'm not sure either. i don't really mind getting the offers though. it just amazes me how many times you have to say 'no' to these people.

The highest sale I can think of is when some guy got an Unusual Team Captain with a flame effect from a crate. It was a new highly sought after hat at the time (looks good, matches the art style, video game reference, multiclass), and Flames is one of most valuable unusual effects to collectors.

It sold in a private sale for something like $1,500.

I'm always constantly shocked at what has value in the digital world.

I had a co-worker tell me the other day that he has been getting crazy offers for his Steam account because it had a low ID number (He created it back in 2003).

People are always asking me for my two unusuals.

They never offer anything good for them.

Holy crap!

Wow, didn't realise this was so serious.

Is there an official way to trade items for cash (maybe into Steam Wallet or something)?

Always get trade requests for this thing. As soon as I get them I'm all "I WILL NEVER PART WITH MY MAX HEAD!"

I've made many grown man cry. :(

And that's why you always ask the buyer to send the money as a gift so they can't do that.

what counts as low? mine's less than 125000.

HI FIVE! see, that's why i started this thread. to find kindred spirits.

I feel like the only reason you made this post was because you know how irrational you're being.

So...congratulations on your foolishness?

i started it to swap stories about the desperate trade requests people get for TF2 hats. i'm enjoying the thread so far.

How do people find you as someone who owns a hat they want?

There is a hat search website where you can look for specific hats and it also tells you the steam account of the owner of said hat.
Most people doing this are Russians, at least in my experience, they are called "sharks", they look at your tf2 backpack for valuable hats, they also look at the hours you have put into the game and if you don't play the game much they assume you don't know the value of hats ( yes there is a hat economy and hat prices varies depending on the hat and other equations), after these "sharks" locate a potential victim they offer a lower price or a game that also is not even close to what the hat really goes for.
Moral of the story, even if you don't play TF2, check your backpack and if you have hats, know the prices of your hats, you
Might have something valuable that you didn't know of, for assistance you can always head to the official TF2 thread, bunch gaffers would be glad to help before any of you get scammed

You can't have my Bill's hat either you damn Russians.

Someone with broken english adds me at least once a month for that stupid thing, I don't play, but I'm not giving it away. It used to happen more frequently, like twice a week.

Primarily because my url name on steam is just Max, I presume they're searching for the Max hat and find I've only got Bill's

Yeah I had to set my profile and backpack to private because people kept adding me to ask if I wanted to sell my max and earbuds. Some guy offered 100$ but I seriously couldn't give a shit.

You aren't going to use it, and if anyone isn't going to use my Max hat, it's me. If you were a Sam and Max fan, you'd have one.
That's pretty presumptuous. If I were to get a Max head it would be for the sole purpose of actually wearing it, because I think it's a great hat. Also, I am a Sam & Max fan, I just wasn't playing TF2 (or much of anything on PC) at the time it was released. I also didn't know about the promotion until after the fact.

That said, I'd never pay more than like $10 for any in-game item, even Max's Head.

the two today fit that description for sure. some people are pretty polite, make their offer and then move on. the girl who was trying to flirt with me was definately an English native speaker though.

OP, I feel your pain. I played TF2 a lot over the summer and I was inundated with trade requests for either my Max hat or Apple earbuds.

I'm still being "stalked" by one trader who constantly sends me Steam friend requests even after I deny the previous requests.

WAIT, YOU CAN GET STEAM CODES IF YOU BUY YOUR GAMES DIRECT FROM TELLTALE???

I've been buying all the seasons since Sam & Max S1 through them to support the guys, but I'd love to have them on steam since I play them through steam shortcuts anyhow. Is there really a way to get steam codes? Or are you just talking about the pre-order hat?
