Outside of a few console releases, ever since I've been gaming (about 36 years), pretty much every console/handheld launch line up I've experienced has been lack luster. The only consoles (mainstream) I cannot speak for through experience is the Saturn and the Xbox One. With that said, I am not surprised as the launch line up. As a matter of fact, I was expecting a rather by the book launch line up. A big title or two, and a bunch of filler that will capture the interest of the smallest of niches.
As for the software issues going forward with the switch, I think it's pretty much impossible to have a repeat of the Wii U as far as software goes (or lack thereof). Unifying software teams will almost be like taking the handheld and console libraries of the past and combine them (in their respective generations of course). If all of the stuff going around about how Nintendo is streamlining/unifying their teams...it would be easy to conclude that their software output would at least match that of the 3DS, maybe a little more as their console developers are under one roof as well. So IMO, software will not be the issue long term.
Gamers are just more about games, they are about utility and fuctionality. If you ask me, people are more about the latter than the former nowadays when it comes to purchasing a video game console. It's also my opinion that this is what Nintendo really needs to really fix. People aren't satisfied with just a gaming experience, they want a media box that plays the popular mediums...while maintaining a high level of power all in a 200-300 dollar price tag. It sounds like milking blood from a turnip...pretty much impossible. But that's where the industry is at this point, and Nintendo seemingly still doesn't quite get it.
I think people here are overreacting in this thread. Every console released has had issues from software, to hardware, and a combination of both. It's up to the company to see if they have what it takes to react appropriately. To see if Nintendo truly learned from the Wii U or not...if the Switch does indeed flop out of the gate, how will they react this time? We know how they reacted with the Wii U....not at all.
