-- The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Kim Jong Un deepened Friday after the North Korean leader appeared to have missed a ceremony to pay tribute to his late father and grandfather on what is an important national anniversary.
Kim's name was absent from the list of attendees at the Kamsusuan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang on the 69th anniversary of the Workers' Party of North Korea, issued by state news agency KCNA on Friday.

The Workers' Party, founded in 1945, is North Korea's political party and is considered one of the country's most crucial institutions alongside the military.
According to KCNA, flowers were presented at the shrine in Kim's name, but the most senior official to attend was Hwang Pyong So, North Korea's second most important leader, who recently attended the closing ceremony of the 17th Asian Games in South Korea.

Kim hasn't been seen in public since he reportedly attended a concert with his wife on September 3. It's his longest absence from official events since he made his first public appearance in 2010, NK News said.
Analysts are puzzled and speculation is running rampant about why Kim has been out of the public eye.

Sick or deposed? Where's Kim Jong Un? Is Kim Jong Un still ruling in N. Korea? Why is Kim Jong Un so camera shy? North Korean leaders visit South Korea N. Korean officials make surprise visit

I want to say a struggle for power is going on.

But I can't help but think he finally found the place his father kept the naked girls as furniture.

Yeah there is a deffo power struggle going on. Some idiots atruing to flex their muscles in shelling the south again.

Might take years before we get a true picture of who is actually in charge.

Could he have been imprisoned or killed?

Nope, because then his sister and older brother would have also been killed if it was a coup. His sister is currently running the country and he the US and SK pretty much know that he is receiving treatment in hospital.

And any military coup would have likely been run through China, because they don't want anything upsetting the geopolitical situation there.

Also most of these articles come from the West who try and make it seem worse than it actually is. The reality in Korea and the reality of korea in the west are two different things.

That's just as much a rumor as anything else. Besides, his sister might want to take the reign for herself permanently.

Considering there have been open shootouts in NK last year, I don't think any coup needs to come form the outside.

Any potential coup would need the support of China. NK is an important strategic country for them. They are not going to risk having someone come in who will upset the balance and risk either becoming more open or becoming more aggressive military,

I read that he has gout, in his last televised appearance he looked overweight and was limping heavily.

I don't think China cares all that much about North Korea opening up, these days. NK is more of a trade hindrance than a "strategic country".

I'm going to guess we won't be seeing him again.
The fact that talks between the North and South have recommenced would support this perhaps.

They don't want the millions of refugee that would pour over the border in the event of a total breakdown in North Korea

China would view opening up as a potential for reunification, which would lead to the very real threat of American bases on the border with China. China do not want that.

Plus what operon said

I've always assumed any theoretical reunification agreement would include China, and the removal of US troops would be part of that agreement.

I believe that is how eventually it will play out. China and US will have to work something out. But a hardline regime could provoke the US and SK to act and China would not want that.

Also, i haven't read the specifics but apparently there will be a UN motion to charge KJU with war crimes. Will be interesting to see if China veto it or if any potential military action will take place to remove him and the regime.

Is it possible that there could be a coup in NK? or no?

Highly unlikely. Pyongyang was on lockdown before the delegates came to Seoul. It would be highly unlikely that the defacto number 2 would leave NK in the middle of a coup. KJU also purged those who were deemed a threat and consolidated his power.

NK has made quite a few strange and unusual moves these past few days; with North Korea taking questions at the UN and admitting to the fact they operate labor camps, high-level talks with South Korea and agreeing to EU human rights talks.

Either Kim Jong-un is orchestrating some kind of strange strategy change, or he's been deposed of.

North Korea is so closed off from the rest of the world, but I wonder if the protests in China somehow influenced the North Korean government to create change in their own nation? That limp Jong Un was walking with looked nasty too.

But they have also acknowledged that KJU is still is still their leader, have been provocative in SK waters, have criticised Park Geun Hye, and only today fired shells into SK.

He's probably just finishing up the last bits of food the country has somewhere. I mean why save it for later when you could just eat it all now?

Hope he's dead. Sounds cruel, but yea. Dead.

Edit: Oh, sorry. Errrrrrm. He's cheddar off dead? Nah, that was stupid. Hope his absence is "parm"anent?

I'll see myself out.
