Notorious joke characters of GAF past

Drinky Crow made the most sense during the transition from the Gamecube > DS era. Nintendo's fortunes were so low during the Cube, that most vocal Nintendo-only fans were deep-in-denial manbabies... When their fortunes started to reverse with the DS and they started parroting back Nintendo's mission of "blue ocean" "non-games" constantly, GAF needed someone to take the wind out of their sales. Drinky filled that role perfectly. He also gave a voice to the growing number of "hardcore gamers" (then a newly created class), who saw non-games/new controls as a joke (or a threat).

Since DS/Wii domination... trolling Nintendo fans is no longer quite as funny since they're back in the mainstream again. Drinky is not quite the sensation he once was.

Same with Gahiggidy. Nintendo's outrageous success this gen has de-fanged him and his schtick just doesn't fly these days. Insane fanboys don't seem nearly as pathetic when their voices are just another component of the deafening roar of orthodoxy.

Which is why Drinky Crow moved on to trolling Sony fanboys.

I only started posting again in the OT again recently, so I don't know if he's still up to his old shenanigans. And I've seen him out of character lately.

Yup. But Sony fanboyism has never been quite as funny... the PlayStation brand is not as old, it didn't dominate a whole generation of children (leaving many who might never have grown out of it), and their company actions are not nearly as WTF as "connectivity" and purple lunchboxes... Maybe PS3 had a little early failure, but it's basically the same business model as an Xbox 360, and its failure has certainly eased with time...

Exception: Square Enix betrayalton at E3 2008.

He may have been a joke character, but he was still scouring and scamming his way around in order to get as many deals on things as he could all the while being unemployed and living with his parents. :/

Maybe.. but I'll say that was so niche that I never really noticed it. Also Killzone 2 is basically just Sony's answer to Halo... how evangelical can you really get about something that isn't ultra-unique anyway? (I'm sure I'd be surprised :P)

While with Nintendo, you'll have people who swallowed the kool-aid 20 years ago and were completely out of touch (at least 2001-2004). Those who had never even dabbled in Sony or Sega were a sad bunch at that point. I would often hear things like "Only Nintendo is real gaming LOVE... because they care about FUN" and it would make you want to puke.

Dedication Through Light and his lol's and weirdly innocent/naive opinions. At first I thought he was incredibly annoying, but then I realized getting mad at people online was kind of dumb and saw the whole joke of the thing. Joke poster or not, the man knew how to enjoy things. No matter how bad of quality they were.

I never had a problem with Costanza. He made that 3 blu ray for $3 thread and I appreciate that from him

I wasn't around for any of that and really only came into the fold in '06 when I bought a DS, so I suppose I missed most of the crazy.

I don't think Costanza was a joke character, but I'm still convinced he completely made up that Asian girl thread, and I never took him too seriously after that.

i guess it's a haters gonna hate situation, since he's more famous on gaf than a lot of us.

real talk:
costanza hooked a lot of people up with deals. dude is way more beneficial than the majority of the people here.
 
Costanza can't be fake...he spent so much time in the community thread. You don't just fake liking a tv show like he did. Wasnt he the president of the annie brigead. Man if that was all a joke then this is a big letdown...constanza is one of the few gaffers names that I notice.

Yeah it's a little different here now. Honestly my account only started in 05 so I haven't been here much longer, but when I got my account I perceived GAF as a very anti-Nintendo fanboy community at the time... Looking at Nintendo's decisions/sales in the previous years, and the amount of Nintendovangelists who nontheless survived, I'm not surprised that this industry-saavy community was down on them.

2005 was about GAF discovering the DS (and Nintendo making money) and that sentiment eased.
 
I do miss Crushed, he was hilarious, and had a seemingly endless library of uncannily-appropriate gifs/pics.

The sad thing is, you can't even go back and laugh at his older posts, he was just totally wiped out of existence. :lol

I'm kind of half and half with joke characters...I like them but when I get to actual conversation/debate with them it just is rather old.

I hated Greatness Gone. I love jett.

Costanza wasn't a joke character. He was a pretty good fellow who just got into the whole EviLore = Big Brother Nazi thing a bit too much.

real talk: costanza took a bunch of free XBL codes from another forum and turned around and sold a bunch of them for a profit.

I don't really care myself, but come on, he's not fucking Robin Hood.

and anyway, Costanza isn't a (total) joke character, he just embellished shit from time to time.
 
Has anyone else mentioned the guy who makes a thread every six months or so like "what's your gamestoop guy like?" or "boy mets world". Maximumfeet? I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure he has fun with his threads.
