Notorious joke characters of GAF past

since I only recently joined (lurked in early 2009, registered later that year and my account was like activated a long time after that), I don't know much about GAF history... hell, I even missed Costanza's ban (why was he banned anyway?)

I gotta say docpan's threads are hilarious. all that roid rage and social ineptitude... also, Dedication Through Light's random "lol" all over the place, lol, really cracked me up somehow, lol.

Constanza was an ok guy, didnt knew he was a joke character.

While with Nintendo, you'll have people who swallowed the kool-aid 20 years ago and were completely out of touch (at least 2001-2004). Those who had never even dabbled in Sony or Sega were a sad bunch at that point. I would often hear things like "Only Nintendo is real gaming LOVE... because they care about FUN" and it would make you want to puke.

Nah, how they responded to the start of this gen pretty much illustrated they are right up there with the worst of Nintendo's flock. This gen produced some quality laughs.
 
Costanza? I don't understand what could ever annoy you about him or what was a joke character part about him? All the threads I've seen started by him were some sales threads, or he was otherwise participating in some of the most inoffensive threads you can get here - iphone gaming or music and movies.

My guess is that he did meet a half-Japanese girl he fancied in his class, but that he either never talked to her or crashed and burned when he did. Rather than report back to GAF with his failure and relegating his Girl-Age thread to their typical status, he then went on to create this fantastic victory scenario where he busted this girl's hymen with a piece of fruit, lost his virginity to her, got sick of her, dumped her and had an on-again/off-again friends-with-benefits relationship with her.

All the while, after an evening of continuing the charade, he'd log off from GAF and cry himself to sleep because he was alone... so very alone.

Oh, and the fat-rolls girl rejected him too. That was obviously sour grapes.

drakefortune (I think that was his name) was one of my favorites, at least I hope he was a joke character.

He would always post some "Ayn Rand"-like political rant in random threads that weren't related to politics. And he posted several in political threads.

He was perma-banned I think....

And I can tell you as a matter of fact that not only has 'fistful' not changed but he's managed to decimate his good name further.

Also, a year before you got here, a crazy Nintendo fanboy from Australia named Grubdog got hold of some admin's account and started deleting (not just banning) people from GAF. MrAngryFace and Drinky Crow were among the first. Then it was anyone who said anything negative about Nintendo (some did it to test the waters). Then others were removed for wondering if they'd be next because [random reason here] and they usually were.

They finally got everything under control and Grubdog was permabanned. Then Drinky Crow was made a mod (or admin, I can't remember).

This happened a little before the forum crashed for a little while, when people were calling it NeoGAF, but it wasn't known as NeoGAF. When it came back, it had the NeoGAF name and the forum began to separate from Gaming-Age.

Seriously, I hate joke characters. The only ones they are funny to is themselves, which makes it 10x more pathetic. It's a hell of a lot funnier when people makes asses out of themselves in complete earnestness.

I first came to recognise fistfulofmetal on the gaming side as an ardent Sony fanboy. Later on, I just saw him as a shy kid with a fetish for androgyny who was just a little too into a celebrity crush. He never did talk to that girl on the train.

But yeah, total joke character. Maybe there was no girl on the train.
 
There was (is?) that super HD-DVD fan who liked to bring up the format's superiority to Blu-ray years after its demise.

Not a big enough thing to cause me to remember the user name, but he's out there.
 
People in this topic are having a hard time telling the difference between joke character and just jokes.

The guy who makes all those Michael Mann/Miami Vice threads, that is a joke character. Siamesedream, Chinner, those posters are just annoying.

Drinky Crow used to be mod on account of being Gaming-Age staff, and had been so since before 1999, although he's used other usernames in the past like Wrathful God Of Moses. What's relatively recent is when he stopped being a mod by his own choice.
 
Fistful sounded normal is that podcast he was on. He did state he loved forum attention. Costanza is probably going through a mid-young-adult crisis since his move to LA. I doubt he was ever a joke character-he only saying that to get some attention or tired part of his new life approach. Kinda feel sorry for the both of them.
