NPD Sales Results for June 2014 [Up3: All Hardware (June/LTD), Top 10 Software SKUs]

The PS4 had strong competition from both sides this month. Wii U had Mario Kart's first month proper, a game that'll most likely be the console's biggest ever exclusive no less, while the One had the newly-introduced Kinect-less SKU to meet price parity.

PS4 still came out on top. Welp.

Maybe Nintendo can quickly bundle NES Remix 1/2 for an August release or something?

Fun enough game, and I think it packs a decent enough nostalgia factor to intrigue new console owners.

Weren't those "estimates" based upon SINCE JUNE 9th, and not using NPD figures but some weird Microsoft internal tracking?

Microsoft has an open dialogue with all of the major retailers that comprise the good majority of NPD.

They know their own hardware sales. They're not trying to mislead people.

Get back to me when Sony wins over 2 years in a row straight of NPD numbers.

Hell, I'm just glad Sony is announcing NPD numbers now, and that the Sony fan is excited for NPD numbers these days as well!

Pretty surprised. I figured announcing the Xbone price cut a month in advance would have driven up demand to push it ahead of the PS4 for the month, but I guess even that hasn't helped. I don't think price parity is good enough given the hardware and third-party differences.

I gotta say yes to 2. I bought a 3DS and mario kart, 3d land are right there and on the cheap with smash bros on the horizon. In addition to what has to be the single greatest year for games on a single system in the last decade, 2013, number 2 is definite reality.

I wonder how much more laser focused Nintendo's business would be if they only had one console. Or a hybrid portable-home console where the portal system docks into the main system.

Seems like that would be the killer system to own as opposed to diverting the company's resources and talents in half.

Don Mattrick, 2008.

"History has shown us that
the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation
battle."

I would honestly be surprised if the threshold is even that high, but I guess it does account for consoles that release a year or so apart.

Really no surprises at all.

Thought wiiu might over take the xbone but that didnt happen.

This was MS last chance to over take the PS4 this year. Its a wrap folks. PS4 will lead console sale for the rest of the year.

this should have been a bad month for PS4. I can see a lot of people holding off for the white bundle.

MK8 was almost surely the highest software SKU, then. I hope.
Fantastic! The Luigi Death Stare drives sales... is what we can say anecdotally with zero actual evidence. There's also no way to quantify this, but maybe there's a weird "nostalgia bump" for Nintendo? A new console MK instantly triggers fond memories of playing the others. When their numbers were so dead every month it's not hard to find something that's a "bump", I figure.

Well you're no fun at all!

It was.

A bunch of sequels, sports games and remasters. At least this month has a new IP at #1 for the second month in a row.

The doom and gloom comes from the fact that the Xbox One doesn't do nearly as well worldwide as the PS4.

It was never going to. The reason the 360 sold almost as well as the PS3 is due to a variety of reasons, not limited to, the decline of Japan and the $600 price tag, which lead to them losing most of America. The PS4 was always going to sell more than the One, since it was revealed that it was doing as good, and better in America than Xbox One. The PS4 is more popular in Europe and will be more popular in Japan, even when the Xbox One launches.

I'm not sure if Nintendo should be happy or disappointed by those Wii U sales figures given the the state of Wii U's sluggish sales performance and Mario Kart 8 not doing much to drive software in the other regions. I know MK8's sales have more than doubled from last month's sales, but this game is one of Nintendo's biggest IPs and they added a cherry on top (free eShop purchase). Things are going to slowly for Wii U to pick up the pace.

So I think we should all just take a second and mourn over our collective predictions

Good on you Nintendo for subverting expectations

Thank you for keeping it real. All retailers provide sales figures to manufacturers on a very regular basis. When I was a buyer, we sent Sony,MS, and Nintendo figures sometimes daily during major releases. Most of the time they were sent via EDI.

Is the US market that important to Nintendo? Looking at the Media Create charts, it seems like Nintendo dominates in Japan (3DS at least) or is the Wii U just losing so much money across the board that it drags the rest of the company down.

America is traditionally the strongest market for Nintendo consoles.

I thought the Watch Dogs 360 version outselling the XB1 version was very surprising, personally.
I really wonder if it's actually true that more 360 gamers are waiting to upgrade than PS3 owners. It doesn't seem to make sense that 360 games are outselling their XB1 counterparts. Maybe they're waiting for Halo. Who knows.

Wii over 100k?!! 140k to be precise!!

This is huuuuuuuuuuuuge. First time ever it's over 100k outside Nov-Dec. First time ever Wii U beats the GameCube (monthly).

This is cause for celebration. Where's that gif of Nintendo guys in squids?

Wii U is hitting its stride.

I don't think SCEA even released/resstock any Vita for June. It's pretty rare to find one nowadays that is msrp.

Thanks. Not as bad as some would have you believe. Still a lot of room for improvement.

This issue isn't the XB1 performing poorly relative to the PS4. The problem is XB1 is selling less than PS4 in the territory MS completed dominated last generation. A 50/50 split is not good for MS. They have a heavy reliance on USA for worldwide sales. If MS is losing in the USA, how badly is it for them worldwide?
