Find others with the info and average the data, then leak the averaged numbers, trimmed to 2 significant figures.

If you're really paranoid, do the same thing but only release the numbers every 2 months, as the totals for the 2 months.

Then you just adjust every number up or down 10% and say it has a 5% margin of error. They'll expect to be able to catch you with a small adjustment but you should still be significantly safe.

That, or you have two leakers compare their data to see what NPD's range is.

There are thousands of games being tracked every month. A top 10 is nothing. Even the hardware numbers they gave weren't all that when there are so many different SKUs out there (How much did the PSP go really sell? Nobody knows, despite monthly PSP sales being bestowed on us for free.) Not to mention all the revenue side of the estimation, consumer profiling etc.

This isn't going to make anyone buy their subscriptions. NPD would make more money if they adopted the White Paper practice. That would be something commoners like us here in GAF might pay for.

My point was that anybody who isn't packing the same kind of heat as porn stars doesn't need them (even then), so... yeah? At any rate, I can't say size has ever been an issue for me one way or the other.

Though, from a utility point of view, there is more danger in making sizes that are too big to fit snugly because then they'll slip off. Now that would be a distressing situation.

Depends on what you're talking about. It is possible (and has happened) that NPD has reported a higher sell-through than the publisher reported shipped before. Actual sales? No. Reported sales? Those can be higher than shipped.

If NPD does their statistical voodoo and estimates Kinect sold 3,217 copies, they can easily tell subscribers it sold 3200. Or 3204. or 3241. Etc. As long as the range lies within the stated confidence interval for their stated methodology, there's no harm done.

When some dipshit goes on GAF and posts that Kinect sold 3204 copies, NPD will know who leaked the numbers.

And not every customer has to have unique numbers for every piece of hardware/software.
Simply going with the 3 consoles and the top 5 software, and a range of -2 to +2, you've got 390,625 unique data sets.

These two posts reflect the appeal of sales-age for me. It's nice to see a quality game without much hype become a sleeper and sell a lot more than it should have. I hyped the hell out of Bayonetta on another board and I was happy to see it sell a lot more than anyone expected. I'm very interested to see if Lords of Shadow is a sleeper or a dud. I was hoping Vanquish would go the Bayonetta route as well.

So, NPD has now put a "hard cap" on all gaming stats. Using the equation NPD-->NeoGAF-->Internet-->Mind of all gamers, NPD has messed up bad, IMO. They are irrelevant now. That also lowers NeoGAF's status as well. Now everything is relegated to VGC*****.com estimates.

There's quite a difference there. I created threads that were completely up-front about the dubious nature of certain statistics - statistics that are indeed worldwide and comprehensive though, at least. I was genuinely starting a conversation that deliberately asked people to tear holes in my logic. Some holes were torn, some validity remains.

Especially considering that Tripwire basically confirmed one of my conclusions.


It's quite reductive to compare that to immature Platform Warz (tm).
