Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

my 970 just crapped out on me last night and now the wait for the non reference cards are going to be 2 to 3 times a long, especially at a decent price.
 
I've been kind of debating on whether to spend $400+ for a 1070 in the next two or three months (waiting on game bundles to show up and whatever issues there may be to come out) or just wait on replacing my year old 970 SSC or hold off and do a Kaby Lake based rebuild when it comes out and wait for the 1100 series or just upgrade to a 1070 this year and either do the i7 Kaby Lake upgrade in 2017 or hold off a bit longer for Cannon Lake to replace my OC'd (4.5GHz) 2500K based system. I'm still leaning towards a 1070 this year and Cannon Lake when it comes out late next year since that would line up more with my initial plan of waiting until 2018. I'm not super hung up on it though since my 2500k still does fine at 60FPS, I just have a feeling that the 3.5GB VRAM issue is going to become more of a limitation in the next ~18 months than my CPU.

I hear you I'm in a similar position except I have an i7 2600k. I'm probably going to jump on the MSI Gaming 1070 once it comes out to replace my 970. Although everything runs fine now some games seem to need more VRAM for the higher end settings (Ultra) but I'm going to guess 3.5 VRAM should be good for the next year with Medium/High settings and maybe even Ultra, however keeping 60 fps with those settings in the next 18 months is something else.
 
I don't really know how this works but from what I see here in Poland founders edition 1070 cards are the same price as custom designs. It is also true in some shops from Germany. Some customs are even more expensive than founders.

most of the custom cards for both 1070 and 1080 should be less than the FE. Some high end like EVGA classified or MSI gaming X may be more expensive (MSI are premium pricing this time around)

But a lot of the 1070 custom cards are being overpriced compared to their equivalent 1080 cards. I would guess it is retailers taking advantage and marking them up for more profit while demand is high and supply is low. If you can wait the prices should come down.

The MSI gaming X shuts the fans off completely until I think 60c, so the idle temp isn't unusual. If it concerned you, you could put a custom fan profile to run the fans slowly to keep it cooler. I'd guess normal case airflow should help too - maybe that was being tested on an open bench?

should be fine. Really high frame rates might struggle a little, but at 60 you'll be fine. The 1070 should have enough headroom to add lots of nice AA or downsampling from a higher resolution.

~420€ price point is reserved for the most barebones custom cards once the prices settle down a bit. 1070 has been released for roughly two days now and weekend days at that.

The three cards you linked are not the most barebones cards but they should at least approach that price point in few months time.

Anyone claiming it's overkill for 1080p is wrong. Same for the GTX1080. You can still downsample or push graphics options... or even be safe for later games if you aim 60fps.

Agreed, the benchmarks have clearly showed this from the beginning. People need to keep their expectations tempered.

This is also why I'm starting to strongly consider going with a 1080 instead.

RotTR has already been tamed by the 1080. I'm able to run it in it's most demanding sections with 40+ fps in 4K, all settings maxed except HBAO+ instead of VXAO, FXAA instead of SMAA, and PureHair On instead of Very High.

Considering that 1080p is 1/4 the pixels of 4K, if you aren't blowing past 100 fps in RotTR with a 1080 in 1080p in that game, you are doing something seriously wrong.

The only reason I haven't tried VXAO is that right now the RotTR client doesn't know what a 1080 is and turning it on will crash the game immediately on startup.
 
Just picked up a 1070 for the computer I'm building for my uncle, he only plays World of Warcraft and World of Tanks but he's thinking that now that he has a better computer he'll branch off, ended up buying Overwatch in anticipation. The computer i built is near identical to the one I built myself last week save for mine has the 1080 and his has slightly faster RAM, looking forward to benchmarking the two against each other myself.

Honestly quantum break has been a shit storm since it released so its not exactly the best
example and ROTTR is getting over 100fps with direct X12 at 1080p and 82fps at 1440p. If anything the card might not be overkill for 1440p but 1080p should be a walk in the park.

Edit: after reading the guru 3d review of the MSI 1070 gaming I realized they were running ROTTR with FXAA with all instead of max AA which is why the fps was so high.

I think the 1070's may be pricing themselves out of usefulness.

When it's $380 for a 1070 and $600 for a 1080, the comparison is favorable for the 1070.

These 1070 custom boards at $450 vs a basic 1080 at $600... may make the 1080 a better buy.

Also, people looking for 970-level price cards, might be disappointed whenever 1060/60TI comes out costing just that and offering 10% more performance than 970.
Makes little sense to upgrade. :\

Nvidia has an actual reason to make the 1060 good though, since the 480 might actually be no slouch.
 
I bought myself a new cooler on the assumption that if I can overclock my 2500k further Everything Will Be Okay

After 2 years, that would be garbage-tier level upgrade.
 
So, I really want to go 1070 because I'm still running a 1080p monitor (though it's 144Hz). The 1080 is expensive as hell.

That being said, Canadian pricing is making it so hard to do so.


1080 FE = 910 CAD = 711 USD
1070 FE = 620 CAD = 484 USD

1080 EVGA ACX 3.0 = 830 CAD = 650 USD
1070 MSI Armor = 580 CAD = 450 USD

What I really want is the 1070 MSI Gaming X, but it's 650 CAD, which is absurd.

I 100% agree. I'm itching to pull the trigger myself, but not at these prices, no way.

That said, who can blame manufacturers and retailers to tack on a 60€-80€ premium "for free" if they still sell out of every available stock immediately? Here's hoping the inflated prices don't last for long... but I'm not particularly hopeful.

Well, you're certainly not going to get a frame rate to match the refresh rate on modern games but if you're still just aiming for 60FPS it'll be fine for the most part.

If the 480 really does end up being above the 980's performance as it seems to potentially be for just $200 that might force NVIDIA to do something, a comparable 1060, maybe and Hopefully even forcing them to alter the pricing of the 1070.

Or they'll just ignore it because they don't care and own the market and AMD is their own worst enemy.

Why would they alter the pricing of a much faster card? Depending on where RX480 will end up they'll either put a GP104 1060Ti or GP106 1060 against it.
 
I wonder if the 1060 would become the new 970? I'm sure the pricing will be more in line with better performance. I'm gonna guess pretty much anything at 1080p 60fps?
 
Just got back from a 5 day music festival. What's the consensus on the msi armor? I know people were singing praises of the 1080 version of the Asus strix but currently it's £100 more than the msi. Is that just a supply premium?
 
If I preorder the MSI FE 1070 that's available on Amazon right now, how many days do you guys reckon it would take for it to ship? (It would then take 5-8 days on top of that since I am using Free Shipping)

1060 is supposed to be 970 +~15% and full 6 GB of VRAM.
Costing the same as 970 now.
Hardly worth the upgrade for 970 owners, anyone with a lower card willing to play at 1080p60 should be happy with it though.
