Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

I ordered the 399 gigabyte version from Newegg. It's my first card sine the 9500pro and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do once I get it installed. Do I install drivers from a disc or do I download them from Nvidia? How do I go about using the factory overclock? Thanks in advance.

Download the drivers from the website, you want the latest ones available. If it's factory overclocked you shouldn't have to do anything, it should already be running at a higher clockspeed.

Got my Gigabyte GTX 1070 in today. It *screams*. Chewed through Mirror's Edge Catalyst max settings like nothing. (Though, man, a lot of the source textures are low-res in the game. Kind of hurts the backdrops.)

Mainly I'm using this for Unreal 4 development though, and it's amazing being able to do basically anything I want with zero slowdown.

waiting on my PC parts coming today which includes the MSI 1070 Gaming X. So excited. It will be replacing my R9 290. this is my first nvidia card. it will have an i7-6700K and 16GB DDR4 @3200 working alongside it. the i7-6700K is replacing my i5-4590.

can't wait to see what this new build can do! i'm just about to run a firestrike benchmark on my current PC so i can see the difference later on!

Nice, I should hopefully be getting my MSI 1070 X today too. Also to pair with a 6700k.

What Z170 motherboard did you get?

Yeah this is what will push me to eventually jump in on these new cards. VR is awesome and I'm glad we got a 1070 at work specifically for it, but all I could think about while watching it in action was how much faster I could speed up the workflow on my own personal projects.

It was like 900-something. Figured it out though, I did an unstable overclock and the GPU reverted to safe mode. Rebooting fixed it, seems fine now. Still getting slightly lower performance than reviews indicate but I think that's due to my 2500k and 8 GB RAM.

Holy shit though Doom FLIES on this thing. 2880 x 1620, all maxed out with 8x TXAA, averages around 90 FPS.

yeah i was a bit too ambitious with my overclock too, but i noticed it wasnt clocking as high right away after the driver was crashed so i didn't have your frustration :(

dialing it -10 core and -25 memory everytime it crashes because certain games stress the card differently so hard to tell for overclocks if its 80% stable instead of 100%

but yeah this card is really freakin amazing!

Anyone here got experience with the Zotac 1070 AMP?

+solid product
+low noise when idle (fan auto-off)
+still low noise when under load
+40-45C idle temp with fan off
+65-75C load temp at 1500 rpm
+high factory OC (can reach 2 GHz out of the box, but usually stays at 1969 MHz)
+cool LED and cool board/cooler design
+cheapest GTX 1070 in my country
+2x8pin PCIe power should improve OC capability

-LED can't show Red or Yellow color (not RGB)
-short warranty at my place (1 year)

that $400 Gigabyte card went back in stock at 10:47, finally got it!

and now this PC build I started in April will be complete!

The MSI Gaming X clock modes listed on newegg seem to be way off.

From my experience, using MSI App, all 3 core clock modes are set to 1582 MHz.
And OC Mode's boost clock is actually 1961 MHz.

That's good enough that I probably won't worry about the fact that Afterburner is broken on my system. I may just update the bios to default clocks to OC mode and disable the MSI App.

One thing about the boost clock: GPU Boost dynamically increases clocks until some sort of limit (power, temperature, or voltage) is reached, at which point it throttles to stay under that limit. As a result, the listed boost clock is never the same as the actual one, and it varies depending on the silicon lottery. There's no way to list a true official boost clock.

Guys, this whole Founders Edition stuff has completely confused me. Are all of these 3rd party cards considered FEs right now? If not why are they all around $450? And if they are, when can we expect to see sub $400 cards?

The Gigabyte Windforce 2X (non-FE, non-reference) is $399 :)

It's been going in and out of stock at Newegg.

If I plan to never attempt an overclock would it be worth it to just pay the extra to get a SC card? How big of a discernible performance difference would that make? Are these Gigabyte Windforce 2X cards reliable (I've never owned a Gigabyte product)?

Oh, thanks for the info.
Maybe newegg lists low, like the minimum boost you could end up with.

I wonder if 1961 boost indicates that i have a good card and might be able top dial it up beyond 2k when i reinstall win10 to fix afterburner.

Played 3 hours of overwatch last night. Epic settings, 150% resolution scaling, locked to 70fps. Logs show card barely ever hitting 99% gpu load. Not the best showcase, but it sure looks sharp.

This card pairs so well with the 3570k, although I know it'll become a bottleneck at some point.

Holding out for Kaby Lake processors. Hopefully by the time I get my tax refund in February they'll be out and worth the upgrade.

Has anyone seen any reviews for the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Sea Hawk X (it has the built in Corsair watercooler)? I just ordered one on a whim and I cannot find any reviews on it and barely any other information.

Should be here by the weekend, but I'd like to do some reading until then. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hype

So I bought the Nvidia branded (not Evga, MSI, etc) 1070 FE from Best Buy last night and my stock boost clocks without touching anything are hovering around 1870mhz under full load. Is this normal? Did I win the lottery?

Hey guys, anyone know how mfaa works? Does the game need to support it? Can I enable it on the drive panel and just have it work? Do I have to use msaa in game? Turn it off? Will it override or enhance existing msaa in game?

this is pretty bad right?

What are you talking about? This is all normal.

Edit: Oh. Go to the sensors tab while a game is running. This isn't a good way of doing this though and I'd recommend just downloading MSI Afterburner and just looking at the reading on the OSD while in game.

I bought that combo and returned the mouse yesterday
Wait, how does that work? I'll keep that in mind if it ever goes back on sale. I want that card soooooooooo bad.

EDIT OH SHIT IT'S BACK IN STOCK AND IN MY CART YES PLEASE HELP ME WITH HOW THIS RETURN THING WORKS I DON'T WANT THIS FUCKING MOUSE

It doesn't indicate anything, really. You should be able to get over 2GHz though just on account of the fact that almost every card can.

Also, I've been trying to figure out the point of that boost clock for years. It might be minimum.

I'll do so today when it arrives. Anything you want to see besides stuff from GPU-Z?

Just the temps

Got my ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG STRIX today.

Only tried Dark Souls 3 so far but the game crashes, or don't even start, and gives me an out of memory error.

Installing Witcher 3 now instead. Hopefully it will run at least.

Bought the combo, seconds before it went out of stock. LUCKY.

Now uh, how did you return that mouse again? Is it super easy to do? I wouldn't have gone through with the purchase if I have to keep the mouse...

Did you remove the driver for your previous card first?

Newegg said:
If an individual Combo or Kit item is returned for a refund, the applicable discount will be voided, and the discounted amount will be deducted from the amount of the refund. If your combo/kit discount amount is greater than the individual unit price of the item you wish to return, then the item cannot be returned for a refund; you will need to return all items in the combo/kit in order to receive a refund.
- For example: if your combo/kit discount was $5, and you return one of the items for a refund, the $5 will be deducted from your refund amount.

Basically, if you return the mouse, you don't get any discount on the item you keep. There's no advantage to buying the bundle over just the card unless the card by itself is sold out. No downside though!

EDIT:
QuantumBro, can you also give a noise report? Just if the card seems loud, max fan %, and if there's any coil whine. Thanks!

You can return the mouse, but becasue it's part of a combo they reduce your refund. Most likely by $30 since we bought the same combo

G1 is definitely not an overclocking champ, that's for sure. Couldn't get stable at +150. Not too upset about it though, the factory OC is fucking hefty as it is. Hovers around 2000 MHz when it's fully loaded.

Mine can't go past +70 (2063MHz) lol. What are you using to overclock? Afterburner?

So if I have a GTX 980 and can pretty much max out any game I want is there any reason to go to the 1070?

No. If there isn't some game you want to play now, there is no reason to upgrade. Cards only get cheaper, wait until you encounter a game you can't enjoy sufficiently because of performance.

Got my MSI Armor yesterday from NCIX Canada. As far as overclocking goes on Afterburner, +140 for core and +750 is pretty stable with the exception of Overwatch for whatever reason. Was able to play BF4, the Witcher 3, Squad, Red Orchestra 2, World of Warships, and Doom with 0 issues.

Gonna see if I can push the core clock to +150 to see if its stable. Anyone else have the Armor with overclocking results?

The wait for a 1440p/144hz monitor at a good price continues

That's perfectly fine. The card is out of stock and I'm not trying to get a deal on it; I just wanted to buy the card at the normal price. Thanks!!! :)
