Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Considering picking up a 1070 to replace my 780ti SLI setup. I get speed up in all the games that dont support SLI and I get the VRAM for everything else. I also save on my power bill. Still wouldwait for an AIB customized one so the OC can be pushed further(hopefully) with more power headroom.

Looks like Pascal is not fully on the DX12 Async train like the GCN architecture is, and that is ok because only a few games support it currently.

380+40=420. 420 is pretty close to 450 in my book. But you're right, most OC models will likely be ~$400.

New games tend to work better on Maxwell and Pascal architectures for a multitude of reasons.

CB.de have 770 in their 1080p benchmark of GTX 1080, you can pretty much guess where 1070 will end up on these charts compared to 770 (hint: look at 980Ti stock result and add a couple of frames).
 
Really excited for this, I have not upgraded since my 560Ti in 2011, and I can't justify the price of a 1080. Since I only game at 1080p anyway it looks like the 1070 will serve me well. Hopefully the non-FE edition will be out at a reasonable price in time for the Steam Summer Sale!
 
Gonna replace my 670 with 1070
Seems like it'll be a big jump.

But I have asus 1080p 60Hz monitor right now. Should I get another monitor? :/
 
i just can't believe a x70 would be this much of a jump... i was expecting this thing to be a 980 with more VRAM, basically

kind of makes me wish i didn't go in on that HP deal, just stuck with my alienware x51 and put a 1060 in there, assuming there's commensurate gains with that card. but whatever i'm just glad this kind of gains are possible in such short amount of time, it benefits everybody

What are the physical measurements of this card? Is it relatively big?

The GTX 1070 uses the same 4.3x10.5-inch chassis as its more expensive GTX 1080 brother. This means you get the same angular die-cast aluminum enclosure, radial blower fan which exhausts heat outside chassis (which is good for compact Mini-ITX systems), three copper heatpipes for cooling, and a low-profile removable backplate.

Seriously people that don't think that 970 to 1070 is a worthy upgrade are crazy. You're talking a 50-75% increase in performance while at the same time doubling performance per watt. Plus if you were smart enough to sell your 970 before the official 1070 announcement, the upgrade won't even cost you that much.

500 watts would be more than fine for a single card and a 1070, it might be testers using newer, more efficient hardware but there's benches where total system power consumption was under 300 watts, at least at stock.



From the benches I saw the 1070 uses less power than the 960, yes. I wager you probably have a good deal of room on your PSU unless it's some crappy pre-built one but still if you can run a 960 you'll be more than fine.


AMD doesn't have squat unfortunately, if they did or at least had a card coming soon that was competitive with a 1070 for less they'd be shouting it from the roof tops, we'd be seeing "leaks" about it but we haven't really heard anything.

Depends on what you mean by competitive. Something At 980 levels at 299 would be pretty awesome. They have said that they're targeting mainstream cards though, that means that the ultra high end is nvidia's territory until vega launches in a few months.
 
I'm excited to get this card in my rig, it will replace my gtx 760. I don't even really need it until Battlefield 1 comes out, so no need to worry about shortages or founder's edition bs.

Not 100% sure, but I don't think there is enough space in the X51 for that card.
 
I'll definitely be trying to get this before the new Deus Ex comes out.

Upgrading from a GTX 690 (2GB). I don't think I'll have to worry about lack of VRAM being an issue (at least for a while).
 
This card is too good a price vs value proposition. Its gonna be marked above MSRP and out of stock for months I bet.

I don't think a 980-level card at that price would be very exciting, the 970 and 390 are already that much and only about 15% slower. It would barely be an upgrade from the last generation.

Yeah, the 1070 isn't competing directly with Polaris but it's such a leap at the $379 price it'll put downwards price pressure on AMD for sure. I'd bet initially AMD wanted to drop full Polaris 10 at $299, but I'm not sure that's going to be good enough at this point.

Now that we know what the 1070 can do, AMD is going to have to either exceed expectations on the full Polaris 10 and get it very close to 1070 performance (say, within 10%-15%) in order to keep the $299 price-point... or if that's not possible and the best it can do is to match Fury X/980 I think they'll need to drop that price a bit.

If (Polaris 10) 480 meets Fury / 970 performance for $199 and the 480X matches Fury X / 980 performance for $249 - $279 that would be a way AMD could make some inroads. If the perf slips lower and price creeps higher they're going to struggle to make much of a dent. They don't necessarily need Polaris to be a "loss leader", but IMHO they're going to have to accept lower margins at the mid-range to get back mindshare and market share. AMD has been saying and presumably doing all the right things for the past few months, so it seems as if they're already aware of how and where they need to target the market with Polaris. But I think it's possible the 1070 has exceeded expectations to a degree that its essentially a minor disruptive product that will reset gamer expectations at every price-point. So AMD may have to adjust their pricing plan for Polaris if the performance isn't quite what it needs to be.

The 1070 is a huge leap at that $379 price point and I'd say because of this we're quickly approaching a time when 970 / 1060 / baby Polaris (480) level performance is going to be considered lower-mid or even entry level (which is kind of mind-blowing because the 970 is still a ~$300 card...but not for much longer).
 
For $450 (who are we trying to fool anyway?) this is amazing!!
Shame I only have a 1080p 60hz display .. I guess supersampling 1440p will be my path to take.

This is would be a huge upgrade from my GTX760.
 
As per Videocardz.com, Inno3D just "teased" a third Pascal card placed under the 1070 - presumably the 1060 - that's going to ship soon. Rocks the GP106 and performs somewhere between the 970 and 980. If they launch at $199 that's going to put major price pressure on AMD for Polaris 10 / 480.

It's a big assumption on my part, but I think nVidia might also drop a x60Ti part for the first time in a couple gens. The GP104 would seem to fit as I doubt its a 1070 Mini or 1070 Mobile. nVidia tends to release desktop before mobile, soooo....

Yeah, pure speculation. But, if nVidia offers a 1060 at $199 - $229 and a 1060Ti at $249-279 it'll have two parts competing directly with the 480 and 480X.

If it was $200, performed above a 970 (i.e. quite good on all games at high settings at 1080p), and had a lower TDP/less heat than the 970, that'd be really really dope.

I agree with you. Cause I'm running a 1440p/144hz I really thought I was on the GTX 1080 wagon, honestly, i wanted all the performance I could get. But it seems like the GTX1070 has 15-20% less performance and neither card overclocks as well as cards in the past (prob due to the already high clocks). That's like going from 70fps to 60fps at ultra settings. And I don't really play at ultra anyway. Very High is good enough for me.

Secondly, the cost difference in Australian dollars is $550 vs $900 between the two cards. I'm honestly thinking of dropping down to the 1070. I didn't want to get it, cause I could have easily gotten the 980Ti six months ago, but that $350 price difference is putting me in the 1070 camp as of this morning. Plus i'm not going to be unlocking the bios to overclock the card like crazy either. I'll watch some more reviews, but the 1070 looks like the better buy right now.
 
It seems that the Founders Edition GTX 1070 is going to be priced at around $799 here in Australia according to Kotaku Australia. That's a $400 difference between the 1070/80 FE cards.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the pricing of the non-FE cards now.
 
I promised myself I would stick with my GTX 960 till at least 2019,wonder what process node we'll be at then. I also wonder if next year's HBM2-equipped cards will be as big a jump as the 970 to 1070.

So non FE cards to start around $699... thats still pretty high considering GTX 970 started around $500-550.

That's all well and nice but regardless of all you said in certain light boost games I'm not going to hit the sweet spot still so it's a waste. I can wait for something 1080 and above in a year or two to satisfy me.

I'm crazy.
 
Looks like a good card, but not enough of an improvement over my 970 to buy right now. Waiting for a xx70 series that lets me either max at 1080p/144Hz, or 4k at 60 fps. But I'm fine waiting for HBM2.
 
My 970 is out, my old 570 is in, waiting for my future new 1070 to arrive. Well, to be pre-ordered first and then to arrive :P

I managed to sell my 970 for €210, so I'm quite happy with what I'm saving towards the upgrade.
 
As someone who is not interested in overclocking my GPU, should I wait until everything settles down or would the cards available in a few weeks be the ones to get? Or will Founders Edition be the only thing available until July?

I gave up trying to overclock my CPU becauae it was a insurmountable task to me. Overclocking a GPU seems to be in the same ballpark of beyond me.

The fact i could build my PC without breaking anything is a achievement in my book.
 
Having a 650watt PSU with 8-pin cable and an i7 4790K, I'll have to replace my decnt GTX660, probably with this model. Or the CPU goes to waste. Not for the benchmarks and new 3D games but because it will have 4 times the performance using the same power consumption.

You don't have to overclock the shit out of them and spend ages figuring out what speeds are fully stable. For any Intel CPU from Ivy Bridge forward you should be able to get something like 4.2-4.3 GHz quite easily. Just change the multiplier and add a little bit of voltage. The worst thing that can generally happen is that you need to find out where the CMOS reset jumper or switch is on your motherboard.

With GPUs it's even easier, just literally adjust a few sliders.

There is bound to be a lot of action around entry level VR cards and aggressive pricing - so 970 class performance for as low a price as possible. I'd like to see nvidia and AMD bash heads here as it might have a small chance of lowering overall pricing - and frankly they seem to be avoiding direct confrontation at the high end these days

The thing is that AMD is more or less playing right into Nvidia's hands right now. They are going to launch Polaris 10/11 after Pascal GP104 (1070/1080), but then Nvidia can just look at P10/11 and decide how fast the GP106 (1060) will need to be and how much it will cost.

It's like watching a guy get bluffed and lose everything in poker these days when you look at the game of pricing chicken Nvidia has been playing with AMD, they completely rekt AMD with the 980 Ti vs. Fury X price game last year.

Also AMD just doesn't have a high end part this year, otherwise you better believe they would be going right at Nvidia.

Can't believe this card... Less power hungry will fit in my cooler master elite 130 case and it kicks the shit out of the 960... This is going to be great!
