Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Yeah, pretty much. Fairly new to the whole GPU release culture, never knew that it was so terrible. Extremely insufficient supplies, extremely bloated prices due to low supply/high demand etc.
It's not always like that, it only happens when the cards in question are really popular and/or in low supply.

It might have been getting worse over the years, maybe it's due to PC gaming becoming more popular ;)

Yeah, pretty much. Fairly new to the whole GPU release culture thing, never knew that it was so terrible. Extremely insufficient supplies, extremely bloated prices due to low supply/high demand, resales at absurd prices on ebay (as is the case with every low supply item) etc. Certainly something I'm not going to keep doing; the only reason it's an issue for me now is because I'm building a new PC from scratch.

Same otherwise I'd be unpressured to wait

Thinking of pre-ordering the MSI 1070 Gaming X. $450 is more than I wanted to pay, but I was waiting to upgrade before playing the Witcher expansions and they're quite high on my hype chart.

Wouldn't it be better to go with a 970 then?
They are in stock everywhere, usually on clearance sales (so cheap, cheap, cheap), and by the time you will play everything 970 can run (which is... everything released so far?), you will be able to upgrade either to 1070 or even 1170.

I recall hearing somewhat similar stories during the release of the 770 and 780 as well as the release of 980 and 970. So basically at the release of each new main "series" of GPU.
I'm glad that PC gaming is becoming more popular, which may have lead to the current situation. I also cannot comment on the difficulty and manufacturing of such cards, so I can't say if manufacturers just keep underestimating the pool of interested buyers. I just find the whole ordeal somewhat frustrating.
At least around here, 770 and 780 wasn't that bad, maybe a week or two of low availability. 980 and in particular 970 was absolutely dreadful though. You couldn't really reliably get the more desirable AiB models of the latter in stock for months. (But at least in that case we know that it sold at unprecedented levels for a card in its range)

It sounds silly, but I'd hope that if nothing else the increased price level of 1070 at least leads to a faster normalization in that regard :P

And I agree that it's frustrating, especially if you need a GPU quickly for some reason.

I'm in the same boat. Got a 970 in November for 280€ but unfortunately it broke last week. Although Amazon gave me a full refund so maybe it was actually fortunate since I basically used it for half a year for free. Now I'd rather get the 1070 than another 970 but it's so expensive, the cheapest is 450€ at the moment. Hoping prices will go down as supply goes up.

980ti custom boards were pretty hard to get for a while too

guys i'm noticing a pattern with Gigabyte their stuff has come in stock at newegg around 6:30-7Pm EST everyday i've been tracking it. plus a 1 off for a 9am

If they are following a pattern the next re-opening will be at ~9am tomorrow then back to 6:30

I JUST WANT THE ASUS STRIX 1070 to be in stock already!!

Not just because I'm an ASUS fanboy or because of the overclock, but because the 2 HDMI ports on the back are perfect for me.

I want to wait for an AIB with a $379 version of a 1070 but I doubt thats ever going to happen, this is really frustrating seeing all the custom board partners pricing their cards around the FE...

I could just go to my local Best Buy and snag an FE 1070, as they are in stock and no one has bought any here where I live, but then I deal with the price markup, UGHHH

I honestly just want a card that's close to one of the best ones.

Gigabyte always seemed iffy to me, got one of their budget mobos once, was DOA. Rather buy from someone else.

I've never been a huge fan of their mobos for the same reason. On my first and second ever PC builds I used Gigabyte cause they were the best bang for your buck back then and they were both DOA. Nothing but good things when it comes to everything else though, especially their GPU's.

Currently staring at my deposit/back-ordered Gigabyte G1 from NCIX. Its a pretty hefty jump from an EVGA 770 2GB and the thirst is so real. Gotta wait 2-3 weeks apparently

I believe Gigabyte has a reputation of really cheaping out on their low end stuff, but their high end gear tends to be built quite well. I've heard few problems about Windforce GPU's, but their cheap mobo's would be rather shoddily made.

Wasn't the 970 ultra popular when it first came out? I don't remember that launch be anywhere near as bad as this. I picked up one in Australia close to launch for a $520.

Yes. It had a bit of issue when it was discovered that it wasn't s true 4GB card, but is still one of Nvidia's best cards. The GTX 970 was very available on launch. I didn't get what's going on with the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070's.

Nvidia rushed these cards out to beat AMD to market. It's also a new, immature process and yields aren't quite up to snuff.

I was finally able to look up my PSU. It's this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016 (Antec BP550 Plus 550W ATX12V V2.3)

According to the Newegg page it does not have an 8-pin connector, but could somebody tell me if that's correct and I really would need to get a new PSU with the 1070?

If so, what's a good brand? I paid $65 for that one back in 2011 and bought another one for another PC in 2013. Do most new ones come with 8-pins?

Edit: And I might be willing to settle for that lower-end Gigabyte. My current 760 is a Gigabyte with a 3-fan cooler. I don't think I've ever seen its temps go over the low 70's. I'm using a full tower with a lot of space though. Does that lower-end just mean a worse cooler or actually less horsepower?

I'll still wait for sub-$400 cards, but my time limit is probably early August. If prices are still around the FE then, then I'll have to settle for that or consider a 480.

It has an 8-pin connector, listed as 6+2. It also has a single 6-pin to go with it.

Yeah I just realized that when I looked back at the specs for my specific 760 -- says it requires a 6-pin AND and 8-pin, whereas the 1070 just requires the 8-pin.

And if I'm correct Gigabytes Windforce 1070 just overclocks less than the G1 right? I wasn't intending to OC anyway since I'm only using it for 1080p gaming. Maybe downsampling in cases where I have enough headroom.

Since RedSwirl brought up the connector subject: my PSU doesn't have any 8-pin connectors, just a single 6-pin. Is it safe to use a 2x 4-pin to 8-pin adapter? Like this one: adapter

thanks!

I could have sworn this damn card was supposed to be $379. what the fuck happened?

Yeah, it's terrible.
New MSI 970 Gaming can be had here for 1325 PLN (€300), and it's been steadily going down in price for the past few weeks.
New MSI 1070 Gaming will cost 2349 PLN (€530).
Considering the power difference between those two, 970 is actually a better deal. :\

I could have sworn this damn card was supposed to be $379. what the fuck happened?

They added a shitty blower card to start prices at $379. I don't remember that type of card for the 900 series. Then they added $20, $40 to all the other cards. Add in the jump in price from $349 to $379 and it seems a lot more expensive.

The Windforce has lower factory overclocks out of the box than the G1... maybe by 50~100Mhz? Need to check on the official specs. You can use the Gigabyte software or MSI Afterburner to clock it higher yourself.

The difference being the Windforce has 2 fans and the G1 3 fans, theoretically the G1 should keep things temps lower and more stable overclock, but a number of reviews now have said that the voltage is locked on the 1080/1070 cards and that the temps never get high enough to lower the clocks, so maybe 2 fans will be sufficient. Hard to be definitive until actual reviews come out.

Sorry. US Dollars.

Seriously? What the fuuuuuck happened to that $379 price? :(

Same thing that often happens: money. $379 is for the bare bones versions and those are not available yet because the better profit versions are selling as much as they can deliver. Plus some price gouging depending on retailer.

The FE should have been one of the $379 versions with great availability but Nvidia decided they want more money for themselves.

Except these money aren't for Nvidia, they are for the whatever boardmakers who sell the FE card. (Unless you buy the card directly from NV of course.)

So is it even worth waiting for a card like the MSI Gaming X to drop in price? It's $450 now, but considering it's overclocked and has a custom cooler, I wonder if that's just going to be the final price. Something like $400 would be a whole lot more palatable, but I don't know if that's a realistic expectation.

Damn it, 2 HDMI ports would be perfect for me as well, but the Asus card is even more expensive than the MSI card I was eyeing.

As an aside, does anyone know why are multiple hdmi ports so rare? Licensing costs?

I'm getting ready to build my first proper PC after about 6 years of laptop gaming, but I'm holding out on the 1070 being readily available before I pull the trigger.

I'm confused, though. Why are there so many different brands of 1070's? I thought it was just the NVidia Geforce GTX 1070, but when I browse newegg I see multiple brands and manufacturers for it. What are the differences?

The difference is mostly the fan/heat sink that sits on top of the board. Some also have slightly different clock speeds.
They are all the same GPU but they do perform slightly better or worse than others based on how they are clocked and how good they can get rid of the heat that is generated.

Just buy a DisplayPort to HDMI cable from amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C9P9TM/?tag=neogaf0e-20

4K 6ft cable 16 bucks, 10ft cable 18 dollars.

I'm guessing this would work but maybe it won't for your situation.

So by all accounts the EVGA ACX 3.0 is pretty good right? I'm hoping to get one of those because hey why not... it's the cheapest by 10 bucks.

nvidia provides the GTX 1070 chip and a reference design (on which most of the early 1070 cards are based on) to manufacturers.
So the actual cards can vary in clockspeed, fans, connectors, memory and more.
I'm currently waiting a few more months to see which cards from 1 or 2 manufacturers with the best quality and cost/value are filtered out.

People in here and some reviews might be able to tell you what model is a good choice to order right now.
