They added a shitty blower card to start prices at $379. I don't remember that type of card for the 900 series. Then they added $20, $40 to all the other cards. Add in the jump in price from $349 to $379 and it seems a lot more expensive.



The Windforce has lower factory overclocks out of the box than the G1... maybe by 50~100Mhz? Need to check on the official specs. You can use the Gigabyte software or MSI Afterburner to clock it higher yourself.

The difference being the Windforce has 2 fans and the G1 3 fans, theoretically the G1 should keep things temps lower and more stable overclock, but a number of reviews now have said that the voltage is locked on the 1080/1070 cards and that the temps never get high enough to lower the clocks, so maybe 2 fans will be sufficient. Hard to be definitive until actual reviews come out.

Probably gonna wait on Windforce reviews.

Might even just say fuck it and settle for an Aero.

The last true blower I had though was an 8800gt back in 2007. It was loud as hell, but it was also packed into a Dell case with a really weird motherboard and overall configuration that had some pretty poor air flow.

Basically my problem is with how both would compare in directx 12 titles and future driver support. I'm not quite on the VR wagon just yet so I don't have a need for performance gains there. I'm aware that the MSI gaming 980 ti can have pretty good performance gains from overclocking that put it above a 1070 oc at times which is great.

It's not that I can't use DisplayPort (I'm using it right now), I would just prefer HDMI.

Since you ask why DP - the current version of DP has more bandwidth and capability than HDMI. Everything HDMI can do, a DP port can do and more (i.e. you can plug in a DP -> HDMI cable and not lose anything) but the opposite is not true. You can't take an HDMI port and run a DP cable through it and not lose some capability (for example, the ability to run G-Sync). So by putting more HDMI ports on a card, the manufacturer is counting on your not running 3 x G-sync monitors, for example.

The 1080 averages about 20% faster most of the time and the price is about 55% higher. If you want the performance of the 1080 then go for it, but the 1070 is arguably the better value.

Keep in mind that while the 1070 is $450 right now, the 1080 is NOT $599. It's still mostly available at the $699 point and that will probably be the case for the near future.

You're definitely better refreshing unless you are DEAD SET on getting that specific model. It's really a crap shoot with when it could come in - could be tomorrow, could be end of July for all we know. If you have the money to spare temporarily I'd hold on to your order and then play the Newegg game. Worst case scenario you wind up getting an extra card sent your way which you could RMA

Since I've got the money, honestly that's probably what I'll opt to do. Keep an eye on my Amazon order status closely, but in the meantime see if I can snag one from Newegg or something to possibly get it in my hands quicker.

I think the 1070's may be pricing themselves out of usefulness.

When it's $380 for a 1070 and $600 for a 1080, the comparison is favorable for the 1070.

These 1070 custom boards at $450 vs a basic 1080 at $600... may make the 1080 a better buy.

My take is - no point paying for performance you don't really need, if money is an issue. The best cards always go for a premium. If you're happy to adjust settings down a bit, get the 1070. All these benchmarks are at ultra or very very high settings. There's about a $200 price difference. A worthy saving especially if you are considering upgrading again next time around.

Current gen VR requires GTX970 level of GPU as minimum, and the 1070/1080 are significantly faster than it, also being the latest tech.

They're claiming $250-$280 for the 8Gb version. You could get two and possibly be on par with a 1080 (in multi-GPU friendly games of course) if the latest 3DMark bench results are any indication.

Single card is always better, of course.

Yep, same here. Was really excited for the 1070, but the price and unavailability is turning me off. The 1070 ended up going from an instabuy to me seriously considering AMD's new offerings. I'm eager to see the benches of the 480 at the end of the month.

You're going to have to wait on those. Tinfoil hat here, but I think Nvidia is trying to keep the number of 1070 reviews low to maintain attention on the 1080. I haven't heard of a single YouTuber getting an aftermarket 1070 and only a few even got the FE, for example.

HDMI has a significant licensing cost. It's also designed for entertainment devices like TVs and receivers etc. It is not a computer display interface.
The two areas are similar but do not have identical requirements. So, for computer displays, DisplayPort is superior. Connecting your computer to a television is seen as a secondary use-case and so manufacturers are not going to prioritise HDMI connectivity over DisplayPort.

Well if you want to spend $400+ the 1070 is pretty good. Anything less I'd probably go for that new AMD card that looks amazing for the 200-250 range.

I think theoretically performance wise with a decent oc the msi 980 ti gaming is better even vs an oced 1070, for now at least. The MSI 980 ti oc headroom is just much higher ontop of it already being slighty oced out of box.

I could easily see the 1070 being lower in power consumption and temperatures though which is quite important for me.
