Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

i asked this question before in the 1080 thread and I want to actually ask it here for fair replies from both sides.

I used to have 980ti and i loved it but sold it before the 1080 announcement so I don't lose much value. Now i am torn between the 1080 and the 1070. what do guy honestly should i go for. right now i am gaming on 1080 but later this year i will upgrade to either 2k @ 144 or 4k..

part of me says go with the 1080 and stick with it till the new generation of cards ( not the 1080ti)

the other part says go with the 1070 because its almost 40% cheaper.

Also, is either the 1070 or the 1080 have defects like thermal issue, loud coil whine . overheating etc ?

In same boat also bought 4k monitor.

However, Digital Foundry did do a thing that shows on slightly older processors like the 2500k, faster RAM paired with a CPU overclock can raise you max FPS by almost 20, but that was mostly for already-high frame rates, like 100+.

I'm still running an OC'd 2500k... this is information that I didn't need to know. Guess I know what I'm buying on black friday.

What's the name of that site that lets you know as soon as there's a 1070 in stock somewhere? I'm hoping to get mind ordered tomorrow if possible.

I just cancelled my order with Nvidia.com, but every part of this is so nebulous. They are telling me the order has been processed, but the ship date was yesterday, even though they can't give me a tracking number and I haven't received a shipping notification. They said they requested cancellation but it might not go through. And if the cancellation does go through, they can't confirm for me when my refund will take place. So it's a good chance this is going to end up with me not being able to order a card for another week.

Anyone had experience ordering from Nvidia.com before? Seems like way more trouble than its worth compared to tried and true online retailers.

Virtually none.

So if you have 50 bucks to spare it's probably worth throwing in 16GB of 2133 MHz.

From the top of my head the new Tomb Raider, Quantum Break and Just Cause 3. RAM prices are so low right now that 16GB have become a must-buy.

Cool thanks. Guess i'm getting 16gb with my build later this year.

The 1080 is 20-25% faster than the 1070. The 1070 is about the same as a 980Ti. Do you want to get an upgrade over your 980 Ti or buy basically the same card again. I'm guessing you probably want an upgrade.

In same boat also bought 4k monitor.

You probably want the 1080 if you can afford it.

Amazon allowed me to order the Asus Stirx OC 1070 but the shipping date is not confirmed. The Graphics card is the last piece of my build i need!

Yeah I mean, it's a pretty non-emergency upgrade but you will definitely have some improvements with it. If you currently have 8 GB and are tapped out from the 1070 purchase, don't sweat it. That's the same position I'm in and I don't think it's going to stop me from enjoying the games I like for the time being. RAM is on the wish list but it can wait for now.

That's an "average FPS" test.

If you want to measure the impact of tight RAM then you should do a 99th percentile frame time and/or load times test.

Has anyone ever done such tests backed by benchmarks for a range of games? I'm sure you're right but I just couldn't find anything. Went on a big RAM-hunt after the DF video some months back but it's not something most hardware websites really put much effort into.

Well got a new PC built this week and it arrived yesterday.

Zotac FE 1070, i7-6700, 16GB HyperX FURY DDR4 2133MHz RAM.

It's a massive update from my prehistoric HD 6870 from 4 years ago.

Witcher 3 looks stunning in Ultra settings and the whole machine is really quiet.

Pleased I decided to upgrade now rather than a month or so ago and didn't miss out on the card.

You are dealing with Digital River. That's not good.

My local Microcenter is charging $519 for the EVGA ACX 3.0 1070. So much for us hitting that $400-$450 price tag on the AIB's.

Nowinstock.com

Thanks! Hopefully I can snag one tomorrow. If it doesn't turn out well I might just preorder on amazon and let it come when it will.

Edit: Woops, looks like it's a .net domain and not .com? Just as a heads up for anyone else looking to use the site.

Ahh my bad

Amazing how some of the Founders Edition cards are more expensive than the customs, aren't FE just stock cards?
I have a feeling the wait will be long for non-FE stock.

So the $380 price was a lie?

Manufacturers maximize early profits and people have no control over themselves. Can't blame companies really. My guess is Nvidia is probably taking a pretty healthy margin on that 380 price so now's probably the best time to charge extra and make up for that in the early weeks and months.

Well it's the MSRP. Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price.

There will always be cards that sell for more. Right now it's selling out at all price points. No incentive to sell for less.

The price was a lie. There'd have to be at least 1 product selling at that price somewhere to be truthful. There are NO cards at $380, or anywhere near it. Even that piece of shit blower that looks out of a 2008 bargain bin is $410.

I didn't expect cards to be $380 or even $410......but I thought AIB's would be at least $450. Looking around many are hovering in the $500 range. That is insane for a X70 based Nvidia card. I remember when I bought my 770 and I paid $420 for it which I can stomach, but not $500 which is what I had bought the 980 when I had that card.

So are the prices of the 1070 going to drop after the excitement of them calms down in the next few weeks and websites have large amount of stock or are these prices staying??

I have 2x4=8gb of 1600mhz.
Is it worth getting a fresh pair of 8gbb 2133 vs just getting more of what i have?

Definitely not in a few weeks. Maybe a few months. But even then I don't see the prices dropping much.

You have to consider that the $379 price is the base for a completely no-frills card. Manufacturers regularly upcharge from the base price for including their specialized coolers and other features.

MSRP is not something retailers have to abide by, they're raising prices because of the high demand and low supply. Prices will probably drop down closer to MSRP once things settle and the "Founders Edition" bullshit dies down.

Whatever RAM you get just make sure it all matches. I would advise against getting two different speeds and putting them in the same machine. So either get 8 more GB of the exact RAM you have or get new set of 2133 sticks. Probably won't be a huge difference.

Man what is Asus doing with the Strix 1070. They are nowhere to be found. Just a preorder on Amazon so far. All the other custom cards are out I wonder what's the hold up on the Strix. Maybe Asus just wanted to dump as many of the FEs before releasing it?

Exactly. Not really hard to understand. The $379 price is not a lie. There is nothing Nvidia can do about really.

Looks like 8gb more of the exact same would cost almost as much as a new 16gb.

I'll need to just double check that my mb supports 2133 and I'll probably jump on some. Maybe I can start leaving chrome open while gaming :p

Yup that is the one I am pretty set on also. Actually might get the non OC version of that same exact one for slightly less, seeing as they are identical and should OC the same, just no factory OC. At least that is what I gather.

This was my assumption as well and what I plan on doing. This card has serious OC potential.

I really don't know what to do but I'm getting some really awful performance from my EVGA 1070 SC. I know all of the benchmarks were done on new i7-6700K or other enthusiast level CPUs with different memory and what not so I can't make an apples to apples comparison to my i5-4690K but the games I've tried have just ran poorly. I've even ran DDU and re-installed drivers just to see if that would make a difference and nothing. I'm not using any OC on the card right now so this is all just on stock.

Rise of The Tomb Raider just runs as an awful, stuttery mess no matter the resolution or settings (drops down into the 20's for frames @1080p)...same for AC Syndicate...Witcher 3 won't even keep 60 FPS even without HairWorks enabled...The Division barely runs in the 40's

The only game I tried that didn't give me any issues was the DOOM demo but honestly that game will run on just about anything with no issues. This is all with a new G-SYNC monitor I got today.

If I can't figure out what's going on I'll have to call Newegg and see if they'll let me return the card or at least replace it. Again, I know my hardware isn't the top of the line or the best but I know the performance shouldn't be this bad. My PC shouldn't be causing this much of a performance gap. I'm getting nowhere near the performance I had anticipated.

If anyone has some advice on how I can get this figured out I'm all ears...first experience with NVIDIA cards and right now it's not positive...I really want to figure this out

My P8Z68 Motherboard features "memory and PCI Express controllers integrated to support 2-channel (4 DIMM) DDR3 memory and 16 PCI Express 2.0 lanes."

Does this mean it won't take full advantage of the memory on a 1070?

It seems it's at least only supporting DDR3 RAM, preventing that upgrade to 16GB DDR4 RAM I was about to go for.

That's bizarre. Your system should not be bottlenecked by that CPU at all.

I'm sure this isn't it, but the only thing I could think of is that you accidentally plugged your monitor into your integrated graphics instead of the video card. (Don't laugh, I've done it before.)

it's not...it's in the 1070

Would the 1070 be an upgrade from a 980? Don't really wanna pay the 1080 price...

As a 980 owner, I definitely want one. Problem is you can find 980Tis much cheaper than most 1070s now. Tempting given that they're fairly close in terms of performance, but who knows what'll happen when more games use DX12...

Latest drivers? Is the PCIe slot 2.0 or 3.0?

I also considered grabbing a 980Ti but it made more sense to get one of the newer cards. I have no problems with my EVGA 980 FTW but I can't help but want the upgrade haha.
