Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

I really don't know what to do but I'm getting some really awful performance from my EVGA 1070 SC. I know all of the benchmarks were done on new i7-6700K or other enthusiast level CPUs with different memory and what not so I can't make an apples to apples comparison to my i5-4690K but the games I've tried have just ran poorly. I've even ran DDU and re-installed drivers just to see if that would make a difference and nothing. I'm not using any OC on the card right now so this is all just on stock.

Rise of The Tomb Raider just runs as an awful, stuttery mess no matter the resolution or settings (drops down into the 20's for frames @1080p)...same for AC Syndicate...Witcher 3 won't even keep 60 FPS even without HairWorks enabled...The Division barely runs in the 40's

The only game I tried that didn't give me any issues was the DOOM demo but honestly that game will run on just about anything with no issues. This is all with a new G-SYNC monitor I got today.

If I can't figure out what's going on I'll have to call Newegg and see if they'll let me return the card or at least replace it. Again, I know my hardware isn't the top of the line or the best but I know the performance shouldn't be this bad. My PC shouldn't be causing this much of a performance gap. I'm getting nowhere near the performance I had anticipated.

---

If anyone has some advice on how I can get this figured out I'm all ears...first experience with NVIDIA cards and right now it's not positive...I really want to figure this out

Could you use the MSI afterburner overlay or GPU-Z logs to see if your card is boosting properly and what your temps are? Maybe it's not switching to boost clock for some reason or there's a cooler problem and it's throttling itself because it's too hot.

I also considered grabbing a 980Ti but it made more sense to get one of the newer cards. I have no problems with my EVGA 980 FTW but I can't help but want the upgrade haha.

Same. Got the 980 in February (flash sale, great price) and I love it, but the 1070 is just crying out for me to grab it!

My P8Z68 Motherboard features "memory and PCI Express controllers integrated to support 2-channel (4 DIMM) DDR3 memory and 16 PCI Express 2.0 lanes."

Does this mean it won't take full advantage of the memory on a 1070?

It seems it's at least only supporting DDR3 RAM, preventing that upgrade to 16GB DDR4 RAM I was about to go for.

You'll get 99% of the performance (all other things being held constant), there's hardly any difference.

What CPU/speed?

Great, thanks!

I have a 2500k CPU.

From what I've heard, that should be okay for now?
It sounds like most people overclock them though. I bought it for it's great OC ability but mounted the heatsink twice and never got it below the edge of barely comfortable load temps though, so it's still stock at the moment.

Tried Witcher 3 and ROTTR again to check the GPU-Z log thing...somehow ROTTR has locked itself to only running in the 20's no matter what I do while Witcher seemed like it ran fine as far as the clocks went

the highest temperature in Witcher 3 was 73 degrees

I'm throwing up my hands here now...honestly no idea what to do

---

edit: rebooted my PC and ROTTR at least runs not locked but the performance is still bad and as far as I can see from the logs it's not having an issue with the clocks not working or the temperature being too high

the core clock goes in the 1800's - 1900's and the memory clock stays at the max...temperature gets to about 72 or 73...all on stock settings (no OC or manual fan settings)

The 2500k is still quite potent. You'd gain a fair bit though by overclocking it. What are your load temps like? Did you have trouble applying the thermal paste? What cooler are you using?

tried Watch Dogs and still poor performance...won't even keep near 60 FPS on High at 1080p (not even any of the Ultra settings are on)

I'm probably just going to have to call Newegg tomorrow and see what can be done...I don't know what else to do and don't know why I'm having such awful performance with my card

this is ridiculous...even at 1080p and that's something this card should have no problems with

Can you try running 3dmark firestrike and posting your results here?

Yeah honestly unless you've done something terribly wrong in terms of setting the card up (which it certainly sounds like you haven't) it seems like you just got a stinker. I would try to get it exchanged.

You plugged in the power connectors right? You probably did, but I was real dumb once when installing a graphics card and forgot to do that.

Your physics (CPU) score seems low for some reason. Have you installed all the latest drivers for your motherboard? (edit: I see you're at 1080p).

Overclocking your CPU at all?

The graphics score looks good, so my guess is you are CPU limited at 1080p with that setup. But, it should be performing better. What are the CPU clocks and temperatures when gaming (see afterburner logs)?

The graphics score is totally fine but your CPU-bound stuff is crazy low. Way too low for the processor you have. Something is up.

EDIT: Here's a comparable system to yours: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8802396

Your CPU score is less than half of what it should be.

Keep in mind the 4690k you linked is at 4.8GHz.

Nyteshade I would overclock your CPU if you haven't already and see how things change (after checking on the driver stuff).

Hmm that actually might be worth checking. I did the same thing with my first card which required 6-pin connection.... The behavior was very similar.

I have the onboard graphics disabled in the Device Manager but it keeps showing up in the Fire Strike results...would that be making my performance so bad? (there's no video cord going to the onboard graphics and never has)

it's plugged in...it's an 8-Pin connector and I'm using a 6+2 (previous card was a 290X and that was an 8-Pin & 6-Pin connector)

not overclocked on my CPU

what drivers for my motherboard should I be checking? (it's a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI)

Your GPU score is fine, so don't worry about the onboard showing up.

What BIOS version is your motherboard on? I would install (or reinstall) the chipset drivers from the Gigabyte page for your mobo. What CPU temperatures are you getting? It's possible but unlikely there was a problem setting up the cooler and it's overheating/throttling.

Your CPU is basically not boosting at all and it should be going to at least 3.9GHz out of the box from what I can tell. Something on your board is probably throttling you.

I'm on F9...newest BIOS on the Gigabyte page is F10b (a beta BIOS)

the Chipset thing on the downloads page has 2 entries (Intel Management Engine Interface and Intel INF installation)...what do I do to install those?

I've never done that (this PC was built for me so I'm completely dumb to what that is)

Where is everyone finding cheaper 980 ti's? The cheapest I can find are $500+, whereas the 1070 is $429 (Gigabyte). I must be looking in the wrong places.

I think there is something wrong with my CPU as far as temps go...even just rebooting the PC and having nothing running except HWMonitor to see the temps and it was in the 50's and 60's doing nothing...f***

only change I've made is just putting in this 1070 and replacing the blower style 290X I had before...guess my CPU cooler is messing up and I'll have to get it replaced

Yeah, those temps are way too high if your CPU is truly idle. It might be as simple as removing and replacing the CPU cooler if you feel like getting your hands dirty.

see your Task Manager, and see whether any app is using your CPU
also try using GPU-Z again to check if your PCI-Express really running at 3.0 at load

How do I see what it is at load?

on GPU-Z it alternates between 1.1 and 2.0...wtf?

What do I do to change that?...I apologize if I sound like a complete idiot about all of that stuff

edit:...nm...I did the render test thing in GPU-Z and it was running at 3.0 under that load

ok...now my CPU is in the 70's and 80's for temps and all I've done is check that GPU-Z thing and just Chrome for checking GAF...I'm stopping before I cause any permanent damage...will have to get the CPU looked at as soon as I can

What video card did you have before? Did it get expected performance? If so, it sounds like you may have knocked your cooler loose or something.

Do you know what cooler is on it? All it probably needs is a reapplication of the thermal paste. But yeah, if someone else set it up for you you could talk to them. That is definitely why you're having issues in games.

It was a reference blower style 290X before... It got expected performance

As far as the cooler on it now I think it's an Asetek (?) AIO cooler...I know it's the Summer now so the temperature in the house is warmer but not by much compared to normal, certainly not enough to make that massive of a leap in CPU temps

If you have any thermal paste around I would let the cpu cool for a bit then take it off and reapply. I had my i7 start getting hot about two weeks ago, very similar to yours, idling in the mid 50's instead of about 35. Took it apart, cleaned the old grease off, put some new on and it did just fine!

You don't have to worry about damaging it from heat, it will shut off before it gets hot enough to damage it. But that is definitely your problem. Do you clean your case out with any frequency or at all? I have seen systems before that where they are located just get a ton of dust inside and the owners never cleaned it out before and the dust was causing a huge thermal build up and not allowing the cpu to cool.

Do you have anything installed to monitor fan speed?

inside of the PC has been cleaned out recently so I don't think that is an issue but I will check tomorrow...I have the fans set on maximum in the BIOS so they are going as fast as they can

Already ordered a Palit Jetstream 1070 in my country , can't really wait for the rx480 already . I'm coming from r9 280x , personally think 480 isn't enough of an upgrade and my card's value dropping by day .

Its $489 for the 1070 but the 480 isn't cheap here as well , costing $318 . So I guess leaning to 1070 would be better at that price point . My most expensive purchase since AMD x800pro .

try checking the heatsink, and thermal paste.
maybe the heatsink got loose or thermal paste gone dry

RX480 already released at your place?

Had some issues getting Win 10 to recognize mine tonight. Installed the drivers no problem, but upon a restart, Win 10 claimed I didn't have anything installed. Even the device manager didn't show it. Did a re-seat in the other PCI-E slot and now it magically works. Whatever.

What happened was that when you removed your GPU w10 installed a camera in the pci-e slot and once that was done it would allow your card to sit

With UK leaving the EU could the prices get even worse, or could they actually get better? Even with the crappy prices I'm wondering if it might be good to stop waiting and grab a 1070 before the aftereffects kick in.
