Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

a) you have the performance headroom

b) it's the best AA solution, bar none. Most post-processing AA leaves plenty of visible aliasing, downsampling helps reduce this and stabilize the image. Here's a comparison between 1080 native and 4k downsampled to 1080 - big difference which is even bigger in motion.

Obviously playing at native res is still viable if you need the performance, but if you can afford it, there are appreciable benefits to downsampling to 1080p from higher resolutions.

Oh shit that IS a difference. Very interesting to see, thanks

Still i will always favour even a minor fps advantage before IQ

Should I be bummed my FE seems to only be able to do 8700-8800mhz memory stable? Seeing reviews and people doing 9400mhz is crazy. My core does +200 and hangs above 2000mhz so I guess that's good, but it seems like pretty much all pascals can do that?

9000-9400mhz memory would increase bandwith, I dunno though, could be that's pretty rare.

My girlfriend just text me a photo of my Gaming X, new power supply and two new case fans. Ugh this is going to be a long day.

My Noctua NH D-14 dual heatsink arrives tomorrow. Going to try to push my 3570k to 4.4ghz.

Just got a response back from EVGA that the SC's will be in stock later this week and that the FTW is super limited quantity. So for every 25 SC cards there is one FTW. No word on retailers getting any of that allocation though. Which is what I was waiting to hear because I'd like to get mine from Amazon.

That's exciting news. I have an SC backordered on Newegg. Hopefully their shipments include me.

Thanks for the info!

Gigabyte 1070 Windforce has shipped! Newegg.ca, but apparently shipping from the US.

Probably from California, my card is shipping from there as well. Won't be here until Thursday in NYC, so it gives me time to run a suite of benchmarks so I can do a comparison between my current 2GB GTX 770 and the 1070.

I might shed a tear when I can just load up Crysis 3 with every setting on max and just go nuts. Then I'll shed another tear because Crysis 3 is kinda ass.

I have to ask this because the OCD in me is killing me.

are there any 1070 and 1080 without a coil whine ( even faint coil whine ) issue ?

when I say faint I mean you have to turn off your AC, mute your TV. put your eat close to the OPENED case you have. and keep switching between desktop and the game to hear if your card emitting a slight buzzing sound ?

I kinda have this issue and while I know its harmless, Its driving me crazy.

I can only hear a slight humming on my 1070 FE if I put my my head right next to my case.

Yes well , that is the coil whine lol. I am not really sure why I am annoyed like I honestly cant hear it. I don't have to put headphones or anything. only if I am close to my case on my knees like some idiot having a doggy style.

I mean for fucks sake my Razer chroma keyboard making a buzzing sound when the lights are on and I don't give a shit. but for this card I do.

its just the fact that some other guy paid the same amount I paid and he has no noise card kinda mentality lol. why not me I paid the same lol

When I exit the heaven benchmark I could severely hear the coil whine from my 970. My MSI 1070 Gaming barely had a pitch. YMMV, but the card was a solid winner for me at that point.

Ive been thinking about getting a 1080 to replace my 970, but the 1070 price tag is so much more appealing. Is the 1070 a worthy upgrade from the 970 at 1440p?

Yes. the 1070 is better than 980ti which run well on 2k screens. However I went with the 1080. I am not really sure why I did. I mean, the current prices for 1080 is around 800$. that's 2 1070 on SLI. while many people don't recommend it. 1070 sli is way more powerful than a 1080.

It's about a 60-70% increase in performance for 400+ dollars. That's not a great price/performance value, but in terms of raw performance I'd consider that a worthwhile upgrade.

Well, I'd call that very faint coil whine, which is what you asked about.

My 980 ti in my big rig is faster than 1070 in my ITX rig. Stock for stock a 1070 might be better, but oc vs OC I would think 9/10 times the 980 ti is faster. You do lose 2gb of vram though.

Paul's hardware video that illustrates even a reference model ocd 980 ti is a fair bit better than an msi 1070 gaming x in oc mode.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IgiSRnLgbkw

In terms of synthetic benchmarks my g1 980 ti does 21000+ firestrike graphics score easily, and my ocd to the bone 1070 cannot even 20000, max so far is 19700.

All FE models are essentially the same so coil whine should be the same across all of them. I have the Nvidia packaging FE and I only get coil whine at really high frame rates. I have a 60Hz monitor and always play with vsync, so it's not an issue for me personally.

Regarding newegg canada, I wonder how the CP strike is going to disrupt things. I ordered a 1070 last week and there seems to be some confusion as to if they're shipping with purolator or CP or...

Will we be seeing the 1070 overtake the 980 Ti in new games as time goes on and more driver updates are released for Pascal? IIRC something similar happened with the 780 Ti vs. 970 last generation.

This thing shreds anything that comes before it. 150-200fps in Battlefield 4 maxed out, render scale set to 135%, 1080p.

It seemed to be running hot initially. Idling at 51c, hitting 70c in games, but now it's down to 40c and dropping while idle.

It is practically touching my hard drives in this case, so i had to rest an 80mm case fan against an opening on the back of my case directly underneath the GPU. Don't want my hard drives to fry.

Will a CPU fan lower temps? I have this arriving tomorrow: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018

Yea I was going to buy a 1070 but then decided against it based off the strength of this video and I came across a msi gaming 980 ti for $400 flat. I was able to OC this card to 1480mhz on the core and 7800mhz on the memory without touching the voltage or power limit and changed the thermal paste to gelid extreme which dropped the idle temps by 10 and 8 on load. I'm sure later down the road the 1070 will pull ahead based off driver optimizations but I wouldn't think it would put it too far ahead.

It's more like 45-55% when both are overclocked though.

My Zotac 1070 AMP is out for deliveryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I need it nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I don't even have a date, a week, or a month or anything on mine. But then again I knew that when I ordered it so nothing's really changed.

PS. Integrated intel graphics are shit, no matter what anyone says.

Of course they are. They're meant for basic 3D acceleration, not heavy gaming.

Yay.

I know, but everytime a new processor family comes out AMD and Intel tout how much stronger their integrated GPU's are.

At some point you'd think they at least show up on the radar, so to speak.

Installed my Gigabyte G1 on Sunday into the older of my two PCs. I have an i7 4790k in the front room and a i5 2500k attached to the projector in by theater room (not overclocked as I stupidly bought a non-overclocking MB at the time).

Fully intend to bring the i7 into the other room, but need to run ethernet cable first (urgh).

Stuck it in the i5 just to see how it runs, and it's incredible even in there (although I'm coming from a 760, so it's quite the leap for me, maybe not for those on a 970 or 980), so I'm in no huge hurry to make the switch now - will probably wait until the next big AAA comes out to do that - although the i5 does have a tendency to lock up when left idle for a while, not quite sure what that's about.

Absolutely silent from my sitting position, I can see the fan stop light is on a good proportion of the time, even when playing the less intensive games, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Stupid amazon.de has just a couple of gtx1070 in stock at outrageous prices :/

whats the consensus on the best 1070 build out there? Asus or Gigabyte?

May need to buy one from the US instead of waiting for .de to stock up, sucks because i got like 150€ in my account burning to be used on a nice gtx :D

i'm a fan of the MSI ones. it seems they are the only ones with 6+8 pin connectors so maybe better OC'ing? out of those two though i'd probably go with a gigabyte.

Installed a EVGA Founders edition, replaced my old GTX680 and man, it's a very noticeable upgrade. Witcher 3 runs very smooth now on ultra and I can finally play Batman!

I went Gigabyte but based on what I've read, I'd avoid them since they have terrible customer service.
