Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Frig, my order got delayed in BC so now I won't have the card until next Wednesday / Thursday grrrr friggen Canada Post... I was looking forward to using it this weekend.

changed power management mode to prefer maximum performance in nvidia control panel?
 
Oh I love my small GTX 1070 Mini. I oced the card a bit (+95 / +300). Don't know if it's the maximum. But it run's like hell. Tomb Raider with 4x SSAA looks so awesome.

I was playing a game and saw, in GPU-Z, that the core-clock is hitting 1999.5Mhz (effectively 2Ghz). But I havent overclocked it at all. It is a Zotac AMP extreme with following specifications-
Base: 1632 MHz
Boost:1835 MHz

So it should never cross 1835MHz, right? But it is touching 2GHz on its own. I dont get it.

That's just boost 3.0 doing its thing. my stock evga SC was boosting over 1900mhz stock as well. no reason to be worried. just make sure the temps look fine when at those speeds. I ended up using my own fan curve to keep the card cooler.

Yes its a good version. its one of the cards people were telling to wait for. Will overclock (is already overclocked a little from the get go by Gigabyte itself).

Thanks man. But how does boost 3.0 work? If boost clock is 1833, how is it going beyond that too?
The temps seem fine. It never crosses 63degrees.

honestly not sure how it works. I think it boosts until it hits certain. limits within the card or temps. Don't know for sure, but most every 1070 should boost to around 2000mhz. above that is all silicon lottery.

thank you - does anyone know what these weigh? trying to get an estimate for cost of shipping but I can't find what the package or card weighs anywhere...
 
I am a huge fan of AMD and their cards but I've decided to go for a 1070. It has the performance I'm looking for since I game at 1080p/120+ Hz and would like to do that with high/max settings. Unfortunately, the Fury X is disappointing in that regard. I'll see what AMD is working with once Vega arrives.

What versions of the 1070 would you guys recommend?
 
Knew this would happen. I got my card today, spent forever dusting out my PC and then go to install the card only to see my PSU doesn't have enough slots for the provided power cables. Needs 4, my modular PSU only has 2. Is there anything I can do? It's a corsair hx650. Does the 1070 FTW really need 4 connectors on the PSU or is there some sort of cable splitter I can use?

The FTW needs 2x8 pins. It's excessive really as I have the SC version of the card that has only 1x8 pin and does the same clocks as ftw models. Not really sure what the extra needed power is needed really. These cards don't seem to be power limited.
 
Yeah guess I really should have cracked open my case and actually looked before buying instead of going off memory.

Too bad there aren't any decent places to buy a PSU around here. Unless Best Buy has something. Can't really tell though. Browsing on a bad tablet sucks. My computer is all torn apart and I don't really want to put it back together if I have to swap the PSU.

EDIT: Might buy the corsair cx750m from best buy I guess. It looks like it should work, though the picture is too small to make sense of how I'd connect my drives to it power wise...

Did your card come with converter cables? Maybe you can use them.

There are, but they require four six pin connectors from the PSU. My PSU only has two. I'm trying to find a PSU at best buy but not really seeing anything. There is one that looks like it might work but I'm not completely sure. It's really hard to judge things on this tiny tablet off tiny pictures. I really don't want to have to waste this entire weekend but I might just have to wait until next week.

I spend a couple of hours looking up best buy PSU options online after realizing I need a new one. I find nothing wrong with the one I decide to go with in that time; highly rated, it's the same brand as what I had before, has all the connections I need. I go buy it and do another quick search on it after I get home and suddenly I'm finding all kinds of shit wrong about it. "Bargin basement quality" "failed on me in the worst way". "Lower quality components" Ugh. Never saw those posts before I bought it.

Maybe I should just package the card and PSU up and say screw it and return everything. I can't afford to have a PSU fail on me and take my entire system with it. Though I'm not sure if Amazon will take the gpu back since its been opened and installed, but never turned on.

Really wish I had better choices for locally bought parts.

And all this is super off topic now and starting to get unrelated to the topic so I guess I'll probably stop posting about it here. It's just frustrating.

If the psu works you will likely be fine, worst case can you return the psu to bestbuy and then order one from say Newegg or amazon if it flakes out?

TBH, I doubt the card will actually make use of all the additional power over the other versions.

I guess my PSU is specifically called the Professional Series. It's an older one, I'm not really sure if it's for sale anywhere despite being listed on their website. Here's a picture:

Basically, it only has 2 6-pin connections on it. The rest are flat 5-pin connectors. Since the 1070 FTW needs 2 8-pins my only options were 2 8-pins from the PSU, or 4 6-pins (the adapters that come with the card are this). My PSU has no 8-pins and only 2 6-pins.

There ARE 6-pin to 8-pins that came with my old PSU, but I'm assuming that won't provide enough power for the card. The box specifically says it needs 2 8-pins or 4 6-pins.

Either way, I ordered an EVGA PSU off Amazon, one of the ones recommended in the GAF PC build thread. Thanks to Sunday delivery I'll still get to play with my card this weekend. Upgrading my PSU was going to be something I had to do anyway, since I'm hoping to do a CPU/MB/RAM upgrade in the next year so this isn't that big a deal. I was more just upset at myself that I didn't properly find this out ahead of time. It's not something I normally overlook.
 
Since I was still within the 30 day return policy I swapped out my EVGA SC which I paid $449 for the EVGA FTW since it went on sale at Microcenter for $429. Hopefully the FTW is a better overall card. I didn't have any issues with the SC, but for $20 cheaper felt like it was a no brainier. I just barely fit the FTW in my 250D.

How have the FTWs been performing and is anyone regretting getting this card?

Would the MSI X been a better choice? Do you guys know if the height of the 1070 Gaming X is the same as their 970 card?
 
Finally these cards are going towards sane pricing, cheapest from Germany seems to be 419 euros which is more of what I expected.
Guess I'll give it month and then it's time to update my GTX 780.
Must be my 3rd time asking but there haven't been any official word on Non-FE stock cards yet?
 
What's a (faily cheap) game that can really utilize the 1070s graphics?
I already played doom on PS4, the witcher 3 is still pricey and I own it for PS4. Skyrim isn't too bad, but I assume you need mods to get the mind blowing graphics you see all the time. Ive played most AAA multiplats on the PS4 already. How's Soma look?
The new Deus ex seems like it will look good when it comes out.

It's meant for more serious over clocking using a custom bios which will allow you to increase the voltage

Crysis 3 is still a tough test for GPU's and it's on sale for 5ish bucks pretty often. Modded to the gills Skyrim would also be a good test, the base game would not. Shadow of Mordor and Metro Redux are also on sale pretty often for around 10 bucks and are standard benchmarks for GPU performance.
 
So say I was looking to build a PC in about 6 months time - which is the smarter choice, the 1070 or 1080? What's the price gap like (GBP)? And considering I'd mostly be using a GPU for 3D modelling and rendering/IPR, which is more suitable?

On phone and with limited internet right now, so assistance is greatly appreciated!
 
Just ordered a Gigabyte GTX 1070, going from a AMD 7850 is gonna be insane, can't wait to try it out. I feel I overpaid at $429 but I really wanted to get a new GPU before Deus Ex and all the other big games this fall.
 
I've been deliberating on which Gpu to get for ages and I just said fuck it and bit the bullet on a Zotac 1070 Amp.

£400 is the most I spent on a single component for my PC by quite some margin, but in the end didn't see much point in going for a 1060/480 as some of those are pushing £300 as it is.

Managed to solve the issue. Enabled in-game v-sync and the micro stutter went away.
I've always thought the whole point of using borderless windowed mode was to avoid having to use in-game v-sync, that and alt tabbing quickly.

That was my train of thought too, I was keen on getting a RX 480 but with the prices now I might as well have spent the extra and got the 1070.

I dipped on that 399€ Gainward dual fan version, feels like lot of money towards GPU but I'm hoping the games will make up for this feeling.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone :P Yeah the thought of being able to downsample anything and everything in the near future is ecstatic :D And I hope I can run Final Fantasy 14 in 4k downsampled!
