Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Strix is definitely better. The dual version is supposed to be the cheaper option in ASUS lineup, I think? Kinda like MSI's Gaming and Armor lineup.

Appreciate the heads up. Looks like I can get it Saturday as well. Was thinking about the gigabyte but I currently have no card and weekends are my only days off so better to get it now.

Pulled the trigger, should arrive on Saturday.

Is the GTX 750TI LP gonna be replaced soon? I need a low profile grfxcard upgrade and have been waiting patiently! Anything on the horizon?

Got to finally install my gigabyte g1 tonight.
Tested it shortly. Of course with my dumb luck I got one with heavy coil whine.
This is the first time I ever hear such a sound. Wow I can't believe this is something gigabyte would consider normal.
That high pitched buzz is driving me mad. Imagine having a fly close to your ears at all time.

I'm considering RMA. But it took almost 2 weeks waiting on shipment. I don't want to wait a month for a replacement...

This was noticed in some of the early reviews for the Gigabyte, I think. Why I didn't jump on that $350 jet deal, although now I hear the MSI's are prone to faultiness...

Either he's unfortunate or I'm very lucky, Had my G1 for about 4-5 weeks now and I have zero coil whine in any games or bench, vsync or no vsync. After a few updates to the xtreme utility I'm very happy with my card now. 1440p is a breeze for this thing. I've also really enjoyed 4K with it, either ultra capped at 30fps or high settings for 60fps. It's a monster and that's coming from a 970.

Which good model doesn't have the possibility of coil whine? Heard it was an issue in other cards, too.

Almost settled on a G1 but don't want to risk coil whine.

I have to say apart from the coil whine in very specific games when the card is pushed, everything else has been working flawlessly. I'm now considering noise cancelling headphones to eliminate the problem.
It is a poor fix but it's either that or be without a card for a month.

Try contacting Gigabyte. They may have some set aside for replacements.

Pushed my Palit gamerock over 350 fps and it was perfectly silent. My previous card all had coil whine at such an high framerate.

So just installed my Gainward, let Windows install the 369.09 drivers as they seem newest and ran some benchmarks. 3DMark Time Spy gave me 1800 for some reason (2551 with GTX 780), if anyone knows the reason for this let me know.
Dark Souls 3 now ran stable 60fps at 1440p, which is a upgrade and SteamVR:

No idea why it dips at one point and isn't 11 to be honest, I tried Maximum Performance and Optimal Power modes but no luck, could it be driver issue? I'd assume that's why 3DMark was so low too.

Idles at 45C with fan turned completely off, during benchmarks it went up to 77C at highest with fan at 56%, yet to try in normal gaming on it but I'd assume it won't be an issue.
Even at high load the card was very quiet, I can't hear it from inside my Antec P280 and my build is almost noiseless.

I'm glad I went green.

Yeah that is a bit odd.

Which Gainward card did you get?

77C on a custom cooler seems pretty high for a 1070. Mine's idling at 37C, and just hit 67C max on the benchmark. This is in a 25C room temp.

My VR results is the same as above.

Congratz, I'm glad you liking it the same as I do! :D I can't help you with TimeSpy, this is really odd o.o Aside from that my Palit does get hot aswell yet is also very quiet at all times. Only thing is that this zero-fan technology when idle doesn't work on mine. I heard there was a BIOS update for it that resolves it but honestly I don't hear the card even with the fans spinning at 20% because my Define R4 is a noise-cancelling case anyway. Let's enjoy the green! :)

Kudo and I have a seemingly identical card, mine being a Palit DUAL which is supposedly built from the same parts. My 1070 can reach 80°C if I push it hard but even then I don't even notice the noise outside of a faint "whirl" in my case which is perfectly fine by me. I saved 30€ by going with it and I honestly don't regret it even if it comes with the cheapest custom-cooler available.

This one http://www.gainward.com/main/vgapro.php?id=987&lang=en
It was the cheapest, feels very light so I'd assume the cooler isn't that great but at least it's better than the stock one.

Yeah, just wondering since I have a Palit Jetstream and a lower temperature, but since it's the Palit/Gainward Dual version I guess that's the norm.

And what's your driver version? There is a DPC Latency bug on the Pascal card. you can try this hotfix and see if it makes a difference in the dip on the VR test.

That's the driver I'm using currently.

Currently running the 369.09 that comes through Windows Update, it seems to work normally in games so I guess it should be fine, 3DMark did say that the driver is not verified so possibly something with that.
Might try the benchmarks again later when they release 370 drivers, but as long as there's no problems doing anything else I'm happy.

And yes, Jetstream/Phoenix is probably lot heavier than what we have, no backplate either but I think under 77 in heavy use is good for me, GTX 1070 starts to throttle at 82C right?

Yeah no backplate felt a bit weird coming from my 7970, I guess this is also why the card feels so light. And same here, does it though? I have to keep that in mind then during hot summer-days and adjust the fan manually a bit.

Yup, 82-83C. Higher temps will affect boost 3.0 so your clock speeds in game might not be as high as other cards with lower temperature, but with a higher fan curve, and maybe even a bit of overclock can compensate that, if you ever need a little bit of performance.

369.09 is higher and probably already includes the DPC latency fix. But personally I wouldn't be comfortable using a driver from windows update. If there's a new driver for the upcoming No Man's Sky release you can try installing it and see if it fixes the benchmarks if you care enough about it :D

Alright I can finally buy one of these. The question is which do I get? I need help GAF I am a complete noob at all this stuff.

Yesterday got my EVGA GTX 1070 FTW Gaming ACX 3.0
Really great card, quiet and fast. Here is my 3dmark score in Time Spy: 5792
I'm really satisfied with performance of my PC system now.

Found a retail store with a gigabyte g1. Decided to bite. I can return if coil whine is too much.

Fingers crossed

I hope you get lucky. It is really an awful sound. I thought the rumors were making it worse than it actually is. Turns out it is all too real.
Still, the card is a beast. Best of luck to you.

Thanks. Installed. Everything seems OK but I need to check temps.

Ran the time spy benchmark and got 5,407 (6,047 GPU). Not a whisper. At what point does coil whine kick in usually?

So my friend sent me a link for a 1070 from NeweggBusiness, is he able to just buy it from there or is there something that you have to go through (Like being an actual Business)

Mine is making coil whines in very specific scenes of particular games.
I guess you have to throw something very heavy at it. The worst was actually in WoW of all games. I'm playing at 1440p but x4 that resolution downsampled. That makes the card work at 100% most of the time. Well even then, it will make the sounds in very specific places in the game. But at those places, I can make the card "sing" every times.

With the 1070 FTW being priced lower again on NewEgg gotta stay strong and wait at least another month or so to see if it goes down more and if game pairings start which I imagine we might start hearing about by mid to late September... Not like I'm that desperate for a new GPU or anything but the temptation is there.

ASUS GeForce 8GB Dual-Fan OC Edition

ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG STRIX Graphic Card (STRIX-GTX1070-8G-GAMING)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HEQYQHA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Anyone have a clue which is better? The strix has a backplate. Doesn't look like the dual fan does. That would be a deal breaker for me. Anyone know anything more about them? I'm not worry about boost clocks I can PC it myself if need be.
The firts one is great option if your rig is all white for example, but... there's also white KFA2 HOF which is better and it has 3 fans. As for ROG Strix, this one is a really cool card in terms OC (at least in my case), cooler design and LED lighting, I've Strix one myself and I really liking it =)

I'm still investigating that news about Samsung/Micron memory and it's relation to the gtx 1070.

From what I'm reading, shortage on Samsung brand might have forced Nvidia and partners to get their memory modules from Micron.

What I'm still researching is whether there is a correlation between stuttering problem reported on the gtx 1070 and the Micron memory configuration.

These things are real. I have now been plagued by both coil whine and stuttering on my gtx 1070.

Whens the ITX sized Gigabyte (or any other ITX 1070) actually coming out? None of these cards fit my case.
I think I've seen zotac amp! Itx size available.
Check PCPartPicker for the zotac mini.

Edit : scratch that I'm confusing the 1070 with another model.
You were right it is indeed gigabyte that offers itx sized 1070. Haven't found it in stock sorry.

I do like Zotac (currently using a 9" Zotac 970)... I might just have to switch to a different ITX case that supports full size card.

Congratz enjoy it, I love mine! :D

On another note, could someone maybe help me out with Custom Resolutions? It's my first nVidia card since 2005 :P

I found out that DSR and Custom Resolutions aren't possible at the same time, which I thought is no problem but I stumbled over a small roadblock:

I added the following custom entries:

1920x1080@74hz for general usage as my monitor can do 74hz
2560x1440@60hz for 1440p downsampling

Then I tried 3840x2160@60hz for 4k downsampling which just gives me black flickering, if I however enable 4x DSR it works no problem o.o The thing is once I disable DSR I lose access to my 74hz 1080p resolution, could anyone help me correctly setting 4k as a custom resolution?

GeDoSaTo's latest version is also completely out of order and whenever I try to grab older builds from GitHub they don't even start :/

On my monitor I was able to force proper DSR by creating a fake hard native resolution for the monitor. I used Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) by ToastyX. There is a quick guide in the link.

Basically DSR works off your monitors native resolution, so custom resolutions only work if you trick Nvidia into thinking custom rez = native rez. CRU lets you force and change custom native resolutions so you can downsample from anything to anything your monitor supports.

Picked the Strix, right out the box, in gaming mode, it hits 1868 on the core clock. 2021 in oc mode, 57 degrees. That ain't bad at all. You guys are scaring me with this Micron stuff though, just pulled up GPU-z and I do have micron memory.

This is of particular interest to me. I have a 1080p tv but I would like to downsample to 720p in some games for passive 3D. Quick start guide gives some hope but I'm not quite sure. Needs to work in full screen mode.

Yes. The reference design 1070s will fit in my case where the MSI would not.

Just barely, but the cheaper ASUS Turbo with the blower style cooler fits in my Dell Precision case. I'm new to OCing with the Asus software, it's a bit confusing with the boost stuff. Anyway, out of the box I scored a respectable 14094 in Firestrike and then using the Asus Tweak II I was able to get 14788. I can get more out of it, but I'm too sleepy to continue messing with it. Temps stay in the low 80s and under with default fan profile. With quick tweaking I could keep it in the high 70s pretty easily when OC'd. Not bad for a blower in a tight case.

Card has some coil whine, but only if you are using more aggressive fan curves. If you use the default it isn't bad at all while doing heavy gaming. You hear it, but it isn't loud enough to bother me. Still quieter than my GTX760 was. It's silent when doing anything but heavy gaming.

Hit over 1500 safely and quietly.
Very happy with this card.

I had to enable in-game v-sync to be rid of frame pacing issues since the NCP was completely useless in handling the matter.

Btw any FTW owners with micron memory?

I'm done with the paranoid stage. I saw a reddit page dedicated to 3dMark benchmarks and saw that my score is normal. I've been playing Rise of the Tomb Raider over the weekend and the game runs smooth on highest settings with Pure Hair at 1080p; game doesn't dip below 60 fps. I have the Asus Strix and I haven't encountered any coil whine or unnecessary noise.

Just ordered an Asus Strix 1070 OC edition on eBay for $440 after shipping. That's generally a good price right? I wasn't sure of the exact msrp, but I kept seeing it sell for around $449-469 at retail.

Nah, I bought mine for $450 shipped on Amazon a long time ago. I'm happy paying $10 more to get it from a legit seller on a legit marketplace.
