Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

We do it for fun and to get the most out of the card, not for actual performance boosts... Well, at least for bad overclockers like Pascal and Polaris. :/

Ok. I had a GeForce 2 MX back in the day that I maxxed the overclock just to see if I could top a chart on 3D Mark. I actually got messages from people asking how I did it. I really just maxxed it out and put a box fan on my open case. I had horrible artifacting, but was able to get through the bench ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

I did bump my 1070 up by 100Mhz to see what happened and it was fine. When I went 150MHz Fire strike crashed and I said good enough hehe.

What's the best brand if you won't be overclocking? I assume EVGA has the highest boosted clocks?

Not sure about other brands, but I bought my Gigabyte G1 Gaming, because it seemed to have the highest advertised clocks of 1822MHz. It seems like most will hit 1900MHz boost with nothing changed.

I would pick G1 Gaming because of the cooler temps. Lower temperature helps with OC on pascal cards.

You can't RMA your 970? Is it out of warranty?

Isn't MSI's GPU warranties at least 3 years anyway?
https://us.msi.com/page/warranty/#w-vga

The card hasn't even been out that long, if we count September of this year then it would be coming up on it's 3rd year since GTX 900 series cards were introduced in September of 2014.

If Lain can pull up his purchasing information or has registered his card with MSI. They should within reason be able to get it fixed. At least that is would one would expect out support since for all intents and purposes the warranty should still be valid.

Yeah I could RMA it I think, but it'd mean being without a working PC for longer than I could manage. I'll probably do it anyways later after I receive the new card. I ended up settling on the Gigabyte G1 Gaming (since it was 458€ on amazon).

Cool, I've been thinking about going Gigabyte again. Got a G1 Gaming 960 and it runs like a dream and can't hear it at all.

I've tried to OC in the past but I get this weird problem where games will start to get dead pixels and then it just crashes.

Spent some time dialing in the OC today, and ended up stable with +150 Core / +500 Memory. I could probably get another 20-30 on the memory, but I'm not going to bother.

Damn it shows (Micron)

I've tested it for a while and all runs just fine at stock. Card boosts up to 1936 (stable). Are all Microns defective or?

No, just seems that Samsung chips overclock a bit better. The defective memories were in MSI cards and they did a callback for those.
I have Micron in my Gainward too and no problems.

what is your idle GPU temp guys? Mine is sitting at 41C. Is that a bit high? Core is downclocked and fan is at 0

46C and fan runs 0%, I have the cheapest model though. 41C is great idle and temps shouldn't be a problem unless your load temperatures are higher than 83C.

Anyone tried using older drivers on a 1070/Pascal card? I hear 353.06 is the last version to support downsampling to non-native resolutions.

Of course I don't want to fuck up my card/system and that driver is over a year old...I don't even think it is for win10. lol

Curious, what's your fan curve look like?

Here you go.

Really hoping someone might be able to help me. My computer was running just fine with my 970, but ever since I installed my EVGA Superclocked 1070 I'm noticing screen tearing across basically everything. Stopped playing Mirror's Edge because of it, luckily don't see any in Overwatch, just downloaded the original Titanfall and it's there too. VSync is doing jack shit. I don't have a special monitor or anything. Can someone help please? :(

Someoneeeeee pleaseeeeeee

Weird, my triple fan G1 doesn't do that but it seems like a simple enough fix at least thankfully if it happens.

Just tried it and it didn't work.

I also noticed just now that my card has HORRENDOUS coil whine in my new rig. I think I might have to RMA this thing. Ugh. I've heard tales of Gigabyte's "customer service"...

RMA'd my Gigabyte G1 1070 for coil whine and bought a EVGA ACX3.0 1070 with the money.

GPU core runs at 2050Mhz, while the (Samsung) memory reaches 8.8Ghz. Very happy with it.

That is precisely what I'm considering doing. How was the RMA process for you?

Pretty painless, although I returned the card the same week that I bought it and already notified them of the problem the day I received it. Keep in mind that in my country there's a 14 day cooldown period for internet purchases by law.

On another topic, I just realized that my current 15m HDMI cable that I've tucked away nicely doesn't support 4K@60hz with 4:4:4. It only goes up to 4K@60hz with 4:2:0 max. Need to buy a HDMI cable as well :(

I'm in Canada and have owned the card for several months, so it's gonna be a little more painful for me. I've read PSU can be a factor with coil whine, and given that my Corsair PSU is close to 5 years old, I've decided to purchase a new one and see if it remedies the issue. I'm actually on a new build and, aside from hard drives and the 1070 itself, it's the only other part I've recycled from my old build. Gonna rule it out first before I send this thing out to Gigabyte.

I've also upgraded from a MSI 970 to a MSI 1070 and noticed some issues in overwatch. On the 970 I could play in borderless windowed no problem. On the 1070 in borderless window I get major screen tearing and moderate input lag. Switching to Fullscreen seems to fix it. Keep in mind the Nvidia control panel was set to all defaults on both cards and no vsync ingame. Monitor is 120hz and ingame set to 1080p/120. Me thinks it's a driver issue on the 1070s.

Can anyone else test this on their system and confirm?

The faster the card is the more frames it will render ahead - hence the increase in lag. A different performing card will tear the screen differently as well - more frames means more tearing in general as the screen updates are happening more frequently. I don't think that there's any driver issue. Try running with fast sync or just plain vsync with prerender limit set to 1.

There can also be some difference in running borderless between Win10 1511 and Win10 1607.

Hope you have better luck with yours than I did! Let me know how it goes.

Tried the fix and it still makes the noise.

I'm fine with just turning off 3D Active Fan, my case has enough fans in it that it's not gonna make any extra noticeable noise.

Should I RMA my GTX 1070 that did this earlier today:
It has worked fine for week now and I did Unigine benchmarks today with no artifacts/corruption. (1080p, 1440p)
What are the chances of it being just drivers doing something stupid? It happened only on that tab in the moving section (subscription and search bar were corruption free) and refresh fixed it, but can't get the worry out of my head.
I guess warranty will replace it if it starts happening more often, but I have till Thursday to return it with no questions asked. Kind of don't want to go through all the hassle but don't want to live in fear either..

Try different power cables, monitor cables, pci slots, monitor, and use ddu to uninstall the drivers. Then reinstall them. If it still happens. It's time for an RMA.

Only happened once this morning and I'm unable to reproduce this, which is why I'm actually thinking of keeping the card.
If it happened constantly I would definitely return it.

So uhhh, Deus Ex is telling me I need one of these. The 3.5GB of VRAM in my 970 ain't cutting it.

Is there a best/best value for money 1070 the community has settled on? Thinking of going with either the MIS Gaming X or the Gigabyte G1

Out of those two I'd personally take the G1 since it is not as wide in terms of size. It should OC just like any other based on the lottery. I would imagine it's not as heavy too if any of that matters.

https://www.nowinstock.net/computers/videocards/nvidia/gtx1070/

My Asus Turbo with the blower fan does 2000/4150 easily with the stock fan curve.
No coil whine
No back plate.
Fan never goes above 60% even when doing a burn in with furmark.

I've got a Gigabyte G1 and it's great, I think they're cheaper too so that's a plus also.

My MSI 1070 has micron memory. Should I just keep it or RMA it just to be safe? Any comment from MSI in the west about it yet?

I don't think the problem was as major as first thought, it just seems like the Micron memory just doesn't overclock as well as the Samsung Memory.

Unless you are getting lots of artifacts and glitches all the time, then the card should be fine. My MSI Armor card has Micron memory and is working fine so far.

asus 1070 owners, any of you having issues with gpu tweak not starting when windows starts? google search results proves that its a known issue. ive tried adding the shortcut manually and it worked once. trying to see if theres a permanent fix.
