Nvidia Sheild or Vita?

Shield is a better streamer with proper triggers but Vita has some games not found on other platforms plus is backward compatible with many PSP games on PSN.

Buy a Vita if you're interested in Japanese games + PSP classics or Shield if that's not your thing.

I know... you can play them on the Vita. +PS1 library and its own Vita library, it's the ultimate handheld to me.

I just need cfw so I can get my emulators on it. The PSP was also my Game boy machine.

The main reason people buy a console is it's own games

I do not own a PS4. I also don't know if I have a dual band router. My internet is through ATT UVerse. I do have a GTX 660 TI card in my PC.

My router isn't dual band and I still manage to get playable performance out of it. 30fps solid or 60fps with some artifacting.

Vita for the games.

What games? PC has all the indies and most of the ports. PS1, PS2 and PSP as well. That leaves Tearaway & Gravity Rush vs every PC exclusive. Android stuff too. The Shield library is massive.

I sold my Vita in a financial crisis a while back. I was gonna buy a 2000 model but can't find any reason to do so with most of the games being indies I can play on PC and Sony giving up first-party support. Get a Nvidia Shield to stream your PC games, it's the only sane option.

Vita has way more good games than those two.

Having FF I thru X-2 available to me anywhere on a device with good controls and an awesome screen is worth it alone.

Hot Shots Golf, P4G, Muramasa, Katamari and MGS are all really good too, off the top of my head.

I would only choose a Shield if you have the following criteria checked:

- You have an Nvidea GPU
- You have no interest whatsoever on Vita,PSP and PSX games that can be played exclusively on the vita.
-Your PS+ IGC are not that many yet.
-You have a very high bandwidth internet connection
-You don't take value in Remote Play with PS3/PS4
- No interest in PS Now.

Otherwise I'd get a Vita. I got a Vita myself because I don't have a capable PC and I am invested in the Sony ecosystem.

I have not used the Shield so I can't comment. However I do own a Vita and it's an amazing device. If you have a PS4 and could make use of the remote play it's almost a no brainer. Also, PS+ is amazing. And there are a ton of fantastic games.

He doesn't need the games to be everywhere, he mentioned he needs them at home.

And you can play Hot Shots Golf, Persona 4, MGS and Final Fantasy 1-12 and 14 on Shield too.

Getting PS+ has put a lot of vita games at my finger tips, but I don't have a vita to play them on. I've been thinking of getting one, but I've held off because the memory cards are expensive and the library is rather limited. I do most of my portable gaming in my house, as I have a 3 year old to watch when I'm out of the house. Having a private screen is a big bonus.

The indie scene on the Vita sounds cool, but I already have many of the titles on my PC. This lead me to look at the Sheild. It can stream a huge backlog of games that I've already paid for. Getting one from Amazon Warehouse would be $50 cheaper and it wouldn't need a memory card.

So I ask GAF, between these two, which is best suited for me?

P.S.: I'm also a big fan of my 3DS and the Wii U's off TV play.

Since it seems you aren't actually interested on playing the Japanese games on Vita, then your best choice is the Shield, cheaper and a bigger catalogue.

I wouldn't get a Shield personally since I have both a capable Android phone (Xperia Z2) and high-end gaming PC, so my choice would be a Vita not for indies since that would be covered on the phone and PC but for the Japanese games not released elsewhere.

I don't really understand why this matters at all. NVidia doesn't make content, so unless you care more about its hardware than the games coming out, I would say Vita. "You should get this because they're making another" is odd.

Nvidia does make content but I'm sure you are strictly talking about games and in this case you might as well say Apple doesn't make content, yet people still buy their expensive hardware.

All that matters here is that Nvidia's SHield is platform that is supported with games people want to play both for PC and Android while Vita gets Sony IP and some nifty but small amount of exclusives from 3rd parties.

I think a new version of the Shield is due soon, hold off until it comes out.

The Shahid is great but it's practically end of life.

Through an emulator? Is that even compatible with the Shield?
Uh yeah, it runs Android so why wouldn't it have emulators?

I can't wait till a Shield model comes out that's powerful enough to run Gamecube/Wii games at a good framerate. Then it will truly be the GOAT handheld.

Yup, it has access to Google Play.

Right, so it can do emulation and apps. Personally I'd have no use for the streaming thing (I never use it on my Vita except when I don't have the HDMI plugged into my PS4 and want to check/ download something on it).

So Shield is fairly useless for me, since it has no phone/ 3G.

VITA: How is this even a real question? Shield is just an Android phone inside a controller. Vita is free games ever months and PS4 remote play.

No brainer

Still going, huh?

Just sayin'.

I don't know what's worse, this or all the posts encouraging to the OP to buy a Vita without providing any reason.

As an owner of both systems, I would take the Shield over the Vita. Theres just so much more functionality available to the system due to it running Android, it makes for a better package.

My pros and cons:

Shield pros:

- better thumbsticks and triggers
- higher resolution screen
- HDMI out (big pro)
- Great emulation
- A few decent Android games
- nVidia game streaming (you need to have a recent GTX card for this, but it works well and pretty much opens up a good chunk of your Steam library to portale gaming)
- Runs XBMC, coupled with HDMI out turns the Shield into a great portable set-top box
- Great battery life
- Runs stock Android, so you can use Any Android app really, though some are awkward to use because of the Shield's setup

Shield cons:

- Heavy, and not as portable as the Vita
- Android gaming selection isnt good. You need to turn to the systems other gaming features to get any use out of it.
- DPAD isnt the greatest

Vita Pros:

- better dpad and buttons
- Vita library at the moment isnt bad
- DAT OLED screen is nice, if a bit on the lower resolution side these days (assuming you go for an older model Vita, newer ones are LCD)
- PS4 streaming is functional
- Free PS+ games

Vita Cons:

- Shoulder buttons arent great
- Rear touch is useless
- Seems like the Vita's upcoming library is relegated to indies and retro games
- Vita games are too expensive if you ask me

my two primary platforms are PC and vita

I like what the shield is, but hate the hardware they used. the buttons/sticks, everything feels huge and bulky and while not uncomfortable, its definitely due for some improvement

vita sticks are a little goofy but it's an incredible platform, with quite a few games you cant get on PC.

I guess the question is: are you wanting an easy way to stream your current PC library to a handheld, or are you looking for new games you cant currently get?

I'd go with a vita in that case but I think thats what the decision comes down to at this point

Sorry but this is rubbish

- The shoulder buttons are the best on any handheld device.
- If the rear touch is so useless, why is it even a negative if it's not used?
- How is this a con, games are games
- Contradiction with the above, most of the downloadable games are cheap and older retail games worth having are being discounted like mad.

So what you are saying is that he should buy the Shield? ;)

- You have no interest whatsoever on Vita,PSP and PSX games that can be played exclusively on the vita.
Not really. In fact, one could make the argument that PSP and PSX are better on Shield (larger library, better graphics, more suitable controls for the latter).

But really, I'd wait to see if there isn't a Shield 2 announcement soon.

I have both, I would go vita, but if you have no other Sony devices or PS+, then maybe it isn't for you.

For Shield, The streaming is OK, but I still get random disconnects and many (most) games will either not work at all, or you will need a ton of workarounds to get joystick support, not to mention applications not closing correctly, so you need to open up your PC to get it to actually close. Grid actually works great for me, but with PS Now coming, I would probably go there first. I did manage to play a little dark souls 2, but a random hitch killed me and the application wouldn't close. Also, most GUI that are made for PC will be completely worthless/unreadable on the little shield screen. I would go as far as to say, if you are buying it exclusively thinking you are going to stream PC games, just stop now. It is not nearly reliable enough. and it is usually on the PC side that something goes wrong.

I hate 99% of all iOS and Android games, so I will stay out of that fight. I would suggest UrQuan masters for running on the shield though.

If you do go with shield. you will want to bookmark this page:

just fyi if pc is your primary gaming platform. many vita exclusives are not native res and have iffy framerate.

its fine for console folks, but if you game at 1080p+ 60fps most of the time, its pretty apparent.

- I disagree, the shoulder buttons are mushy. Never liked the feel of them on my Vita.
- Why tout a feature that never gets used as a positive? I always found that it got in the way for games that did use it, because then you have to hold the system in a less comforatble way to keep your hands off of it. Not a fan at all.
- Subjective I guess. I'm just not a fan of the upcoming library.
- I was referring to new games, I should have been clearer on that. Obviously older games get discounted over time.

can you play uncharted on a shahid?

Golden Abyss isn't a very good argument for the Vita, dude.

Shield can stream most PC games. That's a massive slew of exclusives right there. Even if you take out games that need K&M it's still a huge list.
