Nvidia Stuns Wall Street with Record Earnings

Jen-Hsun Huang is the greatest CEO of the modern era, perhaps even more so than Steve Jobs. Huang aspires to be like Jobs and Apple respectively, but in many ways he and nVidia have surpassed them.

I would advise everyone to buy nVidia stock immediately if you want to be rich in 10 years.

I don't understand how any of this works. Shouldn't AMD be making money hand over fist with how the consoles are selling?

Whoa. Here's hoping AMD has some great cards coming out soon; a monopoly benefits noone.

R9 390x is the best card on the market in terms of price and performance. Plus, 8GB DDR5.

I like the guy too, but he doesn't touch Jobs and Nvidia stock is not going to make you rich--as in the classical definition.

Look at that diversity in that portfolio. Perfection.

Imagine if their Tegras start getting picked up.
They're not really focusing on smartphones so much anymore. Tablets maybe.

Nvidia is betting big on self-driving cars, deep learning, and VR to be their growth markets.

AMD must have offered to supply MS and Sony for free, X1 + PS4 sales in the 40m now?? And they are barely hanging on... lol.

Because they fucked up in many other ways and their desktop strategy has been pathetic. The funny thing is that the GPU talent/skill they have is quite impressive. AMD just don't have the cash to pull all the shit that Nvidia does with developers these days--but they certainly would if they could.

Margins aren't very high there.

Meanwhile, NVIDIA pretty much owns the high-end professional graphics sectors. VFX/CG studios, animation studios, even game developers who put their games on primarily AMD-powered consoles will more likely be working on NVIDIA equipped workstations.

Besides my graphics card I bought a nvidia shield tv for retro gaming and its a fucking powerhouse for what I wanted lol. Love the remote too.....whole design was actually really good for a top box.

Way better than my fire tv or Razer tv thanks to sdcard support.....so yes....I have to say they have solid devices that I want to buy

The Shield TV is an amazing device that never seems to get any hype on here as a great emulation box.

It just doesn't have the ecosystem. It's far superior to Apple TV in terms of specs and functionality, but it can't touch the content.

Came very close to buying one but opted for Apple again. Oh, and when Apple is the cheaper option, you know there's a price problem.

Terrible advice. Never bet on individual equities.

Shield is goddamn sexy

Fuck yes it is....pulled it out of the box and was like....holy shit....this is one sleek looking motha!

Yes....the sdcard makes It the best top box out there. I even prefer it over my raspberry pi 2 at this point. Going to see if any GameCube games run on it. I still have Lord of the rings the third age lying around and never finished it.

Can you run emulators on an Apple TV?

Nvidia actually said they only gave half-hearted bid for this console generation because the margins are so low. They basically let AMD have the console market, because there's almost no profit there.

I'm team green, but this it is scary to think about them destroying AMD and dominating even more so. Exclusive graphical features, selling 3.5 cards as 4 and the confusion with needlessly rebranding cards are just things I wish would change.

I am still really happy for them, but I remain cautiously optimistic.

Don't worry team red is on the right track. They are going to undercut nvidia by 2017.

They pretty much undercut themselves to get those deals.

Anyways everytime one of these threads pops up i cant handle but remember all the "salty" Nvidia threads. Who's salty now?

It's a real shame what happened to AMD/ATI. The last card I bought from them was the All-in-Wonder 9800. That was a LONG TIME AGO. Around that time, AMD was king of performance and wiping the floor with Nvidia. They haven't been on par in quite some time.

Awesome for Nividia! I enjoy their products but I wish AMD was a bit more competitive. I'm guessing the rumors of Microsoft buying AMD never amounted to anything?

AMD are almost always on par, and that's apparently the problem. They have been competitive every generation except for 80nm

nVidia has the GPU market in the mindset that if AMD isn't cheaper and better it's a laughable failure. This is part of why they are so successful.

Based on the gaming side being the big boost, I think its everyone who is thinking about going Rift/Vive upgrading their PCs to 970s now. Its at a good price point ($250-350), there are tons of people who are sitting on 1-3 year old PCs that really only need a GPU upgrade to be VR ready, and the realization that VR is coming long before Pascal has everyone shrugging and going for it.

I do wonder though if this is going to negatively impact their sales for the next 18 months. I just bought my 970 a month ago, and unless Pascal is 2x the perf of the 970 for 1.5x the price or less, I'll just stick with my 970 until the next gen card is $300-350.

For me also the calculus of g-Sync came into the picture, I'm still not really sure what monitors are freeSync compatible and they seem harder to find, whereas g-Sync is available in stores near me to try out.

Turns out you can make bank when there isn't any significant competition to get in a price war with. Have 970 prices gone down at all in the last 12 months?

I didn't initially get this reference so I searched through some of those old threads. The console bubble mentality that envelops large portions of this forum is pretty astonishing at times.

AMD market cap is only $1.5 billion now....just spend your cash, Nvidia!

That would be a waste of money. The government regulators wouldn't approve such an acquisition anyways.

There was a price war around Christmas and both Nvidia and AMD cards were deeply discounted. I saw 970's in the $230-250 range after rebates.

I never even consider buying AMD cards and I don't even know why. lol.
I guess Nvidia's constant driver updates makes me feel at ease.
I'm a sucker for peace of mind.

Looks like all those GeForce Experience tweaks are paying off. Gotta get them upgrading cards that would be perfectly fine otherwise.

Nvidia's lead over AMD is absolutely ridiculous.

Somehow, even though AMD's GPUs basically maintain parity, AMD come off like beggars going for scraps. The "AMD has shitty drivers" narrative has never really gone away, and I'm not sure what AMD could do to change that. Nvidia hasn't even really taken advantage of it, as far as I know. Somehow the narrative perpetuates itself.

Which is, evidently, a problem, since better and cheaper (simultaneously) has never existed, ever, in the history of pretty much every consumer item since the idea of consumer products has appeared.

Their new driver platform actually is turning things around. When they launch their AM4 SOCKET and launch their new CPU line I think people are going to see a better value. Also note their price on a gpu using HBM2 will be lower and undercut nvidia.

Looks like a lot of people bought the 970 like I did last month!

My last 3 GPUs have been Nvidia, and they've all lasted me a very long time.

I went: 9600GSO>GTX570>GTX970

Back in the NetBurst days, AMD CPU's were better and cheaper. Maybe that's why the expectation lives on today. :P

On the consumer side.

At the professional end though, their driver situation (especially on Linux) is a big reason why most prefer Nvidia.

Almost always on par but also almost always with a notably higher TDP.

I can only speak for myself personally but I was an ATi diehard back in the day. The Radeon 9700 Pro is still the most impressed I have ever been by a new piece of hardware in my PC. However, since they were acquired by AMD I just don't have the same regard for them as I used to, and I've bought strictly nVidia since then and been very happy with their GPUs.

That's changing very soon hence their new driver platform for open community development. Which will be a huge blow to nvidia in how they handle game ready drivers.

Unlikely.

nVidia has 3x the advertising budget and today's world is ruled by 1st impressions. Aint nobody got time to look at refreshers. Heck, look at AnandTech's review of Carrizo; they did a complete shithouse of AMD's laptop offerings, only to return a week later with a clarification, stating that their initial results were erroneous due to testing issues. Guess how many people bothered to read the errata.

And Intel thoroughly buttfucked them because money + market share.

Game ready drivers aren't a factor for Nvidia on the professional end though. They have application specific drivers if anything (e.g. Maya) there alongside their standard OGL offerings.

Releasing better drivers *ba dum tss*

Seriously, DSR, G-Sync (Window-Mode), SLI, Frame-Pacing, Shader-Cache, better CPU-Utilisation and so on and so forth.
For the past 10 years Nvidia always got an edge in various areas against AMD.

There are many reasons why Nvidia is ruling the market.
I personally hate more or less the whole culture and decisions Nvidia is taking, but they doing their core job really good and better than the competition.
