Oblivion wins Spike TV GOTY "award"

I remember spending half a day playing Morrowind trying to steal some glass armor from the shop at the Ghost Gate and I also remember being totally pumped when I finally got it because of how rare it was. I never got that feeling in Oblivion 'cause there's no such thing as rare weapons or armor.

I'm at a loss for words. Thats exactly what I've trying to put into an argument against Oblivion whenever the topic comes up and that pretty much sums it up.

The level scaling is fine, it's the item scaling that I've got a problem with. When everyone you fight all the sudden is wearing Daedric armor and wielding enchanted weapons, it really kind of bites. Money becomes a non issue and so does your desire to hunt out new weapons and armor because the shit is everywhere, and when the story ends up being lame as well it brings my motivation factor to complete stuff in the game next to nil.

I agree that Morrowind had it's problems with your character basically becoming a god, but the I don't think that giving everyone crazy weapons and armor like in Oblivion is much of a solution. Both are broke, but I almost prefer Morrowind's method. I remember spending half a day playing Morrowind trying to steal some glass armor from the shop at the Ghost Gate and I also remember being totally pumped when I finally got it because of how rare it was. I never got that feeling in Oblivion 'cause there's no such thing as rare weapons or armor.

seems to me it would be the best of both world to keep the leveling intact, but tone down the item scaling (IE the guards will always be a bit higher than you, but your armor eventually could outclass theirs and you could kill them easier etc)

it would keep the challenge without trivializing everything.

I wonder if francsicos has anthing made like this (keep the leveled world, make the content more static).

There is plenty of rare equipment that can be found regardless of your level/stats. But they are just that: rare.

Oblivion did feel like a different experience from Morrowind, i.e. it was less focused on grinding and powerleveling and more on adventuring, but it was still pretty damn awesome at what it was. Let's just hope the next ES game is a balance of both grinding/powerleveling and adventuring and not one extreme.

The scaling ruined Oblivion for me. At first I didn't level the 'right' way, so I'd get slaughtered by random enemies. Then I got smart about and after a few days, I was blowing people away with single shots. Since they were all wearing high level junk I was rich as could be but I had nothing to do with the money.

Are you guys really having the scaling discussion...AGAIN?! We went through that in the official thread at least ten times over.

Anyways, my take: It's not perfect, but it has a lot to do with why the game is so awesome and balanced. I loved it, and taking it out would ruin the game completely.

Also, I can find stuff in caves worth a couple thousand gold when I'm level one and two. You just have to go exploring to find them. It's a great feeling; and that keeps up until you're a character whose level is in the teens. I never understood arguments about there not being great loot; you just have to explore for it. Things did top out too early for me. I'd like a set of DLC with new weapons and creatures for late-level characters, say 25+. That way new stuff keeps getting added to the game.

Yeah, we've been round and round on the whole scaling issue so many times already. I think it's a good thing over all, but needs to be tweaked in the future. Leveling should take place for the vast majority of creatures/NPC's and items in the game, but there should also be plenty of unique items and creatures for you to meet along the way. The system in place has the right idea, but it just needs to be adjusted a bit for Elder Scrolls V.

Well, the scaling issue can be fixed within Oblivion on the PC via Modification. Its more or less adventuring around and finding rare stuff in homes and in dungeons.

I should check if theres a mod that makes the game work more "Morrowind" ish in this regard.

I'm not the biggest fan of it level scaling , but it was needed for what they tried to accomplish in this game, which was to make it more accessible. I personally loved Morrowind, but it didn't have mass appeal, as you would have to spend a good 10+ hours with the game before you could half way start exploring without fear of getting pwned. Yeah, there was certainly a much higher feeling of accomplishment when getting good eqiupment in Morrowind. "Treasure Hunting" was almost like its own game in itself. But Oblivion isn't as big as Morrowind which is understandable considering the amount that is packed into the disc, that is another reason I think they wanted people to be able to get around easily from the start.

But with that said, Oblivion is still such an amazing experience. And if not for FFXII it would be my undisputed GOTY.
