Oculus Rift HD (1080p) shown at E3

Really wish there would be at least some hint as to when an HD unit might be available (even if it's still a dev unit). I really wanna buy the current SD unit, but don't want it to arrive in August right as they start taking orders for an HD kit...

If they would just say, "hey this HD kit isn't coming any sooner than summer 2014" or whatever, the time delay would make me feel comfortable double dipping.

If its holding up the US devices then I guess. I've seen people in the OT thread with order numbers just before mine receive so I assume I'm do for a surprise in a few weeks.

also from the US? I don't follow it in detail, but afaik the customs in the US have stopped a complete shipment on it's way to the US fulfillment center. so those Rifts could already be out, but are in custom hell for an undefined period of time.
There currently is a new batch going there, but I don't know if it already passed customs. Did your status change to processing?

If they release a new dev kit with HD and positional tracking, I will jump all over it, buy a new graphics card and then that will be my next gen experience.

yeah I am very curious myself, but if you want one to play with this winter, you'd better order soon. Who knows how long the waiting period will be with the HD version, because pretty much everyone that has the first dev kit will order it.
And I can see them delivering the first couple of thousands directly to game makers in the AAA industry (and I don't blame them for that).

Yeah I'm in Chicago. I only glanced over the customs issues so I assumed it was for overseas orders mostly. My status changed to processing a few weeks ago.

you use it in conjunction with a pc, it's essentially a display, with each half of the display showing the left and right images, with headtracking gadgetry built into it so games can make use of that

Hmmmm, I'll check it out. Is this thing anywhere near a retail release? Also, have their been any sketches or prototypes of what the final unit will look like? It's pretty huge going off of the pics right now, so I couldn't imagine this catching on in a huge way.

I've been replaying the STALKER games lately. Has anyone done anything about an OR version? I would kill to be able to play the part leading up to the Brain Scorcher on a Rift.

I got the chance to try it at E3...
First of all the Oculus VR guys are super cool, really really the finest people.
And the tech itself is just MINDBLOWING, i left their room almost in shock.

It's that good, really.
A true, astonishing game changer.

the problems were reported for NA & EU, but the EU customers got them a few days after. so it is only a US problem I think.

If Oculus Rift is compatible with PS4, I'll buy it on day 1.

But honestly, I don't think so. Next-Gen consoles are going to suffer to render at 1080p, and if it will, 30 fps will be the usual. To work in 3D with Oculus Rift, the games must be rendered in 1080p60 and that x2 (per eye). And that will be impossible.

There are some tricks to render the image two times (there are some games in PS3 with 3D option), but those tricks mean resolution reduction, fps reduction or even worse, false 3D using layers. The PS3 3D tricks can be used in PS4, but that will make the 3D experience uglier.

I guess Oculus Rift will be enjoyable only on a very high end PC.

The wait is killing me, so I caved in and pre ordered the dev kit the other day. I don't care if the HD version is showcased - with this pacing it won't be shipped this year anyway.

And in either case, I'll just get both. It's only money.

As far as I can tell it is one display of 1920x1080 displaying a single image that is split in the middle.

Can it be added to one or both consoles later? Like Kinect which didn't exist until halfway through the life of the Xbox...

you can add it to pretty much every device with USB and HDMI/DVI - it could even work with the current gen consoles. but of course you need to tailor each game to it to get stable 60FPS, so the optics would suffer a lot. With next gen there is much more power available, so they are likely candidates.
