Oddworld Dev: "Incredibly excited for PS4. No communication with MS"

That's probably the single most retarded thing about MS's digital distribution policy. Rather than celebrate their previous console (as Sony does with all of its HD collections), it's somehow seen a a valid reason to block the HD update.

Weird because Riddick got a pass.

what you mean they irritated bungie?

They told Bungie to keep on making Halo games and Bungie said no. Microsoft kept on insisting that they make a Halo game and Bungie said they no longer wanted to be an exclusive dev anymore because of the lack of freedom. Now, their new game is not only going to be on the PS4, but it's going to have exclusive content. That would be like if Sony told Naughty Dog, "No, you cannot make The Last of Us. Keep on making Uncharted games." Who in the fuck wants to work in that type of environment?

That couldn't have been the sole reason, games like Alien Hominid, OutRun 2, Beyond Good and Evil, Hitman games, and, of course, Halo also appeared on Xbox, but they also got their HD versions on Xbox 360.

Based on what the Oddworld guys said, it doesn't sound like that's a hard and fast rule by any means. Just the reason they gave them for why they didn't want their game (despite the fact that they expressly did want the game months earlier).

I'd imagine MS were more pissed that it was announced/released on Steam and PS3 first, so got their knickers in a twist.

And for Alien Hominid and OutRun2, MS seemed far more open to all types of digital games in the first few years of the 360's life, compared to the last few years.

Oh boy.

Counting, how does it work?

Isn't that generally used for companies like sony and nintendo, which both had two number one consoles for two generations in a row and then a third one that didn't go so well? I don't see how that applies to microsoft.

But that excuse doesn't make much sense, especially if they wanted the game months earlier. There's got to be more to it.

It's becoming clearer and clearer that Microsoft is going to completely shit the bed with this next console. I'm a longtime Xbox fanboy and would love to be wrong but I don't think I am.

I'm not defending MS but who knows what Sony would have done if UC was selling Halo numbers. They kind of do the same thing with SSM a environment so stressful every new GOW had a new director.

Why don't people start quantifying their nect-gen predictions? How much sales will Nintendo, Sony, and MS gain or lose next gen?

Wait, this really happened? I don't really follow the Halo series or Bungie for that matter so I wouldn't know about this but damn.

Why don't people start quantifying their nect-gen predictions?

I think it is because there just is a lot of information concerning the PS4 and Nextbox that we don't know yet to go on a limb and make predictions on how they will both sell in total over a period of somewhere between like 5 to 8 or so years.

Sony could dominate next gen in terms of hardware sales, as could MS, or even Nintendo despite how abysmal the Wii U is selling 4 months after it's launch. It really is anybody's game at this point after seeing how many years ahead the ninth generation of gaming could possibly be IMO.

???

We've been talking about one in this very thread.

That's one game they didn't allow on the service for some reason, not a "type" since other similar games (HD remakes of older games that have already appeared on Xbox, like Beyond Good & Evil HD which was released in 2011) have recently found their way to XBLA without a problem.

By the way, those claims you just made form a circular argument; Stranger's Wrath was not allowed on XBLA because Microsoft allegedly isn't open to those types of games anymore, and to prove the latter you present us with the case of - Stranger's Wrath.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, the situation is obviously not that dire. Oddworld Inhabitants won't have a game ready for Durango's launch (and probably not for PS4's launch either), and that's it.

By the way, it's good to see another moneyhat myth dispelled.
barely 30 replies.. how surprise.. lol

Guerrilla? Polyphony? SSM?

And I'm pretty sure that MS had a contract with Bungie to make Halo. And for sure they were avid for freedom. Now they will make a futuristic FPS with great emphasis on online gameplay.

THIRD CONSOLE CURSE!

Sega only had one console to break out & sell way above 10 millions & that was the Genesis that made it to 40 Million the rest all sold around 10 million so the Saturn wasn't a '3rd Console Curse' Genesis was just a 2nd console success.

Nintendo started off with 61 million with the NES then started to drop with each new console SNES 49 million , N64 32 million & GameCube around 22 million so again not a '3rd Console Curse' just tougher competition from the PS1.

PS3 is at 77 million & still going the only none Sony Console to sell more than the PS3 is the Wii with 99 million & the PS3 had tougher competition with the Xbox 360 & Wii both making it over 50 million something that has never happened before so making it to 77 million with a divided market like this is still good & it might make it past the PS1 before it's all said & done.

NO THIRD CONSOLE CURSE

Wooooo! MS are going in with the lowest of the low expectations. I mean, with the exception of a few "wait and see" types the mood on the internet is sour as hell towards the 720. I can not wait to see how this plays out. People are speaking rather definitively and dancing on its grave and it hasn't even been formally announced yet. That's damn near unprecedented! Shit is going to be so awesome to watch. E3 is going to be monumental.

But that excuse doesn't make much sense, especially if they wanted the game months earlier. There's got to be more to it.

Well then MS said they didn't want it because it had already appeared on the PS3. But I agree...the whole story is absurd and makes no sense. Not that that makes it untrue or anything.

Yeap, calm before the storm. E3 is going to be huge!

It's still amazing how MS is going into their 3rd Console Gen as the underdog. How does it work? Madness!

I think their reveal will be divisive as fuck depending on who you are.

Some will see only the negative and be like "fuck this", but then others will see done awesome silver lining based on their circumstances.

Example. All games install, won't run off disc. Which basically means no used games. Most will fucking rage.

But for the rest of us who don't buy used games, will be one of the best console experiences around when we can jump between games freely without disc swapping. Can't wait.

Again, I understand how that sucks for most, but if I'm being selfish for a moment, that sounds fucking awesome.

I don't know but I think it'll be good for them. They could use the adrenaline right about now.

I agree. Most of their bullet-points will come with exit wounds. Time will tell if they were worth it (like Ethernet only on OG Xbox) or complete missteps.

Yeah, but games could install without having to block used games. Not sure why the console has to be anti-consumer so that you can hop from game to game.

Guerrilla? Polyphony? SSM?

Just FYI, Guerrilla has a new IP in development with their second team, as does SSM (director is Stig).

Speaking of Stig, Polyphony is just weird. Kaz only wants to make car games. Not that he doesn't have freedom to do other stuff if he wants-- see Tourist Trophy.

A lot of Microsoft's reluctance to allow Bungie to develop a new IP probably had to do with the fact that the proposed IP was so damned similar Halo.

IIRC the reasons Oddworld Stranger never came to XBox 360 were:

1. File size was too big for XBLA
2. The developer had not released a game that had sold more than 500,000 on disc
3. Something about not having backing of a large publisher
4. They weren't allowed to release it on Games on Demand (where file size wasn't an issue)
5. Eventually MS stopped talking to them about the game.

Now obviously there is more to it than that, but those are points I remember Golden Helmet/Stuart Gillray talking about on GAF in the past couple of years. It's possible I might be wrong about one or two of them, no doubt.

But generally speaking, there is no good reason why the game could not have been released on 360 unless there were concerns from MS about sales of it. Which was an argument proven wrong based on great Vita and PSN sales.

Guerrilla? Polyphony? SSM?

GG are apparently working on a new IP, and so are SSM. Polyphony pull a lot of weight so I doubt Sony is forcing anything on them. In fact Polyphony said no to letting Evo Studios use the GT brand so they obviously want to keep doing what they're doing.

Try again.

I know you like to defend all things Microsoft, but my ??? was because there have been a number of publicised instances where smaller devs have had their games/genres rejected by MS. Even studios that had previously released on XBLA have found they're being rejected by newer polices. Your example of BG&E that got past their rules are telling, as it had a big publisher behind it.

I'm surprised that you genuinely hadn't come across this before (hence the ???). The below isn't a definitive list, but just ones I remember from the top of my head.

http://www.xblafans.com/indie-adventure-game-machinarium-refused-for-xbla-41.html

Microsoft just refused Machinarium for XBLA after a half year of talking with them. They like the game and know it would be very successful on their platform, but they don’t want to support games which aren’t Microsoft exclusives.

http://www.destructoid.com/more-fai...xbla-cutting-down-on-arcade-ports-78202.phtml

Our initial plan was to port lots of good arcade titles to XBLA. We talked to IP holders of these titles, and persuaded them. We secured these licenses, and finally talked with Microsoft. There they rejected all of our proposals saying, 'We are going to cut down faithful arcade ports.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17960

I think the thing with Live Arcade, though, is that I remember the last year and the year before. Two years ago was when we were first talking with Microsoft about doing it, it was really exciting, because Live Arcade had just came out, and they were like, "Oh, it's new. It's not going to be like retail. There's not going to be all this crap. There's going to be all these small, great, fun things."

But now it's exactly the same. There's all these big-budget ones with big publishers making them, and the real problem, I think, is that the same people who are deciding what retail games get greenlit are deciding what Live Arcade games get greenlit.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/pompom-games-michael-michael-interview

There seems to be a misconception that we choose the platforms that we work on, too. It's absolutely not the case. We couldn't make an Xbox Live Arcade game now if we wanted to, most likely.

After Mutant Storm, we presented Astro Tripper to Microsoft, and they didn't want it because the scope of the platform was changing, so we went to PSN.

It's worth pointing out that Sony and Nintendo have done their fair share of similar rejections for their digital platforms.

http://www.edge-online.com/news/sony-lost-limbo-deal-because-it-wanted-ip-rights/

That is why the recent announcements and direction by Sony for self publishing and no content approval is such a big deal. Sony and MS seem to now be pulling in different directions. MS going down the Windows 8 path of ever tightening restrictions, Sony going for the more open policies.

When was the last time you were actually impressed by Microsoft at E3?

Yeah, but games could install without having to block used games. Not sure why the console has to be anti-consumer so that you can hop from game to game.
Because you can install other system for free. Buy one and share disc all of your friend's systems.

To be fair, I can't remember the last time I've been impressed by any of the three console makers at e3.

This is true. With so many leaks and awkward moments onstage it's become pretty disappointing.

Then you must have forgotten about the single greatest moment in E3 history.

Not as monumental as the Vitality Sensor.

shinn is the kind of guy that will try to convince you that somehow sony doesn't have online games and actually makes up lists with wrong information, to be then called out by someone (and mocked in the process) and never to return to that thread again (here's a gem and the thread itself). some really good stuff in there.
