OELVNs (Original English Language Visual Novels) - No Translation Required

What the hell is an OELVN?
OELVN stands for Original English Language Visual Novel. A visual novel (VN) is a traditionally Japanese form of story telling, merging novels, video games, and anime into one medium. While some are purely reading experiences, a majority revolve around choice-based game play, operating like a digital "Choose Your Own Adventure" novel. Some others may also involve much more complex puzzle solving or other game mechanics. VNs are often lightly animated, feature themed music, and sometimes even voice acting.

A choice few VNs are translated into English and other languages; some commercially and some for free by fans. But comparatively few are made in natively in other languages. By far the most popular second language for visual novels is English, and this thread seeks to spotlight and be a place where fans can discuss VNs written and released originally in English: OELVNs.

Do I have to buy these games?
Some of them, but a large portion of OELVNs are free to download and play, though there are a few commercial projects.

What platform(s) can I play these on?
Windows, MacOS X, and Linux are supported pretty universally. Support outside of these is scare, however. A few Android ports do exist but are rare.

How can some many be free? How are they making them?
Many OELVNs are written using Ren'Py, an open source, multi-platform, and free for commercial use visual novel engine, based around Python Programming Language. Other oft-used free engines include NScripter/ONScripter-EN and KiriKiri.

Wait, so then anyone can make these? Doesn't that mean they're really terrible?
Yes, realistically, anyone could. And while there are mountains of bad OELVNs, full of questionable writing and suspect artwork, there are a few gems to be found.

Do OELVNs get translated into other languages?
Sometimes, particularly the more successful ones might manage a translation or two.

Okay, what are some popular titles?
Katawa Shoujo (Four Leaf Studios)
21994_katawa_shoujo.jpg
Hisao Nakai's life until recently had been normal, perhaps lackluster, but normal. Until a sudden twist of fate changes all that. Thrown into a hospital with a once-dormant-now-awakened and potentially fatal heart condition and forced to transfer schools in his final year of high school, he must now cope with not only being handicapped but his new surroundings as well: Yamaku High School and the disabled students it serves. Will Hisao wallow in his own self-pity, or will he learn to live and love again?

Easily one of the most popular OELVNs ever. Released in 2012 by an international team assembled from the underbelly of the internet known as 4chan, its rocky development history and surprisingly robust final product, with production values rivaling that of some professional Japanese VNs, have resulted in a massive niche popularity. It's already been completely translated into French and Russian, and other languages are still in the works.

There's also a NeoGAF comunity thread for KS, for those interested: Katawa Shoujo |OT| (VN, Free, Waifus, etc)

Happy reading!

Hey, interesting idea!

At first I was going to comment about how GGN shouldn't be here, seeing as how it was developed by a Japanese dev... but then I remembered that it launched first (and only) in English (it has a Japanese-language option, but it's not the main focus)

Also, you might want to listen to this recommendation: try to get a mod to move the thread to Gaming General for a while in order to get exposure. People rarely come in here in search of new threads.

Go Go Nippon is made by Overdrive, it's strange to have it in this thread.

Dysfunctional Systems and some of Christine Love's stuff is worthwhile, I haven't read the rest other than Katawa Shoujo.

Yeah, I added that in there half as a little joke and half because it was released for primarily the English market in English.

Thanks for the tip, Marche, I'll ask around.

Thanks!

Like really. Thanks for making this. I love visual novels but barely play them, so this will go under that list of threads ill use that one day i decide to binge play them.

I just want to drop in and say that Digital: A love story is amazing, and it is free!

Analog: A Hate story is not as good, but should give it a try if you enjoy digital.

Subscribed. Didn't know there was a fan made prequel to Clannad. That's interesting actually.

Katawa Shoujo was really good too, Admittedly, I've only played 1 route (Emi's) but it was great. I should check out the other arcs too... I'm just not a big VN player.

A request: can you please note if a game is pornographic or not? Some stuff is obvious enough (Kawata Shoujo), but other things (like Analog: A Hate Story) are not.

I can add that in later yeah. Looking them up in the VN Database in the resource section will also usually tell you if a property has eroge/sexual/H-game elements to them.

Yeah, there's also a couple of Japanese fan sequels and side-story VNs too, but they've sadly never been translated.

You really should. The other routes, and even the bad endings, are pretty darn good.

I got Long Live The Queen during the Steam sales, I have only played a little of it but have had a lot of fun so far and as far as I am aware it is originally English.

Not sure if it is necessarily popular enough for the OP, but I really enjoyed it and it was well received in the Steam sale thread.

Good thread, made some new discoveries. Would you recommend http://vndb.org as a good source for finding new VNs? I'm not experienced with them, but I have my eye on a lot of them.

It's very similar but I'm not sure if it qualifies as a Visual Novel. I learned about it from Totalbiscuit's presentation.

Long Live The Queen counts (it's in VNDB, it just has some non-traditional-VN play elements) but then again, my list wasn't meant to be all inclusive. I'm not personally familiar with every property, but having GAFfer make suggestions like you have is more the idea! Probably a better way to find them too. VNDB is nice, but I don't know if it's the best discovery resources. It's a good repository of information and styles and you may be able to find some interesting ones, but there's a lot of potential junk for you wade through.

This thread is relevant to my interests

Edit: Holy crap that Go! Go! Nippon! video is amazing

Yeah, that video is amazing. I really, really laughed when the girl is half naked on the bathroom yet the user pointed about how advanced is having a washing machine in the bath lol.

The ending is amazing too.

Jisei worth it? Sounds interesting to me.

Also, you're missing "Shira Oka - Second Chances" I think

Most of the reviews I've seen for it and it's sequels have been pretty positive, if that's any indicator for you..

Again, not an exhaustive list. I'll probably collect a lot of recommendations that didn't make my initial list and edit in an expanded list later.

It's Christine.

Whoops, thank you.

Any of these bring out the mindfucks like Uchikoshi stuff or Danganronpa? How's Dysfunctional Systems on that front?

Dysfunctional Systems has its fair share of despair, but is very straightforward. The closest to those titles you mention would be Analogue: A Hate Story. in which you play the part of an investigator researching into an ancient society to uncover the truth behind a very tragic past incident.

A request: can you please note if a game is pornographic or not? Some stuff is obvious enough (Kawata Shoujo), but other things (like Analog: A Hate Story) are not.

Analogue's story is told via reading log files and personal letters and there isn't any visual pornographic content, however there are a couple of log files which are sexual in nature (although fairly tame). Hate Plus is mostly the same, except it's only 1 log file but the content is a bit stronger.

I also wouldn't be put off by it being labelled as a sequel in the OP, Analogue and Hate Plus merely take place in the same world as Digital and are a totally self-contained story dealing with the downfall and destruction of a society. Analogue was actually the first VN I played and I really enjoyed it, it's presented in a cheerful way with a bunch of usual tropes but the underlying story that you'll be uncovering is deep and fairly tragic.

I also can't praise Katawa Shoujo enough, on the surface it may appear to be nothing more than a tacky dating sim with a bunch of sex scenes, but underneath it's a fantastic VN that tackles and challenges perceptions of disability.

this is a great resource. thanks, OP. since finishing Danganronpa, I've been looking for more VNs to check out and free is always nice.

Save the Date is a good game. It has a great way of unlocking new paths during multiple playthroughs. It can be a bit of a bummer.

I tried playing through it last night. I'll say that it's interesting, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's good. Inventive, yes. A bit too heavy with the didactic narrative for my taste.
