The Pirates are putting themselves in this position so they can break my heart in epic fashion later this season huh? I mean, how do you break the heart of fans who have endured 18 straight losing seasons? Give them hope, only to crack open their chests and rip out their hearts in cold blood. That's how.

I keep telling myself not to get my hopes up, but damnit, this squad of overachievers is starting to look legit. Fuck yeah Bucs, maintain that swag!

A blown call at the plate? Nah, you see a lot of those nowadays.
Didn't look like a blown call to me. Varitek blocked and his other foot never made solid contact with the plate.

Either way, if the runner had some balls that wouldn't have been an issue.

Yeah you're right, his foot only brushed the plate before Varitek taged, gotta get the "solid contact" in order to be called safe.

...you are saying this like that isn't common sense when it really is.

At least it wasn't an almost-fictional walkoff balk like the dumb call that ended a game last night.

Speaking of the Royals, this Italian pitcher of ours, Filipe Paulino might turn out okay.

Safe.
Right leg got in before tag.
Well maybe he won't take baserunning tips from Nancy Drew next time the game is on the line. The leg still could be hovering over a tad, the way he was moving he wasn't able to get it down. From the stills it looks closer than how it plays out in motion.

I'll take it either way. Exciting finish.

Braves win.....and of course the phillies are winning 11-2 in the top of the ninth. The braves are going to have to go on a 20 game win streak to make up these 4 games.

I know the Phillies are lucky by Pythag, but their rotation is quality enough that their run environment should be depressed, so they don't need to score as many runs to win. Hence why catching them is probably futile this season. Braves should still be favorites for the WC though, I imagine.

Yeah the phillies won't be going on any kind of losing streak so our hopes of catching them is certainly diminished. I guess it makes the head to head series that much more important. This weekend should be fun.

Hey, I'm watching the Mets game and I see Beltran has two stars in the back of his cap on both sides of the MLB logo. Are all players selected to the All-Star game wearing this special cap?

Dunno... I know Clippard was tonight. Maybe it's optional though.

The good news is we have won 2 of 3 of the head to head series so far this season.

What's sad about the Capps trade isn't so much the return we got on it and the fact that Mauer was subsequently injured, but the fact that Nathan was dogshit when he returned so you actually have to use him.

No, what's sad about the trade is that the Twins traded their best trade chip for a "luxury" who was basically exactly the same fucking guy they had closing because he was a "proven closer." The Nationals picked him up off the fucking scrap heap, and the Twins gave them one of their top prospects for a guy they already essentially had, plus they paid his ineffective ass $7 million this season.

He seems like a decent guy, and I don't necessarily hate him personally, but it was a horrible baseball move by the Twins. It was a terrible allocation of resources. Two weeks later they got the far more effective Fuentes for essentially nothing. This off-season instead of allocating $7 million to bring in a few arms they just re-upped Crapps. And he's been horrendously ineffective. At least Jon Rauch has sweet neck tattoos.

Free Joe Nathan or Free Glen Perkins. I don't fucking care. Just get Capps out of the fucking ninth inning. Now.

Can I interest you in Jon Rauch for Kyle Gibson?

CC the past two games- 15IP, 11 Hits, 4 walks, 24 K, 0 runs allowed. 12-4, not an all-star.

All the more reason to select him for the honors (which is routine)
You lot should be glad he isn't in it. Now he's only a four time All Star when he's renegotiating his contract after the season.
