Watch this shit - the Twins will play like shit for two weeks. Then they'll take 3 out of 4 in the cell.

Who wants Michael Cuddyer? We need a first baseman.

No need to find a 1B. Mauer gonna be playing that position soon..

Yay Dodgers, Angels win in the same night!!!!

Doyers are listening to offers on Kuroda. 10:1 odds he gets traded for cash and a low level prospect so McCourt doesnt have to pay the 6+mil hes still owed this season.

So THIS is what Marlin fans must feel like...

if the Marlins had fans

So apparently the reason we didn't use Clippard tonight (which led to the majority of the runs scoring) was that he had arm fatigue, probably from being ridiculously fucking overused throughout this and last season. Thanks Riggleman!

On the bright side, Espinosa now on pace to pull off the coveted 30/30 (30 HR, 30 HBP). What a legend.

Peachy Beachy looked very good for the second time in a row:
Brandon Beachy pitched incredibly tonight and earned a well-deserved win in just his second game back from the disabled list. His fastball was great, which set up some effective changeups and a few nasty curveballs as well. As a result, Beachy fanned nine batters on the night, including a fellow named Ichiro twice, who had only struck out 26 times on the year coming into tonight.

Manny Ramierez is owed $21 million by the bankrupt Dodgers. Derek Lowe looks like a bargain.

Wow, you really think he's going to retire? Sorry, dude.
Hey, a True Minnesota Sports Fan who comments on the Star Tribune website (thankfully I'm can't be one since I live in North Dakota) would say to trade the bum for relief pitchers. Mauer won't be the everyday first baseman for years, if ever. He might play there once or twice a week to let Morneau DH, but he won't be the everyday 1B.

Lol, Mauer is awesome.

After Jose Mijares complained at his game calling of only calling fastballs Mauer replied: "Called for a fastball there," Mauer said. "I didn't call for it down the middle."

Later tonight, Atlanta at Seattle:
Two of the games most exciting young hurlers square off this evening when Hanson returns from the disabled list to lead Atlanta against Pineda-led Seattle in the second contest of a three-game series at Safeco Field.

Hanson has put together consecutive double-digit win seasons to begin his career and holds a career earned run average of 3.02. He appears to be taking the next step this season, going 8-4 in 14 starts with a 2.48 ERA that ranks third in the National League.

Hanson faces the Mariners for the first time and will square off against early AL Rookie of the Year candidate Pineda, who is 7-4 with a 2.45 ERA over his first 15 major league starts, with 12 of those quality outings.

The 22-year-old righty is coming off a no-decision versus the Nationals on Thursday as he gave up just four hits with nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings in his team's 1-0 loss. Pineda had beaten the Phillies in his previous outing, allowing a run on two hits and three walks over six innings to snap a two-game slide.

2-1 final score? (Atlanta with the 2 of course)

he makes a great point. but I have another question, what's a quick and (somewhat) easy way to learn sabermetrics? more importantly, are you know in the 2011 a "bad" baseball fan if you can't understand sabermetrics?

Learning more about baseball is a sin against being a baseball fan

That's an excellent question, actually. The best way to learn sabermetrics if you just want a quick overview of what it is, why it matters, and how to use it is probably through a book of some sort... there is a wealth of information online but it can be hard to figure out where to get started.

I certainly don't think you're a "bad" baseball fan if you can't understand sabermetrics. You're a bad GM (fantasy or otherwise) if you don't understand or acknowledge sabermetrics, but as a fan it really only changes what you get pissed off at your manager / organization / bench coach doing. Personally, though, I love learning more about the game, and to me figuring out exactly what makes people good at baseball, and having a better understanding of how they're doing what they're doing and whether they can keep it up, is really cool. Not everyone has to think that way.

1-0 Atlanta.

Then again who the fuck knows with the Mariners. Get owned by Vance Worley .... win against Cole Hamels.

It is a double edged sword though, you can become obsessive about the stats and forget to enjoy the game play. But baseball can be such a slow moving game, the metrics can give you something to do in between batters in a 1-0 game in the 8th inning.
Its funny, I know Alex Gonzales (Atlanta SS) is a swing away batter and is expected to strike out a lot, but I still yell at the TV in frustration when he swings at the ball rolling on the ground. The stats tell me he will do this but I still can't believe he would do that.

The 4 runs scored last night was more than i thought was going to be scored this entire series.

Phillies just put Ryan Madson on the DL. Who is going to close for them with Contreras and Lidge still out? Bastardo?
Matt Capps, who is available for trade. Capps & Cuddyer to the Phils.

Sabermetrics has greatly increased my love for baseball. I am still learning, I don't know everything, and I do still say a lot of stupid shit in relation to it - but the most important aspect is that there is a lot of important data that went from "that would be nice to know" to "here it is and here's how to figure it out". Less obvious items like BABIP and FIP have been awesome to track for me during a season for guys like Ogando and Colon. Words like regression were bandied about before but weren't meaningful like they are now. Besides, I've always been a math nerd so the marriage works for me.

Whats wrong with Mauer at first? Him at first gives him an additonal 3 to 4 years to play in the leagues....

Mariners fans LOVE them some sabermetrics.

And makes him just another 1B. Mauer's value comes from his bat at Catcher!

Wouldnt that save his knees and legs from squatting alot. Plus Morneau is gonna be the next Thome at DH
