It's about the Spanish civil war in the 1940s, as well as a girl's trip into a fantasy land. It's a story about growing up, the cruelty of human nature, questioning authority, believing in an ideal, and a whack of other themes. My favourite film from last year.

you forgot that it had no emotional core and seemed more like an exercise in detached, violent imagery than storytelling.

Funniest moment so far has been Steve Carell acting confused after Ellen's lame joke. That had my dad and I laughing, but otherwise the monologue was a snooze. So much material, so many targets, so little funny. Amazing.

Ellen stand-up is pretty funny, too. But this isn't.

I always thought Flags was the big commercial movie and Iwo Jima was the smaller documentary type film. Is this true?

Two sides of the same coin. One from the perspective of the Americans, and one from the perspective of the Japanese. Companion pieces... but Iwo Jima is a far more dense and complex film, imo.
