I'm sure that eventually they maybe could, but going from 45000 to 90000 is a bit too much in one step. I think it would make more sense to extend it gradually and make sure you always sell out during the process. And if you notice that you have reached the ceiling of your fanbase - you stop. It's better to have a few 100 empty seats instead of 20000 if you know what I mean.

Old Trafford was extended in a few steps too.

I guess. I guess I'm a bit spoiled in that regard.

Nou Camp's 98.800 & San Siro's (Giuseppe Meazza) 85.700 people capacity. (my teams)

The Nou camp is rarely full though and the San Siro is never ever full. Italians never go to football games unless they're very important.

What makes England so special is half of the teams have an average above 97% for every game. Italy's highest is 66%. Germany have about 5 above 97%.

Speaking of Liverpool they are 10th with 96.2%, I'd imagine they'd fill a 60k seater every week no problem.

We have the lowest percentage based on capacity, but the highest percentage based on population of the town/city. In the Premiership anyway.

FA Cup draw any second now.

We drew Chelsea/Spurs :(

I really, really don't want Chelsea. Despite their poor season, I just don't think we're a good team against them and would have a much better chance of beating United (though still a bad chance) or Spurs (ok chance).

Obviously Watford would have been the best draw and United fans will be happy, but despite what I've said above, I think this is the second best draw. I really don't hold out much hope for Middlesbrough beating Man Utd at Old Trafford, so if we got them that would have almost certainlt meant facing Man Utd.

I think there's a much better chance of Spurs beating Chelsea at White Hart Lane. I still expect Chelsea to win and Spurs' best chance was undoubtedly being 3-1 up away at half-time, but they're strong at home and we could still be facing them.

Sigh...if we make the final, we've done it the hard way.

So Chelsea v Man Utd for the premiership title.
Chelsea v Man Utd for the FA Cup.
Chelsea v Man Utd for Champions League?

Woohoo, we got watford! AS long as we beat middlesbrough at old trafford, which shouldnt be too much trouble, then we've got a guranteed spot in the final. No matgter how big the occasion is for watford, they wont be able to outplay United....or thats what I hope.

If Chelsea make it through to the next round, blackburn better win. I dont want to play chelski in the final of the FA cup. Its quite worry that we have a chance of playing chelsea in the final of the CL cup and the fa cup. There is still a lot to be done, but there's a decenty chance that it can happen, certainly in the fa cup. No disrespect to blackburn, but Chelsea are the much bigger favourites to win the game between them. You never know what can happen though.

well, at least you will have the backing of the entire nation (besides Chelsea fans. not that there are many)
Most of the chelsea fans will become united fans again if we win the premierleague or the Cl or both!

I didn't think a Utd fan would admit that there's a big portion of glory hunters in their fan base.

I agree.

There are glory hunters in every successful team. If someone doesnt admit that their team is supported by thousands of glory hunters, then their in denial or they are a glory hunter themselves.

I think if Chelsea go back to their previous way of having two teams who could challenge for the Champions League within their squad, they'll be back on top next year. Unless Liverpool do the same anyway.

I can't hear you

In a way the fa cup replay is a good thing. It might be an extra game, but it means that Paul scholes will only miss one premierleague game and thats against Bolton. We are playing Bolton at home, so scholes wont be necessary for that game.

Scott carson looks even more likely to leave Liverpool. reina is about to start talks regarding a new contract,s whihc goes to show that benitez wants him. I doubt Carson will want to sit on Liverpools bench. He knows that he can get first team football at almost any premiership club. If Lehman leaves arsenal, then Arsenal have a perfect opportunity to get one of the youngest and talented goalie's in the EPL.

I was just joking, of course there's glory hunters with any successful team, no question about it.

But the percentage is higher for clubs that did not have a very large fan base before they were successful. Of course that's not the case for Man Utd.

You know, I was thinking about how 3 Premiership sides are in the CL quarter-finals and I was looking at the teams and realised...England's (the national team) lack of success just doesn't make any sense.

First of all, the idea that big teams buying from abroad is hurting our international chances is bullshit. Maybe you can make that case with Arsenal, maybe, but they didn't even make it through. Of the three who did (and one rogue from Bayern, also in the quarters), check out my England squad:

GK

Foster
Carson

LB

A. Cole
Bridge

RB

Neville
Johnson

CB

Ferdinand
Terry
Carragher
Brown

LW

J. Cole
Richardson

RW

Pennant
Wright-Phillips

CM

Lampard
Gerrard
Hargreaves
Carrick
Scholes (not that he'll play for England anymore)

FW

Rooney
Crouch
Smith
Fowler

Now I've cheated a little there, some of them have played next to no (or just no) part in their side making it to the quarters, but I wanted to show how easy it is to make a full England squad from just those three top sides.

And it's not like a lot of them aren't key players to their team. In fact, the bolded ones below all are (or would be if fit):

------------------------Foster---------------------

Neville-----Ferdinand-------Terry-------A. Cole

Gerrard----Lampard----Hargreaves----J. Cole

--------------Rooney------Crouch----------------

Only in goal do we lack a kep player to their domestic team. And it's a tough position anyway, there can only ever be one on the field at once. I do think Foster will be a key United player in a couple of years time though.

You might question Crouch, as he didn't play against Barcelona really, but he did score 4 goals in 4 starts in the CL group phase to help them get the chance to face Barca in the first place.

So the question is, if so many English players are key to their domestic teams doing so well, why can't the success be repeated at international level? Possibly you can point to our lack of equally strong subs in some positions and bad injuries, but I think the main two reasons can be attributed to poor choices of coach and always playing the best players, rather than the best team.

Anyway, I hope that shuts up anyone reading this who thinks the lack of success at international level is down to foreigners in the English game (like we'd won anything for years before they'd come over anyway). People always use the example of Arsenal when saying this, but that's just conveniently overlooking the fact that other top teams with English players exist.

You sold him because his contract was going to run out and you didn't want to lose him on a free.

As for being past it, that depends if you see 13 goals from 20 starts as a poor amount for Madrid and 7 goals in 10 starts as bad for Newcastle. Personally I'd say 2 goals every 3 games is awesome, what with it being on course for 30+ goals a season.

We'll see what he's like after this injury, maybe he will be passed it, but he's shown no sign of that yet.

Here's the Europe squad to face United tomorrow:

Goalkeepers: Oliver Kahn, Grégory Coupet, Iker Casillas.
Defenders: Paolo Maldini, Jamie Carragher, Eric Abidal, Lilan Thuram, Carles Puyol, Marco Materazzi, Fabio Grosso.
Midfielders: Gianluca Zambrotta, Steven Gerrard, Juninho Pernambucano, Florent Malouda, Luis Miguel, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo.
Strikers: Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Alessandro Mancini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson.

I didn't give them those positions, just copied it straight off a site.

Boy, I can't wait for a game with 11 substitutions.

He missed too many chances for us, too many one on ones. The contract is one of the reasons.

I guess Benitez was lying then:

Real deal as Owen leaves Anfield

Michael Owen is to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid - much to the regret of Anfield boss Rafael Benitez.

Spaniard Benitez confirmed 24-year-old England striker Owen is to quit the club he has served throughout his professional career, with midfielder Antonio Nunez expected to move in the opposite direction.

The Reds manager made no secret of his disappointment at losing Owen, whose departure is the biggest in a glut of high-profile defections from Anfield in recent months.

Owen has been lured to the continent by Real with just a year left on his Anfield contract in a deal thought to be worth £8million to the Merseysiders and Benitez admits in the end he was unable to do anything to stop it going through.

The former Valencia coach, who replaced Gerard Houllier as Liverpool boss earlier this summer, said: 'When I came here he [Owen] had one year left on his contract.

'Real Madrid knew that, and when a big club like them come knocking you cannot control it.

'We were very happy with Michael - we wanted Michael here for a lot of years. But a long time had gone by without signing a new contract, and Madrid knew that. Last year Real Madrid tried to sign the player - and now they have done.'

Confirmation that Owen is to leave comes just two days after the departure from Liverpool of his fellow England player Danny Murphy, who has gone to Charlton.

England forward Emile Heskey was another notable summer transfer from Liverpool, also moving south to join the Reds' Barclays Premiership rivals Birmingham.

Benitez can at least console himself with the fact that Liverpool captain and midfield lynchpin Steven Gerrard resisted the overtures of cash-rich Chelsea to stay at Anfield.

Now, though, he has to come to terms with perhaps the most damaging departure of all.

'Michael will have a medical with Madrid before the deal is completed,' Benitez reported.

'I was very happy with Michael and I wanted him to stay. The problem was he only had a year left on his contract. Real Madrid started talking with his agent, and in the end it was impossible.

'The money from his sale will be used to balance the team. We still have good forwards here and a good team. We did our best to keep him - but, as I say, in the end it was a difficult situation for us.'

The manager will now have to rethink his gameplan at Liverpool without a player who had scored 158 goals in 297 matches for them.

'I must explain that we were very, very happy with Michael. He trains well and is a fantastic player,' said Benitez.

'For us it is bad - but at the end it was impossible. He will sign a contract with a good team in Real Madrid, and we need to use this money.'

Benitez made it clear he was hoping right up till the last minute to hang on to Owen - and he was planning ahead on that same premise.

'The only thing I can say is that last Tuesday I talked with him about the match and his position on the bench - everything was normal for him and me.

'Everyone talked about the situation afterwards. But for me it was very easy - he had only one year left, and Madrid called.'

Madrid have confirmed that Owen will undergo his medical this evening before signing for the club.

A statement on the club website, www.realmadrid.com read: 'Real Madrid CF informs that this Friday evening, the player Michael Owen will take his medical in the Zarzuela Clinic, in Madrid, the step prior to his signing as the new player of Real Madrid.'

FA takes no action over Mourinho

The Football Association has decided not to take any action against Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho after his alleged comments about referee Mike Riley.

Mourinho denied intending to offend Riley by using a Portuguese swear word during Sunday's 3-3 draw with Tottenham in the FA Cup quarter-final.

An FA spokesman said: "We have spoken to the referee who has clarified that there is no issue for us to pursue."

Mourinho added: "I say this kind of word 10 times in every 15 words."

He added: "I say it 50 times a game, 50 times in training. I don't want to be offensive. I can be emotional but I am polite."

Chelsea were losing 3-1 at the interval during Sunday's match but Mourinho insisted his use of the word was not directed at the official.

"The word can be abusive if you understand it as an abusive word," he stated.

"I tell the word to my players and myself when I am not happy. It is something I say when the ball hits the post."

Mourinho alleged that there had been controversy in all the Chelsea matches in which Riley had officiated this season.

"In my opinion, he gave too many decisions against us. I don't think they were big decisions but every free-kick in midfield was against Chelsea," he said.

"I am not saying they had a big influence on the result, I am not saying that, but too many free-kicks is a big frustration for the players.

"It breaks the intensity of the game and we are not happy. But that's football.

"All season was not an easy one in our matches with Mr Riley. Against Liverpool, Mohamed Sissoko should be sent off, he wasn't.

"One minute later Michael Ballack is out and we have to play with 10 men for a lot of the time.

"We go to Reading, we play with 10 men, we lose two goalkeepers and not even a yellow card and in this game, there were too many decisions against us.

"But what can I say? He is a good referee so I hope the next time we have him, things go back to normal."

Meanwhile, Mourinho brushed aside concerns over captain John Terry's long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Reports have suggested talks about a new deal for the England captain have stalled over the length of his contract extension and his pay demands.

However, Mourinho insisted: "John is on a long-term contract. His contract is until 2009. It is a long-term contract and he is a Chelsea player until then, minimum - so no problem.

"It is better if he has a contract until 2015, better for him and for Chelsea.

"But if he has a contract until 2009 and they take one more month or two or three, until they sign a new one, I don't see a drama."

I don't think we can claim the FA favour Chelsea now.
I didn't say that, in fact, I don't even know what he said to Riley and if what he said warranted anything.

There are however certain individuals where an FA charge is coming regardless of what was said and if what was said was offensive or not, the only thing that matters is that something was said in the first place, or so it seems.

Fair enough, I haven't followed Wenger close enough to know whether he's charged everytime or not.

I believe Mourinho called him a cunt sucking cuckold who, when he wasn't licking his wife's lover's semen from her, had his mouth round her arse swallowing her shit.

Or a wanker, whatever.

Actually, we have a 3500 better attendance over Wigan on average this season.

And at least we're going in the right direction, unlike most of the Premiership. This is how much the average attendance has gone up or down so far this season compared to the last:

Arsenal +21,859
Man Utd +7029
Villa +1579
Fulham +1336
West Ham +949
Blackburn +256

Portsmouth -51
Charlton -163
Everton -294
Tottenham -397
Chelsea -409
Liverpool -563
Middlesbrough -569
Newcastle -1669
Bolton -1983
Wigan -2897
Man City -3916

:lol

well if he called him a wanker I'm very surprised he didn't get charged.

It's not just Wenger btw, but he did get charged for complaining about the free-kick for Portsmouth that lead to a goal. He swears he didn't swear at the referee, so it's quite interesting. Paul Jewell got charged last month for complaining about the referee after the Arsenal game - he didn't even say anything, just that the referee sucked and that that's the norm lately in the Premiership (and he would be correct by saying that).

I didn't even know what puta meant until I just looked it up, maybe the ref didn't.
It gets used all the time here in California. Mostly as "hijo du puta" - meaning "son of a bitch." My all time favorite usage was watching Euro2000 with a Spanish friend of mine who's a sports journalist. During the Spain-France quarterfinal, Raúl skied a penalty over the bar. My friend screamed: "Rauuuuuuuuuuul! HIJO DE PUTA!" It was awesome. :lol

After doing 50 things that make us smile, we needed a good old-fashioned dose of bitterness. Who else is annoyed that Kieran Richardson will get a Premiership winner's medal?

* Anton Ferdinand, Nigel Reo-Coker, Bobby Zamora and the rest of West Ham's Baby Bentley brigade will get bigger contracts at bigger clubs next season.

* Kieran Richardson will collect a Premiership winner's medal.

* Michael Ballack gets paid £140,000 a week for smoking a big, fat cigar.

* Rio Ferdinand probably gets paid three times as much as Nemanja Vidic to be roughly a third as good.

* Liverpool have lost their last two games and yet somehow this has made them the best team in Europe.

* Phil Neville is still more likely to play at left-back for England than Gareth Barry, Matt Taylor, Leighton Baines or Nicky Shorey.

* Frank Lampard will get voted in as World Player, European Player, PFA Player or some other such nonsense of the Year. Michael Essien will get nothing.

* Micah Richards will join Chelsea this summer.

* As one of the best players outside of the top four, Dimitar Berbatov will undoubtedly be linked to all four of the Premiership's elite this summer.

* Kevin Nolan actually gets paid by the BBC to do that 'column'.

* Jamie Redknapp actually gets paid by Sky for his 'expert' view.

* Bolton are probably going to play European football next year. People in Spain will actually think this is how we play football in England.

* Steve Coppell has as much chance of winning Manager of the Year as Alan Curbishley.

* Mark Viduka will get a big, fat contract somewhere, having tried for approximately the last three months of his current deal.

* Harry Redknapp will proclaim avoiding relegation has made Portsmouth's season a success, despite the fact that they self-combusted in January when in fifth.

* We will still have to read 427 more 'Wembley delay' stories before it's actually ready.

* Arsenal have won nothing but their fans still believe they play the best football in the Premiership.

* Michael Owen's return to full training will be watched by 47,000 jobless Geordies. And Jim White.

* Anyone who ever criticises Cristiano Ronaldo is accused of xenophobia born of England's World Cup exit to Portugal. No, sometimes he's just a nasty little diving git.

* We can't win with England - we want them to get to Euro 2008 but we really, really want to see that smug grin wiped off Steve McClaren's face.

"Top clubs want good player"

Bastards!

* Liverpool have lost their last two games and yet somehow this has made them the best team in Europe.

Errr.. no it hasn't. Neither has anyone or any Liverpool staff claimed to be :lol We're not the best team in Europe, however we did beat the best team in Europe over 2 legs and was frankly the better side (in both matches and we were the better side against Man Utd, but we lost - shit happens).
