Hello, lads. Just wanted to drop in and suggest that in the spirit of friendship, we all ridicule Spurs and take pleasure from their defects.

On that front, Theres a rumour in the Mirror today:

The rumour is that Arsenal's poor start to the season at their new ground is because a group of steelworkers, who were hired to construct the ground, placed a Tottenham shirt, scarf and some badges in a box and bricked it up somewhere in the Emirates Stadium.

:lol

let me just say this

YOU'RE JUST A SMALL TEAM IN STOCKPORT
SMALL TEAM IN STOCKPORT, YOU'RE JUST A SMALL TEAM IN STOCKPORT

Come on lads, what's going on with this thread? Let's discuss something. I promise not to insult anyone save for Spurs players now that van Needlepenis has gone to trip over Madrid.

It's gone way too quiet in this thread, you're right brooklygooner.

Anyway, I just finished watching the BBC Panorama program about bungs in English football. Just again confirms to me how corrupt the ****ing agents are. Of course everything regarding the managers seemed blown out of proportion, but I can see a few heads rolling.

Namely big Sam, who didn't come off well in the program. I don't quite know what to think about this particular thing, they seemed to single him out. I think it's his son alone who did the dodgy stuff, how much he knew about it can only be guessed. Harry Redknapp didn't do anything wrong at all, yet of course they tried to imply he did. ****ing sensationalists.

Also Arnesen and Chelsea could be ****ed for trying to tap up yet another player. Let's see if they get their three points deducted as promised when they got fined for the Cole tapping up saga.

I would be interested which manager of one of the "worlds biggest clubs" it was who didn't show up for the alleged meeting for his second 50k though.

edit: the first article shows up at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5360700.stm

I wonder if they are as correct as with the Arsenal drama they started a couple of months back. How ****ing exciting. Jokin aside, the FA has to sort out this ****ing agent situation - people like this ruin the game. Did I say **** enough btw?

Anybody watching the BEEB Panarama Football Bungs show tonight. It was a bit of a let down after all the hype, many names left, blacked out but Bolton and Chelsea could be ****ed.
Big Sam and his son are up shit creek in a sinking boat and Frank Arnessen is on tape offering 150,000 for that 15yr Middelsborough player.

I was always sure it was just Little Sam Allardyce being the dirty one, but I didn't watch this show.

In MLS news, the New York Red Bulls had the groundbreaking for their new stadium in Harrison, New Jersey today. YAY! I couldn't make it but here's a first hand account:

Politicians, soccer executives, media members and hundreds of Red Bull fans gathered in Harrison, NJ today to celebrate the groundbreaking to Red Bull Park, the first component of a $1 billion redevelopment of the Hudson County town across the Passaic River from Newark.

The trip from midtown Manhattan took about 35 minutes to get to Harrison on the PATH train with a change of trains in Journal Square. The Harrison station, which is to undergo a $50 million facelift, left little to be desired, and the ten-minute walk to the stadium site took fans past energy substations and construction parking lots. A decades-old brick wall down the left side of the street gave way to a four-story abandoned warehouse, where signs and red and yellow balloons directed visitors around the corner to a full-on construction site where bulldozers sat at the ready and construction workers surveyed the land.

A "Welcome to the Site of Red Bull Park" sign greeted visitors, and a samba drummer and two bikini-clad samba dancers entertained fans waiting for the program to begin. A bulldozer and soccer goal with Red Bull park signs on them awaited the golden ceremonial shovels. Longtime Metro and Red Bulls fans mingled with Shep Messing, Bogie of the Cosmos, and Nick Sakiewicz, to whom the day clearly belonged.

Three large tents kept most the crowd out of the hot midday sun. Fernando Fiero of Univison's Republica Deportiva had made the trip from Miami to emcee the program. Fiero professed to being a "Jersey Boy," who arrived in the US from Argentina in 1980 with little English, and settled in Hoboken before his success in the Hispanic media world. He told the crowd that MLS was his favorite soccer league, and added that he missed his beloved Miami Fusion. His love of the league may more to do with Univision's new MLS contract, however, than his passion for American futbol.

Nick Sakiewicz was next to speak, and he noted the trials and tribulations he'd experienced since launching the stadium effort in 2000. Love him or hate him, Sakiewicz has stuck with the project through the days that it seemed unlikely to materialize. Sakiewicz noted that Red Bull's infusion of cash made it possible for the project to move forward. One wonders if Uncle Phil would have made the project a reality if Red Bull had not stepped up in March to purchase the team.

Numerous NJ politicos got their moment in the sun, including former Governor Richard Codey, who kicked off with a few off-color jabs at his disgraced predecessor Jim McGreevey.

MLS Commissioner Garber noted the day's importance for the future of MLS and American Soccer, and confirmed that the league would have 16 teams by the 2010 season.

Sadly, it was time to head back to work before I could see the shovels hit the dirt, but camera crews from SNY, NJN, and channels 7 and 47 were on hand to record the event and surely will have coverage tonight, as well as the major print media for tomorrow's papers.

It's a new era for Red Bull. Here's to hoping the investment of the field will be matched by an investment on the field.

Finally, a soccer-specific stadium coming to my area (in 2 years). Gridiron lines can kiss my ass.

why do you hate us so much?

have we said anything harsh about the obscure games you are watching? :D

just kidding. I dunno, usually mama smurf will analyse the **** out of the games but he's not been here. that seems to slow the thread down

:lol :lol :lol "van Needlepenis"...

It's been amusing seeing the media doing an about face since Sunday's game. Before the Gunners were too young, weren't aggressive enough, still lacked the pieces to even contend for a top four spot. Now all of a sudden they're the world's best example of the beautiful game, while one United loss has the media yapping on about how their midfield is shit and how Rooney is in a slump. Same ole' shit.

Wenger is pleading to Arsenal fans to refrain from using nasty words in their songs. Apparantely the away end was belting out some doozies, including a couple of homo-laiden numbers for Cashley Mole. While I admire Wenger's attempt to try and keep things as clean as possible, it ain't gonna happen...and frankly it'll probably get worse at Stamford Bridge, though I'm sure the Blues fans who actually show up to that game will have a few songs for Gallas.

I heard the post game interview with Wenger and when asked about the Cole Homo songs he said he didn't hear it - but that the fans were brilliant, but of course he encourages positive songs rather than these kind of songs. I think the media is making this into a plead that was never there.

It's football after all, it wouldn't be fun without these chants.

I just dont understand the point in following european games, unless:

a) Youre european
b) you live in europe
c) you lived in europe

You cant go to their games. You cant listen on radio. You have to jump through hoops to watch on TV. You cant rag on your friends about your team doing well. You cant go to the games.

Makes more sense to follow the US or Mexican leagues, since they actually play games you can go to.

Hell, follow the Costa Rican game, since they play some games in the US for the concacaf cup.

and european style is boring. lets hold the ball in the back for the next 10 minutes!

Do you follow the MLS? I've been wondering if I'm the only one around here. I know there was a Chicago Fire fan here once. Plus, I saw a Houston Dynamo avatar once. Any MLS fans lurking this thread, speak out! USL counts too.

I was kidding, of course you would watch local games primarily.

I am living in England, so that's what I do as well I guess.

you should however at least attempt to watch some premiership games. If you think this is a defensive league you are quite wrong.

It's quite different from the rest of Europe - definitely the fastest league around.

Arsenal are the most exciting team in the world to watch. Yep, more then Barca, Argentina and Brazil, and certainly more exciting then some division three level Mexican squad. And since I can watch three EPL games a week at home and a good number of the Arsenal games on digital TV at the bar, it's pretty easy to follow them. I get zero US and Mexican league games at home, so until Toronto FC enters the picture I've got no reason to care about that stuff.

QFT

Oh, and for any Americans that enjoy soccer documentaries, ESPN2 is showing Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos tomorrow at 9 P.M. I already saw it in theatres and I'm heading to the Red Bulls game tomorrow against New England so I'll say that it's a great movie and should not be missed by any soccer fan.

Well there's the Toronto Lynx, but you shouldn't even bother with them anymore as Toronto FC is coming around.

Partially. Im a Revs fan by default, living in Boston and all. Havent been to a game though (damn you gilette stadium). Once they get their new home somewhere closer to Boston, I can go visit them.

Living in england? Then by all means follow the league. I dont watch premiership, but I do watch the UEFA league, which of course includes british teams.

And how would you know this? If they dont air south american games in toronto, how would you know what theyre like?

Id hope it would be more exciting than a division 3 team, regarless of the country of origin.

Now, play Chivas vs Arsenal, and you have a game.

Is Gilette Stadium like Giants Stadium where the only way to get there is through car? That's one reason I hate going to games right now. It's going to be solved when Red Bull Park opens, but that's in 2 seasons. :( Apparently, the Revs front office is trying to get the stadium built in Boston so that's good to hear.

Sort of. MBTA runs commuter rail straight to the stadium....but only for Pats games and select concerts.

And I have no car....

That sucks. Can you at least catch some of their games on TV?

Also, I've been quite excited by the Red Bull Park groundbreaking and the thought of a new home so it's time to post some pictures of the new Toronto stadium just for Shinobi.

Same way you know that every soccer fan here cares more about transfers then the games themselves.

I walked right past the stadium construction during the summer on a couple of occassions...in July during the running of the Champ Car race, and late August during the CNE. Even during those six weeks they made pretty decent progress, and based on the level shot it's clear that progress is continuing well. I'm really looking forward to the new stadium, and seeing MLS action in person.

Believe me, it gets ****ing annoying listening to that every weekend, especially when he forces the issue with names that don't fit at all with the songs.

I can't agree with that at all. I'm from Costa Rica and if I stick to watching only local football I'd go crazy because of how mediocre it is(and yet we're still better than the MLS :-P).

I can watch 3-4 EPL games per weekend, the same for la Liga and maybe 1-2 for Serie A, 4-5 games for each Champions League matchday and that's only Europe. I can watch a lot of Argentinian league matches, as well as Mexican league, watch all the different South American cups(Libertadores, Sudamericana), etc. and I enjoy the hell out of it.

It gives me a wide understanding of football around the world and you can easily identify with teams that you can watch almost on a weekly basis. If I want to go to the stadium I go and support my local team. In fact I live practically behind the stadium, so it's pretty easy to go but I can still enjoy watching football from everywhere else without having a direct interaction with it.

Everyone here is fan of some team(s) in other countries and we talk trash and have fun about it with friends. The international leagues are widely discussed on radio and TV and they're always a hot topic of discussion amongst sport fans. It's all in the football culture of the country basically.

As for comparing mexican football to lower division, people couldn't be more wrong. The Mexican League is good, very good in fact. During the last few years it has become probably the best league in America and you can be sure to catch some quality games every weekend.

Hopefully the team starts off pretty well, and you don't have to put up with football lines everywhere. Are you considering joining a supporters group or no?

Well, we will find out once again at the end of the year in the World Club Cup, who plays the best game.

South America, North America, Europe.
International - America - Barcelona

(Sorry Asia, Africa and Oceania)

I don't mind if someone supports teams from other countries or continents *points to avatar* but I just hate when people support teams from Europe while not even acknowledging the local teams.

The FA is starting an investigation into the Panorama claims.

It's time they start doing something about the situation with the agents. My hopes are slim however.

I would support a local MLS team if it were local. New Jersey isn't New York, therefore they are not the New York Red Bulls, they are Red Bull Suburbia. MLS is so shoddily run I can't get into it anyway.

As for South American games, James Sinclair I'm calling you out -- always asking you to discuss Libertadores and Sudamericana games and you claim to never see them. I catch the odd Brasilian derbi as well, and I'm happy to ridicule Corinthians whenever you like.

As for the Cole chants, it's ****ed up, and shouldn't happen, certainly not from a team such as Arsenal. Let's leave that to the sheepshaggers from Yorkshire.

Incidentally, how do the following people get jobs: John Gregory, Peter Reid, Bryan Robson.

John Gregory will become a radio commentator for some rubbish like Talk Sport.
Peter Reid will move to something like Sky Sports News on weekends to report on matches.
Bryan Robson will get picked up by ITV.

All guesses

Well, they were the New York/New Jersey Metrostars....

I might not be able to see all of them, but I listen on the radio. I did watch most of the final libertadores games.

Unfortunatly, Ive only ever been to one Libertadores game. At least it was the semi-final.

Anybody listening, watching the Liverpool vs Newcastle game. Alonso has jusy scored the goal of the season already.
A 70 yard shot/lob from his own half that went over Harper and into the net. Unreal.
Hopefully it'll be on Youtube tomorrow.

:lol No football lines...it's a soccer specific stadium. I'll probably join their club membership, though I have no plans to buy a season ticket at this time.

Carling Cup draw takes place on Saturday. I only mention that because I reckon my boy Theo Walcott will feature heavily in those tilts.

Ok, Ive sort of changed my mind. If your team plays under the following conditions, feel free to follow a second team.

1) Other league logo on field

2) Goal area difficult to see

3) Non-playing team is represented

4) Strange numbers appear on field

Incidently, Paraná Clube (Brazil) and the revs scored at the exact same time.

The panorama thing didnt prove anything. There was no concrete evidence that suggests that sam allerdyce or any other manager took bungs. It did suggest that it was possible that some managers have taken bungs and Im sure that several have, but there was no actual proof. The part with harry redknapp was ridiculous. Just because he accepted an offer to go to germany and stay in a very good hotel does not prove anything at all.

There was this survey which asked what fat sam likes more: Bungs or buns :lol

I hope Pearce doesn't get sacked from Man City. I think he's a good manager who has done good things for them, they're just in a slump at the moment.

oh absolutely, that's what I said. The only thing this program showed was the situation with the agents. It didn't prove anything about big sam and personally I think it's a joke that they singled him out.

The Redknapp thing was absolutely ridiculous, he didn't do anything.

Just a few hours away from the first Old Firm fixture of the season. I'm planning to hit a Rangers supporters club bar for this one. Never seen a Rangers/Celtic tilt live before, and I can't wait to soak it all in. I'll watch the Gunners re-airing later in the day, who BTW will have Henry and van Persie available as they host Sheffield United.
