so, my team (werder) is facing barca and chelsea. barca again sigh...we could use some luck once in a while

but honestly, we MAY have a chance to reach second place if we continue the way we used to play in the last years. don't fear the big names werder! we've got a good team, we may advance, although it doesn't seem very likely. really doesn't matter who comes fourth, this is the DEATH GROUP

To be honest, even though Celtic got Man Utd, I'd say they didn't do too badly considering some of the other groups!

That said, unless they improve markedly they'll still go out - Man Utd & Benfica FTW!

I don't think Arsenal can complain about their group too much.
I dunno - Porto are always dangerous (though not as good as a few years ago), Moskow are an up-and-coming squad, and Hamburg are one of the more difficult 4th pot teams. It's not the worst group out there, but it's by no means a cakewalk. Tough but fair.

Mama Smurf, I think it'd be better if we drop the argument, it could go on forever. You make some good arguments, and so do I (atleast I think I do :p). Besides, there's also the emotional aspect of it, I just never though Ooijer would leave us like this.

Anyway, with the transferfees of Ooijer and Vennegoor we will have gotten close to €10m. Not all of that will be spend, but Westerhof (president of PSV) and Koeman have already stated they will buy a replacement for Vennegoor.

Well, on to the CL draw. I'll take them apart one by one (bolded ones advance, italic one goes to UEFA cup):

GROUP A
Barcelona
Chelsea
Bremen
Levski

Barca and Chelsea meet again. Whatever results they get against eachother, they'll both qualify. Werder could prove an outsider though, and shouldn't be underestimated. Levski shouldn't be too much of a problem, although in Sofia any team can have a rough match.

GROUP B
Internazionale
Bayern
Sporting
Spartak Moskva

Clear-cut favorites are Inter and Bayern, I don't think anyone is going to argue that. Now who'll get third place? I'm betting on Spartak. They have some great strikers (Cavanaghi anyone?), and I think an overall edge over Sporting.

GROUP C
Liverpool
PSV

Bordeaux
Galatasaray

Liverpool are the one and only favorite here. Still, they could have problems with any of the other teams in their away matches. PSV for example beat AC milan 1-0 at home, and playing in Turkey is always very hectic. PSV, Bordeaux and Galatasaray will be fight for second place, with me giving PSV the edge over Bordeaux, and giving Bordeaux the edge over Galatasaray. Funny fact: Galatasaray's current trainer (Belgian coach Eric Gerets) was once player (85-92) and coach (99-02) of PSV.

GROUP D
Valencia
Roma

Olympiacos
Shakhtar

In my opinion perhaps the most balanced group of them all. Valencia and Roma will struggle with especially Shaktar, while Olympiacos can be a menace to all three other teams.

GROUP E
Real Madrid
Lyon

Steaua
Dynamo Kyiv

Clear favorites in this group are Real and Lyon, and I expect both of them to deliver. It'll be an east-european fight for third place, and I'm giving Kiev the edge here over Steaua.

GROUP F
Man. United
Celtic
Benfica
Kobenhavn

Man United are the number one favorites here, they shouldn't have much trouble ranking first. Benfica will have to put up a good fight against especially Celtic, but they'll manage. Kobenhavn will fail to make an impact (win against Ajax was pure luck).

GROUP G
Arsenal
Porto

CSKA Moskva
Hamburg

Another balanced group, although Arsenal and Porto seem favorites. CSKA in particular will put up a good fight in Moscow, and they have the quality up front to finish the job. They are certainly an outsider to beat Porto and take second place. Hamburg in it's current form will struggle to make an impression, even though they have signed an excellent replacement for Boulahrouz (they bought Mathijsen for €9m from AZ).

GROUP H
Milan
Lille

AEK
Anderlecht

Least interesting group imo. Milan will dominate. Lille will place second, they have a good team and are often underestimated. Anderlecht will struggle for third place.

Wow, AC Milan shouldn't even be in the CL and now they get the easiest group of them all. BS! Why are they seeded anyway? UNBELIEVABLE!

As for Madrid's group. It's accessible. Certainly not easy with a team like Lyon in it and two other competent squads, but the job can be done.

I think you should give your team little more credit. I have high-hopes for Bremen this year, and I think they'll be taking Liga title. I think Bremen might be the team that might take CL by storm this year.

****ing Milan.

Man Utd probably have the best group of the English teams. Normally I'd say playing a team like Celtic is a disadvantage because they want to beat English opposition so badly, but as second seeds and not a great side, it's a great draw. I doubt they'll have it all their own way, Benfica caused problems last year, but they'll surely get through.

Chelsea's group is tough. Not horrible, someone like Galatasary as 4th seed would have done that, but Barca and Bremen are dangerous. The latter must be the most attacking side in Europe, so I really can't wait to watch the games in this group. Chelsea looked lacking up front against Barca last year, but with Shevchenko, Kalou and Ballack, that's no longer the case...but can they settle as a team before the games?

I don't know what to say about Liverpool's group. Every side there could upset them, but it would be an upset. Still the strongest side, but it won't be a shock if they don't make it.

Arsenal have been unlucky enough to get two champions and probably the toughest of the 4th seeds. I felt they played best last season when their opposition thought they were better than them and they could be underdogs and hit on the counter...not sure how things will go as favourites.

Do we have the fixtures yet? The first games are only a few weeks away.

Martins has signed for Newcastle. Can't wait to see him, we'll hopefully find out if he's 21 or older in a few years time.

Time for predictions! All in particular order, of course the bolded teams proceed to the next round.

Great game being played right now, Sao Paulo - Parana. The score is 1-2.

If Parana keeps the game they become first in the league. if Sao paulo wins or ties they remain first.

Both teams are playing with all they have

Im happy with the draw. We have quite easy teams in our group, although we did lose to benfica last year, however I doubt we will make the same mistakes we did last season.

Mourinho must be very pissed off. He was angry that chelsea were not in the top seed which does seema bit odd considering their champions league record for the last few years has been impressive.

Ac Milan are lucky as usual. Not only are they very lucky to even be in the CL, but they have been given a piss easy group. Lucky bastards.

UEFA cup draw is happening right now, theres a stream on UEFA.com ....but its pretty ****ing dull i wouldnt bother.

Spurs and West Ham just missed out on being seeded so both teams are in for tough games, but they've both avoided all the really big teams it seems. Blackburn and newcastle got seeded so they are beign drawn against comedy teams mainly, blackburn have got Hearts in their pool, probably the toughest.

Salzburg (AUS) vs Blackburn
West Ham vs Palermo

At least its not Feyenoord. Still though, tough tie.

Blackburn v Salzburg in the UEFA cup. This one won't be easy Mama, even though it sounds like it.

They have bought quite a few players this summer, are managed by Trappatoni and Matthaeus. I think there's about one austrian left in the starting line up. And also, I don't like them - which is usually a sign of a team not doing too bad.

Best of luck.

I wouldn't much care if we went out first round to be honest. It'd be great to have a long run and impress everyone, but I really do think that teams that have runs in Europe suffer in their league. Particularly sides with small squads or lacking strength in their subs.

wow - just saw the Thatcher challenge ... christ.

Anyways, tournament tomorrow, i'm captaining our A team - lolz - i'm sure this'll end well! can't wait.

Nicolas Anelka will become Bolton Wanderers' record signing when Sam Allardyce agreed to pay £8 million to Turkish club Fenerbahce for him. Aren't we giving Fenerbahce more than what they paid for him? It seems like Allardyce is desperate. I don't mind that he's coming to the Reebok but I just believe he's being overpaid.

Don't yahoo add new players? I don't see why they wouldn't, but I can't find Martins or Kujt or any new player signed since the thing started.

I'm sure I saw Owen having previous season stats when initially choosing a team, so I guess they must have done last year as he was signed well after the Premiership started. Unless they just tracked his stats without adding him, so they could show how many poitns he would have gotten.

EDIT: Ah, on the Leaders message board I found a post which funnily enough specifically mentions Kuyt and Martins as I did (guess everyone's thinking about them), saying in the past new players have only been available after they've actually played a game.

ok, I couldn't resist and put Henry in my fantasy team. Of course that meant that I had to reshuffle my entire team in order to afford him - so it was probably the stupidest decision possible.

Ah, who cares.

I GOT THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD
I GOT THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD
I GOT THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD
I GOT THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD

edit: I also put Ashley Cole in, he should only miss one more game (whatever happens) and is dirt cheap.

I will not change anymore for the rest of the season, at least that's what I'm saying.

I'll be making changes to my team nearly everyweek depending on the fixtures. For instance if Arsenal are going to play sheffield united, Im going to try and put as many arsenal players in my team as I can.

England squad's to be announced today for the qualifiers. Don't quite understand why, if he announced it tomorrow after most of the games are out of the way he won't have to worry about changing it for injuries so much.

With Rooney suspended, Owen injured and now Ashton too, there's room for another striker. I imagine it'll be Johnson, though I'd say Harewood and even Zamora have a chance. They're only going to be 4th choice strikers, it shouldn't make too much difference.

Gary Neville is out and so is Carragher, so that takes away two possible right backs. Young will certainly be in the squad and I'd guess maybe Brown will be a back up right back rather than centre back, but as Carrick is now fit McClaren might decide to play Hargreaves at right back and Carrick in the middle, just while we have this situation. He could even go for Phil Neville.

It's possible we'll see a new centre back, depends what he does at right back. If he goes with Hargreaves and Young, we'll have Terry, Ferdinand, Brown and Dawson for centre backs, which is probably enough.

Can't see much happening elsewhere. Joe Cole is still injured, so Downing will be fine but maybe Richardson won't make it this time. The squad has to be smaller than for the last game, so some players have to be dropped, particularly with Carrick returning. I think Wright-Phillips will probably miss out, there's no real need for 3 right sided midfielders as Gerrard is in that role at the moment and Lennon is second choice.

Man, I hope McClaren hasn't named his squad while I was writing this...

EDIT: phew

EDIT 2: Forgot about Beattie, that's another option.

Squad:

Robinson (Tottenham)
Kirkland (Liverpool)
Foster (Man Utd)

A Cole (Arsenal)
Young (Charlton)
P Neville (Everton)
Bridge (Chelsea)
Terry (Chelsea)
Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Brown (Man Utd)
Dawson (Tottenham)

Lampard (Chelsea)
Hargreaves (Bayern Munich)
Carrick (Man Utd)
Gerrard (Liverpool)
Jenas (Tottenham)
Wright-Phillips (Chelsea)
Richardson (Man Utd)
Downing (Middlesbrough)
Lennon (Tottenham)

Defoe (Tottenham)
Bent (Charlton)
Johnson (Everton)
Crouch (Liverpool)

Bit confused, I was sure you could only have 23 men squads even for qualifiers. Oh well, it's allowed him to keep most of the players he could keep. I don't think anyone who was there last time has missed out except due to injury. Neville appears to be reserve right back.

Carlos Tevez's agent says his player is very close to a switch to an English club. Now that might be bullshit, you know what agents are like, he could just be trying to secure a better deal for his player elsewhere.

If it is true, it must be Chelsea or Man Utd. Spurs could probably afford him but I don't see him going there, Liverpool have got their strikers and I doubt Arsenal can afford it unless they sell Cole/Reyes in time.

If it is Man Utd, it would make sense as Ferguson doesn't seem to agree with me over his striking options. I think they're fine, but as he's playing Giggs up front with Saha while Rooney is suspended, he clearly doens't agree.

Is there any source of info you are using to know which are the most probable formation settings for the next match ?
I know tons of them for the spanish Liga but no idea about Premier...I like the team I have set for this week but it would be kinda embarassing to have players that are not supposed to play :P

Thanks

As much as Fergie says to the contrary he's not going to put Rossi out there unless the game is either meaningless or semi meaninless ( ie early round carling cup/fa cup). I wouldn't be at all surprised if we did get Tevez. I know he's a great player but I was really looking foward to seeing Rossi develop and seing Alan Smith get in some games.

Im assmuing this is the way he ranks his strikers at the moment

Rooney
Saha
Giggs
Solskjaer
Smith* * will prolly be # 3 once he's fit.

Rossi.

Oh well : \

If you go here http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/default.stm the day before matches, you can click on games possibly involving your players. Won't tell you for certain, but you'll get some idea.

Concerning Tevez, some Dutch media are saying that he will be bought by Chelsea and then loaned out to Stade Rennes (wtf?). I'm hoping the first part is true, with then PSV being the club Tevez's loaned out to. ;)

Not really expecting Tevez to come to Eindhoven. I'm really excited about finding out which striker PSV will come up with now that Vennegoor has left. Rumours aplenty, with possible candidates being Carew, Eduardo (who scored against Arsenal last week), Kerzhakov (who was linked with Newcastle before they bought Martins), and Kerlon (although that is probably a made-up rumour).

Barca - Sevilla 0-1 (Renato) hehe.

Chelsea and Man Utd wont buy a striker like tevez and then loan him out. Chelsea only have three strikers so if they get a fourth they will keep him. United have five strikers, but rossi doesnt have the experience, solskjaer is too old and Im not sure if smith is capable of getting enough goals. Bringing in tevez would be good and bad. The good thing is that he is a good player and will give us more striking options, his arrival will also let us loan out rossi, but it will also mean that either solskjaer or smith will get very limited time to play and both of those players will have limited time to play in the current squad.

I am totally pissed that Sevilla has won us...If there is one team I hate with passion this is Sevilla (Betis is also on the same league).

But well, we played horribly in what it might be the worst match I have seen this 2006 in the Barça side..

Shit...

That Poulson guy for Seville was ****ing awesome. I don't know who got man of the match, but if it wasn't him then it's bullshit.
