Essien as right midfield? See, I'd vote for Essien but he'll be in the centre for me, so how will his votes add up? In fact, he's such an all rounder I could put him in either CM position, but I'd probably choose DCM, whereas others might not.

I don't think the market's that inflated really. I mean, back in 1999 - 2001 Vieri went to Inter for £31m, Crespo moved to Lazio for £36m, Luis Figo moved to Madrid for £37m and Zidane went to Madrid for £46m. And those are just the world record transfers, Ferdinand joined United for £31m in 2002.

yeah, that's true. Although it could be argued that they were a different calibre. But in hindsight they weren't, with the exception of Zidane and Figo.

Wait, lol. Do you want us to use the players on your list, or make a huge list like you did on our own? ;x
nah, use my players. unless you think a team has a much better one at a certain position.

that's the thing, I wanted to put him DCM too. But who would we put on the right? Lampard with Ballack in the centre? SWP? Difficult to choose ...

Maybe just put more Chelsea players in CM and none on the right. Otherwise it's kind of hard on Chelsea as they play a different formation.

I'm baaaaaaaaaack! Just drove up from LA last night after four days of watching the Gold Cup and hanging out in the sun. The US won 1-0 on Thursday over Guatemala and 2-0 over T&T. Not the greatest performances, but Bradley managed to rotate just about everyone on the squad and I can't complain too much if we're winning. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow from the HDC so everyone can have a look at what the stadium is like. Not a lot of US fans there - mostly Guatemalans and El Salvadorians.

Oh, and :lol at Mexico.

Errr, so no news for Arsenal on the transfer market other than Haavard Nordtveit signing and Ribery now being off the table in on his way to Munich?

Obviously Arsene is back in the groove though. I expect us to sign a 15 year old Swede, a 17 year old Dane who is blind but has a in built sonar which would make the best bats in the world jealous and a Finnish kid who hasn’t even been born yet.
.

Malouda, maybe

So what's the deal with Bentley not playing for the U-21's? Is he holding out for a full national team call up?

Btw - we watched a rebroadcast of the England-Slovakia(?) match from last week at the bar on Thursday before the US game. The England U-21 team is a lot of fun to watch. Plenty of attacking talent there...

thanks for the link, pretty good ticker there.

I don't think the game is on anywhere in English. I can't watch in Chinese, I tried but I can't stand it.

No problem. Yeah, UEFA does a pretty good job with their tracker - I use it on Champions League gamedays when I can't watch.

Sounds like a pretty tight match so far - one goal may be enough to steal all three points.

Henry agrees terms with Barcelona, according to France Football

Madrid - Thierry Henry has agreed to sign a three-year contract with Spanish giants Barcelona, according to the digital version of France Football on Monday evening. According to France Football, Henry's representatives have just reached agreement with Barca sporting director Txiki Begiristain for a lucrative contract until June 2010.

Now Barcelona - keen to rebuild their squad after a disappointing season - will have to negotiate with Arsenal, Henry's club.

The digital version claims that Barca are prepared to pay around 25 million euros for the Frenchman, who will be 30 in August.

various other links popping up too.

this is getting a bit scary now

edit: also, if he in fact already negotiated with them he must have had the clubs permission to do so.

The French attacker found an agreement with Barcelona on the basis of contract a three year old for what can become the transfer of the year. Still miss the green light of Arsenal where it had prolonged until 2011. "Henry very close to Barcelona", it is what reveals France Football in its number to appear this Tuesday. In the article of Paco Aguilar, the correspondent of Bi-hebdo in Barcelona, appears a beam of indices incentive to think that the arrival of the attacker of Arsenal in Spain seems from now on imminent. After the recent declarations of international French who let plane a doubt about his future at the "Gunners", an important stage was reached last week at the time of the meeting between the agent of the player, Jerome Anderson and the sporting director of Barça, Txiki Beguiristain. An agreement would have been reached at the end of this exchange between the two parts, on the basis of contract of three years (more one year in option) and incomes of ten million euros per season, superiors of almost 40% with those currently touched by Thierry Henry in Arsenal. If the transfer appears in very good way, all the questions are not solved for as much. It is not at all in the intention of the English club to let leave its striker high-speed motorboat under contract until June 2011 without requiring a strong sum. The year spent, it had been question of 40 million euros; today, with the approach of about thirty, Thierry Henry always represents much money, and it is not known as only the 25 million euros that Barcelona wants to propose in Arsenal is sufficient. The business which had failed one year ago in any case left well to be concluded this time, as of the moment when the French is decided to break the bond with Arsenal which it had joined in 1999.

If it's indeed true, obviously I'm not happy to lose one of the best players in the world and somebody who's done so much for the club in all those years.

But if he thinks that Arsenal is David Dein and he has to move on because of that then it's for the better. And obviously Wenger felt the same way or else he would not have been allowed to negotiate.

It's sad but what can you do, now we need a world class replacement.

Obviously I'm still hoping it's not true, but this seems legit.

France Football is a pretty legit source. If this is true, Arsenal still have to agree to the transfer, but there's no sense in keeping him if he wants to go.

I don't believe anything until Henry himself or Arsenal come out and confirm it. If it is true, then he's not as great a leader as I presumed. To leave a club just because of one man on the board, and in a time when we need him the most is the wrong thing to do.

Wait, wasn't Henry just saying he can't wait to play in Arsenal's new kit? lol

Why would he be saying something like that if he's already in negotiations? Also, isn't this normally done the other way round? You know, teams agree terms and then the player does later? :-/

apparently Henry just appeared on Eurosport (during some friendly) and said "wait and see" regarding the Barcelona story.

Seems true enough.

That's the thing. There are quotes coming from both directions claiming he's leaving, he's staying, he's leaving, he's staying. Honestly, I'm not getting upset about anything until it becomes official, if it's even happening. Like I said, it would be a terrible move for him to pull right now, especially after all the club has done for him.

to be fair, he's done as much for the club as the club for him.

I agree that it's not the nicest move to go now, but if he feels he has to go it's better for all parties involved. We don't need somebody who doesn't want to be here and will cope without him.

Of course, I'd be more than happy to have him here if he wants to stay, but not like that.

Henry just meant he'll keep buying the Arsenal kit of course, then have a kick around in his back garden with Iniesta and Messi.

Maybe it'll be for the best, United got rid of Van Nistelrooy and managed to win the league the next year. Just try and get Eto'o.

Yeah I agree. Sucks though. I'm gonna have to get a new home shirt now lol..

like I said, things change in life and you have to move on.

Henry was never going to be at Arsenal forever, no player is, if he feels now is the time, so be it.

It's a shame, because other players stayed and retired, he would have had the quality to do that, and he would have been an absolute Arsenal legend for it - he's still a legend anyway, don't get me wrong.
If he thinks this club isn't ambitious he's wrong. This club is going to win titles with or without him and it would have been nice if he would have been around to win some more with the new team. But such is life, obviously he doesn't agree.

It's a shame, because you never know if he's just leaving because he's a moody bastard (as I suspect) or if he really feels he has to go. If it's the former, you can't have the board and the manager constantly telling him how important he is and that he has to stay. He has to accept that there's other things more important at a football club and that you can't be a little diva all the time.

Please stay, but if you must go, all the best!

I was just wondering, where did the eurosports interview information come from? :-/
I read it on another board. It wasn't an interview as far as I know, he just attended the game and the commentator apparently spoke to him (off air).

I don't even know which language Eurosport it was or if it's true at all.

Is football manager a game? I think I've heard of it but never seen it in action? Like PES or FIFA?

Yeah it's a game, but not like fifa or pes, instead it's a football manager sim with heavy focus on text and statitistics. For example, you run your own team as a manager and buy and sell players and set up the tactics for every match. It's very addicting and I must warn you, you'll will never have an ordinary life after you have played the game :D

yep, it's a game. It's a football management simulation, the best one out there.

Highly addictive and it will eat away your life. Perfect for quiet summers when you're 360 is broken and your girlfriend on holiday in Greece.
