I thought Man Utd were in for him? Anyway, he can play midfield, left back as well as central defence so he'll definitely fill in the Flamini sized hole.

Man Utd has the right to first dibs on sporting players yes. But they spent millions on Anderson/Carrick/Hargreaves.

Wouldn't be wise to buy Miguel Veloso.

Well I heard Pique (Barca), Silvestre (Bordeaux), Giggs (retirement), Scholes (Oldham?) were leaving this summer so maybe Man Utd wanted a player for those positions. He won't be first choice anywhere though.

You don't buy a player like Veloso to play at other positions than DM.

Sure he can fill the holes at other positions, but DM is his thang.

Schole isn't leaving yet, 2 more seasons at least. Giggs 1 more probably, might go after if we win champs league though.

Anyhoo what will our team be tomorrow hmm. Well you can guarantee

Vds
Brown Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Ronaldo Scholes
Rooney

I'm expected carrick, hargreaves and park to start. Tevez to come on in 2nd half, giggs to.

I don't know if I want a Portuguese guy playing DCM for Arsenal in the EPL :lol

bit unfair to disclude ones which made it but then left isnt it?? many utd players who made it and then left were more of a success (at utd) than some of those still at arsenal who have yet to make anything.

just off the top of my head

Man Utd

successes:
Brown
Neville
Giggs
Scholes
Beckham
Butt
Rooney
Ronaldo

squaddies/(or successes considering games played/medals won):
Fletcher
O'Shea

proven hot prospects
Anderson
Nani
Foster (Next season)

future:
Pique
Jonny Evans
Fabio
Rafael
Rodrigo
Wellbeck

wont count people like eagles/richardson/rossi who did ok and played some games but didnt make much of an impact at utd.

How many of your arsenal youngsters can you really call successes and how do they compare to our thoroughbreds?? :lol

Arsenal

Clichy
Senderos
Djourou
Fabregas
Bendtner
Denilson
Song
Traore
Hoyte
Walcott

with 3 or 4 more to follow next season.

not even a contest. you might call various players a success at arsenal but what have they won? given a direct choice man utd is the perfect place for a young player - if he's good enough. and if they arent they're well prepared for a good career elsewhere.

Italy's coach Roberto Donadoni has announced a provisional 24 names team for Euro 2008

Most likely, Montolivo will be dropped when the team is officialized on 28th May

Keepers: Buffon, Amelia, De Sanctis
Defenders: Barzagli, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso, Materazzi, Panucci , Zambrotta
Midfielders: Ambrosini, Gattuso, Aquilani, Camoranesi, De Rossi, Perrotta, Montolivo, Pirlo
Forwards: Toni, Borriello, Del Piero, Di Natale, Quagliarella, Cassano

Cassano is IN!!!!

:D :D

me happy

In the italian Euro squad? Is he really that good!? I have always seen him as somewhat lackluster. Surely you have better strikers than him, with Toni, Del piero, Totti etc.

Totti has retired from internationals, and Cassano has been awesome this season :)

And never caused troubles when playing for the national side :)

lol, this is awesome.

the hosts are trying to get Cesc's parents to say they are more proud of him than they are their other children.

Does he have any younger brothers? We could have the Toure bothers playing with the Fabregas brothers.

I was just reading about this 15 year old French player (Jeremy Helan) who will go to Manyoo instead of Arsenal because they offered him "a better career plan". That got me thinking: how many of the teenagers Manyoo buy actually make it through to the first team compared to Arsenal? And by first team I don't mean on once or twice as a substitute.

Manyoo

Brown
Neville
Giggs
Scholes
Fletcher

4 of the 5 came through in the early ninetees.

Arsenal

Clichy
Senderos
Djourou
Fabregas
Bendtner
Denilson
Song
Traore
Hoyte
Walcott

with 3 or 4 more to follow next season.

yeah, must have been the better "career plan"
Thats not a fair list at all. You've only listed the united players who were at the academy at a really young age. Neville, scholes and giggs wereall at united when they were 14 or younger. I think the same goes for brown and fletcher. Some of those arsenal playes you've listed were not there until they were 16 or so.

Half of those arsenal players you mentioned have hardly done anything for arsenal. Clichy and fabregas are the only two who are really important. Senderos, walcott and Bendtner are squad players at the moment, but they'll become more important later on. Densilson has potential. The rest of them will be out of arsenal or will wither be spending their careers at arsenal on the bench.

If you're going to make a list of all the teenagers that we've signed, then atleast do it properly. You've completely ignored our two best youngers, rooney and ronaldo.

Ah, Mancs and Gooners...always fighting.

Chelsea and Manchester United are each struggling to sell-out their allocation of tickets for the Moscow showpiece, despite the Luzhniki stadium's capacity being reduced to 69,500 from 85,000. (Times)

:lol Frauds...

:lol I wish it was Saturday and I had time to get popcorn and watch this out. If you're going to use that criteria then you'll have to add Viera, Anelka (incidentally, which Man Utd rival hasn't he played for? Should ask the Guardian) and maybe Henry too.

Why isn't Nesta in the Italy squad?

h0pper, stop with the gloating. And a link or something

Blackburn are preparing an £11m raid on Espanyol to sign defender Marc Torrejon and striker Ferran Corominas. (Mirror)

£11m? That'd be our entire budget I'd think. Dunno about the defender though he appears to be a centre back and I'd really prefer a right back, but "Coro", as he appears to be known, has some pretty crappy stats. But so did Santa Cruz so I'm not making that mistake again.

Espanyol have confirmed Hughes has been at their matches and any of their players have a price btw, so could well be true.

This will be Liverpool's team next season:

-------------------Reina----------------
Degen--Carragher--Skrtel--Dossena
--------Masch-----------Barry---------
---------------Gerrard-----------------
---Kuyt------------------------Babel---
----------------Torres------------------

I'm not convinced Skrtel will be ahead of Agger. I prefer the latter. Both seem to be very good defenders, but Agger being left footed is an advantage (it doesn't really matter, but ideally you'd have one right footed and one left footed centre halves) and he offers more going forwards with a pretty fierce strike.

Though by a month or two into the season, Degen will have shown his true colours and Carragher will be playing right back with Skrtel and Agger in the middle anyway.

Barton sent to prison for 6 months. lol.

Hmmm, I hope that doesn't affect other players leaving. Maybe the likes of Duff, N'Zogbia and Milner won't be allowed to go until January now, if they're allowed to go at all of course.

Retired with Totti.

dont think anyone is willing to argue the point tbh.

and you may have noticed I didnt edit the arsenal list so yes, include whoever you think is fair.

but how old were henry and vieira when they joined though? surely only u21s can really be considered young players - cos you could sign them and stick them in the youth teams before they break through - except they're so good they break through right away.

Sounds romantic.

Hah, yes.

Moreno says he'd like to play in England, but no one's offered enough yet. I think Spurs' problem is the Berbatov/Eto'o situation. They don't want to buy Moreno and then find that Eto'o's actually willing to join and they can't afford him anymore. And likewise they don't want to spend too much on him if they can't sell Berbatov for the price they want, not when that money could be better spent elsewhere (keeper, centre back, left winger, defensive midfielder...).

you're including players of the last 15 years in your list.

Might as well include Keown, Adams etc. in mine then. Which kind of makes your "what have they won" point slightly moot.

I was basically talking about real youth players, not bought in at the end of their teens (Rooney, Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani etc.) and that made it through to the first team recently, not 15 years ago. To be fair I should remove Denilson from my list.

But I could even have included players like Adebayor, Van Persie, Toure, Diaby if we take your standards.

Exactly what I was going to say. If Ronaldo/Rooney can be incuded for them then so can Ade, Toure and VP for us. Because those players weren't brought up through our youth system youth team --> 1st team.

Fair enough. If we look at players who did come up through the youth teams, then the two lists look something like this:

United:

Brown
Neville
Giggs
Scholes
Fletcher
Pique
Eagles
Evans

Arsenal:

Clichy
Senderos
Djourou
Fabregas
Bendtner
Denilson
Song
Traore
Hoyte

I removed walcott because he was part of the first-team set up as soon as he joined.

Now the ones in bold are those that have played a big part in the club or will be a big player for the club in the future. United have 5 players, Arsenal have six. The problem is, 3 of those 5 players for United are in their 30's. Most of those arsenal players in bold are still very young.

However, you've got to look at how long each player spent in arsenals youth system. Its a bit unfair to compare cesc to scholes because cesc spent most of his youth at Barca and only spent 1 year playing in arsenals youth system, whilst scholes was with United since he was 14. We were more responsible for scholes' development than arsenal were for cescs. I dont know when each of those arsenal players came to arsenal, but Out of the United players listed, they all joined at 14 or younger, with the exception of fletcher who joined at 16.

How many players will be dropped when we have the final team?

Donadoni should have picked Pippo instead of Cassano:(

Liverpool Daily Transfer Updates #4

-Today Liverpool confirmed the bosman signing of Swiss RB Philipp Degen.
-Guillem Balague has said that Liverpool have already signed two full backs (presumably Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena), the Gareth Barry deal is close and that the signing of a striker to replace Crouch will be all for this summer.
-Liverpool defender Jack Hobbs will be sold, with Pompey and West Ham interested.
-Liverpool academy player Astrit Ajdarevic wants to leave the club. He has been highly regarded in the youth set up with a lot of potential.
-Liverpool will look to land Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Ramé as Reina's understudy.

No, but I hoped he was at least good enough to get into the Italy squad :S

So does that mean we're getting the Italian equivalent of someone like Nicky Shorey for £8 million :S

5th position + the UEFA Cup awaits. I wonder how that feels

There are TONS of defenders that Donadoni could pick that is better than Dossena.

He isn't a bad defender, the problem is that there are so many better.

One thread for the rest of the gaffers and this thread is for us (so that we don't have to read every stupid things these idiots write).

Brown over Sagna? Fuck off. And there have been a number of better wingers than Cole, though he's had a good season.

But I think everyone in this thread will acknowledge Santa Cruz's rightful place over Adebayor.

Each of the three pundits got to nominate a player, in the case of a tie Gabriele picked the winner. He was pretty pissed off that no one picked Essien for right-back, I think it clouded his judgement.

Oh and Mama Mark Hughes is the guest so you might want to listen, although it almost seems to devolve into him acting as if he is in a job interview for a job abroad.

I'm getting fed up of us having to settle for players like Degen when just recently Chelsea have bought Bosingwa for £16 million and even Tottenham are linked with players like Etoo and have bought Modric. The ownership situation is a bloody joke and the club is going to be stuck in neutral because of it whilst everyone else moves forward. Thank god we have a young team with players starting to come through from the youth / reserve team.

On the subject of ownership, I heard a while back that Hicks had a deadline in which he could buy Gillett's share and that deadline was at the end of May. Just wondering if anyone else had heard anything like this?
